The House That Jack Built (2018)

“Some people claim that the atrocities we commit in our fiction are those inner desires which we cannot commit in our controlled civilization, so they're expressed instead through our art.”

The special guest this time around is the super fantastic human being, journalist & podcasting heavy metal hero Brad Hanson.

Melancholia (2011) - Directed by Lars von Trier

Melancholia (2011) - Directed by Lars von Trier

This week Ryan and Ty talk about the middle movie of Lars von Trier's "Depression Trilogy" - Melancholia. There's a lot of interesting stuff to dig into with the film, but does it add up to a masterpiece or meh? Roll It attempts to answer that, or at least contemplate it this week, but what are your thoughts?  Come back in two weeks for a more lighthearted romp - Hoodwinked!  Contact us at rollitpodcast@gmail.com or follow us!

Art versus the artist (The House That Jack Built)

Art versus the artist (The House That Jack Built)

This week's movie is a litmus test for fans of horror. The House That Jack Built is a characteristically bitter piece of visual candy from Lars Von Trier, and oh do the boys have questions. Is interpreting art through the identity of the artist valid criticism or fashionable nonsense? Should viewers care whether artists are virtuous people? Are serial killers interesting? And is it okay to laugh while cringing?

    AntiChrist (2009)

    AntiChrist (2009)

London-based film critic Zoë Rose Smith sits down to discuss controversial filmmaker Lars von Trier's highly controversial film, AntiChrist. The conversation evaluates the aesthetics of the film and performances, the role of misogyny in the film and its reception, the graphic body horror, but most importantly, the lengths we go to in grief to feel something.

Was tun?

When someone makes art it usually evokes different feeling in different individuals and can lead to alternate conclusions about it. When the discussion becomes 'is this even art?' the stakes are upped more. And when you kill people and call it art, you are led through Hell by Virgil himself. This week the Squirms themselves come to some wild conclusions as they watch another super arty horror flick, this time from Lars von Trier. The House That Jack Built is as harrowing as it is deep, but is it art?

That Serial Killer Movie With Matt Dillon - Serial Killer Movie Sweden - Lars von Trier Movies - House That Jack Built Movie

Disclaimer: We discuss a really dark movie from Sweden that you can’t unsee.

Remember that time Matt Dillon played a serial killer in a Lars von Trier movie? And that movie stirred up some controversy with critics and audiences.  Let’s relive the good times, shall we…

    House That Jack Built:

“In five episodes, failed architect and vicious sociopath Jack recounts his elaborately orchestrated murders -- each, as he views them, a towering work of art that defines his life's work as a serial killer in the Pacific Northwest.”
