ICYMI: Layoff Stories Are Trending On TikTok…Here’s What Happened When I Was Laid Off, And What I Learned From It

ICYMI: Layoff Stories Are Trending On TikTok…Here’s What Happened When I Was Laid Off, And What I Learned From It

Welcome to this week’s ICYMI, where we kick off the week with a quick game-changing tip from one of our guests that you might have missed.

Horrible layoff stories are trending on TikTok right now, led by badass Gen-Zs like Brittany Pietsch who worked at @Cloudflare, who are filming and posting their virtual firing meetings.

And I’ve been there. From being shepherded into a room like cattle where dozens of colleagues and I were unceremoniously laid off by HR, to managing my boss’s calendar as their meeting to lay me off was scheduled into it — I know a thing or two about the emotional damage of getting laid off by a company you worked your ass off for.

So we're throwing it back to my layoff experiences that I shared in season 1, and everything I learned from it. The most important thing? You actually can’t blame yourself or allow it to inform your identity and self-worth. It’s a numbers game that has nothing to do with you — maybe you were the most recent hire, or you make $1K more than your teammate. Often, the people who you work closest with, like your manager, aren’t even involved in these decisions.

Getting let go is devastating, but it’s also an opportunity to reevaluate. Use this as a chance to build a solid strategy for your career trajectory. Get intentional about your purpose and your job values, and only apply to opportunities that check those boxes.

LIVE: Self Worth Outside of Work

LIVE: Self Worth Outside of Work

In a world that often measures our worth by our professional achievements, it's crucial to recognize that our value extends far beyond our careers. I gathered with community in Brooklyn, New York for this live podcast panel discussion around our current digital age, productivity, and well-being.

We discussed who we are outside of what we do. How can we ensure that we are holistic individuals who love ourselves and others regardless of our productivity and job titles? What practices can help us grow in other areas outside the workspace, and how can we remain happy and proud of ourselves even in seasons where we are not outwardly "winning"?

This event was a much-needed reminder that NONE OF US ARE ALONE in society, as isolated as we may feel or be. Societal norms around work can make us feel worthless — remember that you are enough simply because you are. Nothing else, just being.

Rich Bruno, 30 years of experience as a supply chain leader, 10 years as an entrepreneur, and 4 years as a professional coach and business consultant.  I retired from Johnson & Johnson roughly 4 years ago, 2 weeks after turning 55 years old.  I did this with complete conviction, to achieve greater balance in my life, spend more time with my family, and live out my entrepreneurial pursuits.

Today, I am living my best life!  I own my calendar, but make no mistake, I made a transition from my corporate career, I didn't "retire".  I am still very active and driven to make a difference in peoples' lives, through the MAX Challenge franchise ownership as well as my work as a coach and consultant.  I am also a continuous learner who prides himself on continuous improvement.

My philosophy is give more than you get, always be grateful, and strive toward having a positive impact in people's lives.
