We All Risk Becoming Obsolete with Julie Noonan

Episode 36. We’re all getting older, technology is replacing jobs, employers want to hire younger people and layoffs are happening everywhere. What does that mean for the rest of us?

In this episode Greg interviews Julie Noonan. Her expertise is all about managing big changes within organizations - she’s helped with dozens of M&A transactions, reorganizations, restructuring, new systems and just about everything else. Big change is hard. On top of all this, she’s been laid off more than once and had to re-invent how she approaches her work.

Today Julie is an executive coach, change strategist, and consultant. In this episode they discuss many of the changes happening out there, the creep of ageism and how to evolve as a professional as you get older and older throughout your career.

Here's my favorite quote to navigate difficult situations
"If you have ever been stopped cold in your tracks by one career hurdle or another you know how much it feels like failure. But the truth is, sometimes hurdles are our best friends because they force us to stop and face the fact that it’s time to change something. And changing something is how we find what’s next" -- Condoleezza Rice

Cultivating Employee-Centric Culture and the Future of the Workforce | Lochhead on Different

Episode 27 | Employee Centric-Culture and the Future of the Workforce

Note: this episode contains explicit language.

    The Big Themes:

    • Layoffs at Salesforce: Salesforce recently cut about 10% of its entire workforce which suggests a big shift in performance culture. Business leaders are now looking for a culture that is employee-centric and produces tangible results.
    • A choice for listeners to make: How do we have a legendary culture that produces massive results and is a great place to work?
    • Women have gained more jobs than men for four months straight: The Wall Street Journal recently reported that women now hold 49.8% of all non-farm-related jobs. A massive amount of "prime-aged men" aged 25-54, are out of work, leading to a massive hole in the economy.

The Big Quote: "What it means is we need to have a conversation. What's the society we want to have? What's the work world we want to have? What's the work culture we want to have? And how do we create true equality of opportunity, and a meritocracy based on, you know, what the people who do well do well, because they produce results, and the people who don't, don't. And we want equality around access to opportunity based on real meritocracy. I think, I think... here's what I know, I think we need to have this discussion."

Teach Me How To Bounce Back From A Layoff with CEO and Career Coach, Latesha Byrd

This week, we’re throwing it back to an episode that feels as relevant today as it was when we released it in 2020: navigating a layoff. With a looming recession, the volatile stock market, and sky-high interest rates, it seems like companies everywhere are laying off employees each time we log into LinkedIn — especially in the tech industry.

Layoffs can happen for a million different reasons, and it’s important to know that company cuts and restructuring has nothing to do with you personally. Still, losing a job impacts your self-esteem, your bank account and your career goals, but our chat with Latesha Byrd is back to help you bounce forward if it happens to you. Latesha is a certified career coach and the CEO of Perfeqta, a talent development consulting agency that helps companies build high-performing teams and put equity back into talent.

Join us as we chat about:

    • Our personal experience with layoffs
    • Three things people should do immediately after they’ve been laid off
    • How to gain confidence again
    • The importance of a “Career Readiness Toolkit”
    • How to talk about your layoff in an interview
    • Key traits top talent have that sets them apart
    • Important questions to ask in an interview
    • How to use LinkedIn to build your own personal brand

We hope this episode helps you feel a little less alone and ready to jump into your next big opportunity!

Beware the Sneaky PIP - How Companies Use Aggressive "Performance Management" to Conceal Layoffs In a Downturn And How to Protect Yourself

In this episode, I break down the trend that we're starting to see in tech - companies using creative "performance management" strategies to cut costs and people in order to avoid labeling them as layoffs and avoid paying severance.  These strategies also help companies shift the blame for a downward trend and buy time with investors, while you're left holding the blame bag.

Tune in to this episode to find out:
    1) How to recognize a "sneaky PIP (Performance Improvement Plan)" is coming,
    2) Why most companies use sneaky PIPs during downturns to conceal layoffs and hiring freezes and buy time with investors,
    3) How to proactively manage your situation in a way that saves you money and time.

Getting support during this time of your career is critical.  If you're interested in joining a confidential support group of female peers in tech who are affected by these trends, please indicate your interest by filling out a 1 minute confidential survey here: https://forms.gle/xvwfQV4SMLnLTQRV9

How Sahil Lavingia created the multi-million dollar company, Gumroad.

How Sahil Lavingia created the multi-million dollar company, Gumroad.

Gumroad has been around 11 years and more, and people have made tens of thousands of dollars selling digital products on Gumroad! But do you know, how Gumroad was founded?

In this episode, the founder and CEO of Gumroad, Sahil Lavingia who also invested in Clubhouse, Republic, and more, joined me to talk about his origin story and his road to creating Gumroad!

Sahil's origin story is fascinating, he was young and wanted to buy some Xbox games, so he started learning how to build websites to make money on the side. He then fell in love with building sites and apps, and eventually landed as the number 2 employee on Pinterest.

Like every great entrepreneur and inventor, Sahil built Gumroad because he had a problem selling his digital goods and services online, he saw the pain that the world need to be solved, so he took it upon himself and started Gumroad in  hope to help others to help their product online! And then, the rest is history!
