What Does It Mean to truly Understand Your Dog? "Talking With The Dogs" with Liz Murdoch; Feedback From Last Ep. Leash Walk Challenge; The Dangers of Pre-setting Training Goals

This ep. is all about reading and understanding our dogs, respecting their needs, and adapting to their personalities and they grow and change.

Liz Murdoch is an animal communicator with a passion for helping people bond and understand their pet on a whole new level. This is a great chat full of surprising tidbits of info.

I follow this with three examples of feedback I received from the challenge from last month's ep. (inserting command based exercises on a leash walk that require your feet to move when the dog does not, and unteaching the Sit command). This leads to some surprising results for two dogs with different kinds of anxiety and one silly dog!

I then use a client example to show the benefits of providing dogs with options. By pre-determining the end goal, we often limit the ability for dogs to overcome fears and prevent ourselves from enjoying the company of our dog.  UPWARD Dogology allows us to provide skills to read the dog, adapt to individual dogs' personalities and progress as the dog progresses.

Meeting and working with fearful or aggressive dogs. The importance of the approach.

Meeting and working with fearful or aggressive dogs. The importance of the approach.

One of the most important approaches of UPWARD Dogology is "Never rush to your end goal". Sound obvious? In this episode I use the example of working with an aggressive dog to show how trainers commonly focus on the dog liking them or using treats to increase comfort, which can cause increased frustration for both the dog and their human.

Why are Negative Reinforcements Still Present? Are Avoidance and Distraction Realistic and Effective?

Why are Negative Reinforcements Still Present? Are Avoidance and Distraction Realistic and Effective?

In the last decade or more there has been huge changes and advancements in the dog world at large and within the behavior/training sector. Thanks to influential organizations such as The Fear Free Movement, the popularity of negative reinforcements has decreased dramatically.  Because Conditioning methods rely on reinforcements, this leaves positive reinforcements to carry the weight. Is this a realistic expectation?

The industries insistence of only including methods which rely on reinforcements has lead to an increase in gadgets and legitimizing "techniques" such as Avoidance and Distraction or simply "Managing Your Dog's Anxiety".  Are these realistic and, when dog owners are not satisfied, is it fair to blame them?

UPWARD Dogology episodes contain a Learning Journey and a SnipPet. The Journey describes the process, challenges and successes with a client and their dog. The SnipPets are tidbits of info, tips, “what’s trending”, opinions and advice from experts on anything and everything dog related.

Learning Journey: In this episode, Billie introduces us to Kelvin and his dog, Zeus. Zeus is nervous of new people coming into the home or on walks if they pay too much attention to him.  And then, due to an incident, afraid to go on neighborhood walks.

The SnipPet Piece is a true or false segment, that touches on  three topics 1) are emaciated dogs, when homed, more likely to be in need of impulse control training than other rescued dogs? 2) Is the honey-moon period a myth? 3) How effective is the gentle leader?

In this Learning Journey, Billie introduces us to Dana and Leslie with their adopted dog, Sasha, who has been returned to the rescue organization twice. Although she "ticks all the boxes" of a great family pet, she has annoying habits.

The SnipPet Piece uses a human example to explain how perception, in conjunction with choices, influences a dog's behavior. Can we change that behaviour? Yes - but we need to change the dog's perception first!

In this Learning Journey, Billie introduces us to John and his dog, Samson. John has had Samson since puppyhood and he is well socialized and a great family pet. But when John tries to rehome him due to his illness, he learns that Samson has an interesting form of food aggression mixed with resource guarding.

This SnipPet Piece uses a common trick style training exercise to explain why it is important to elevate these exercises to more useful exercises.

The Importance of Changing Your Mindset; How the Dog Industry Today Effects You and Your Dog

The Importance of Changing Your Mindset; How the Dog Industry Today Effects You and Your Dog

Welcome to episode 2 of the revamped season 1 (as of Sept, 2021)

In this episode, I  share thought provoking information and stories to "retrain your brain", so you can easily absorb the information on UPWARD Dogology in the following episodes.

Mainstream dog training currently consists of methods adhering to Conventional Methodologies.  These methods are effective and many dogs can go through their entire life with the guidance provided by Conditioning Methods. But for many dogs these methods can fall short after puppyhood.  This is not the fault of the owner or trainer, or, of course, the dog!

This episode talks about how industry experts have effectively (and thankfully) diminished the popularity of negative methods and techniques, yet also recognize the need for a methodology that is non-aversive and effective with dogs over 6 months, and in particular, ones with a checkered or unconventional past. To start this process, it is necessary to open our minds to learning.

Season 1- Part 1 of 4 - Who the hell is Billie Groom?

To avoid that "deer-in-the-headlights-look" as you venture through the mini-series, it is a good idea to hear how Billie's learning journey lead to the creation of UPWARD Dogology. This is not your average learning journey - no certifications, no set game plan, and no rules.

"My learning journey is my own, and I give full credit to the dogs who put their trust in me. My goal was to develop a solution to prevent behavioral surrender, euthanasia and abuse to adolescent and adopted dogs. In a twisted, somewhat backwards, journey, I accomplished that, and so much more."

Tails From Alaska: Canine nose work, shelter dogs, and building a successful reward based dog training business

Tails From Alaska: Canine nose work, shelter dogs, and building a successful reward based dog training business

Metis Riley, CPDT-KA, discusses her personal growth from a dog walker to a reward based dog trainer in Alaska. She talks about the success of partnering with a local vet and a veterinary behaviorist, when to use these resources, and what it has done for her business. Reactivity is her focus, working not only with clients but also with dogs in shelters, helping them to get adopted. Metis created a unique program that uses canine nose work in shelter dogs to help them de-stress and use their natural scent abilities to modify behavior. She talks about nose work and the benefits it offers to all types of dogs as a way to gain self-control, focus, and to release stress. Located in Alaska and being a self-admitted "gear nerd," Metis offers her recommendations for the best outdoor dog gear for your pup. Metis is also the co-founder of STRAW for Dogs, a non-profit based in Alaska that helps dogs living outdoors.
