Episode 158 - Unbreakable Code, Unforgettable Heroes: Navajo Code Talkers and Veterans Day

Episode 158 - Unbreakable Code, Unforgettable Heroes: Navajo Code Talkers and Veterans Day

In this episode Jennie and Dianne honor Veterans Day and celebrate National Native American Heritage Month along with guests Charlie Johnson and Connie Kellwood Pitt. Connie's father, Joe Hosteen Kellwood was one of the renowned Navajo Code Talkers of WWII. Connie has made it her mission to share not only her father's personal story, but the stories of the 420 Ordinary Extraordinary Navajo men who participated in every major Marine operation in the Pacific theater. They translated hundreds of thousands of messages using the Navajo language between 1942 and the end of the conflict in 1945, and not one message was ever decoded by the Japanese. Upon returning home at the end of the war, the men were forbidden to tell of their heroic deeds until the mission was finally declassified by the military in 1968. Connie paints a vivid picture of courage and the strength and determination of true Navajo warriors who fought to protect their fellow Marines, their families and their country. To all of America's veterans, thank you.

The Importance Of Passing Down Legacy Stories With Writer Lisa Hoffman

The Importance Of Passing Down Legacy Stories With Writer Lisa Hoffman

What a fun and meaningful conversation with Lisa Hoffman, one of the four bloggers that make up The Sidetracked Sisters. Lisa, her sister, her mother, and aunt have been getting together once a week for 8 years to meet, write stories on a subject, and share them.  Their collective stories have become something to pass down to their children. All of the stuff - the good, the bad, the ugly. How many of us wish that we had something like that from our grandmothers and mothers.

Writing legacy stories has become an amazing springboard for conversations with each other and with other family members.

In this episode we talk about:

    • Why legacy stories are so important
    • How legacy stories help your longevity
    • The history of storytelling of the matriarch within the family
    • The responsibility of telling all the stories
    • How to get started
    • The importance of community in legacy writing
    • How you benefit yourself from telling your legacy stories
    • How listening to others' legacy stories benefit you

There is no other way to describe 73 year old Eunice Ray other than a go-getting, forward thinking, inspirational, independent, woman on the go - go - go.

    Some things Eunice shares about:

    1. How she started paying attention and learning about her own body in her mid 50s.
    2. What that work starting at that age has been able to give her in her 70s.
    3. What is a successful endgame?
    4. How to fulfill a legacy.

Episode 76 - Caroline Emmerton and The House of the Seven Gables in Salem, Massachusetts

Jennie and Dianne are joined by David Moffat, a Visitor Services Specialist & researcher at The House of the Seven Gables. David has done a lot of research into the life and work of Caroline Emmerton, the woman who saved the House of the Seven Gables by turning it into the museum we know today and using the funds from that museum to create a settlement house for thousands of immigrants who came to America in search of a new home.  Emmerton’s legacy can be traced all across the city of Salem. Her grave is in Harmony Grove Cemetery. Her birth house still stands on Summer Street and her home as an adult can still be seen today on Essex Street. The mark of her generous spirit can be found at the Women’s Friend Society on Hawthorne Boulevard and at the Plummer Home for Boys on Winter Island. 09.5: MAVERICK - Tim Reid (Part II) - History Maker and System Builder

09.5: MAVERICK - Tim Reid (Part II) - History Maker and System Builder

This Black History Month and on Super Bowl LVII, we celebrate a champion and pioneer in the truest sense of the words.

Since 1974, Tim Reid has both starred and guest starred as a venerable who's who of the small screen. From The Richard Pryor Show to WKRP in Cincinnati to Simon and Simon and Snoops or That 70s Show, he has acted, produced, directed, and created himself into a cult classic iconoclast over several of the golden ages of television.

Every icon has a creative expression or project which demonstrates their virtuosity as well as core essence as an actor. For Tim Reid that show was the Emmy-nominated Frank's Place on CBS. New Millennium Studios was a direct outgrowth of Frank’s Place being cancelled by short-sighted studios, where he became 2nd to Oscar Micheaux to have a Black-owned full service movie studio. Outside of his own, dozens of films shot there, including Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln”.

As we learn in this episode, anger and depression catalyzed a studio that a young Tyler Perry visited prior to his own epic and historic achievement. We talk about that and the reality of making it in, and outside of Hollywood.

Life Bye Legacy with Jimmy Mullen

Life Bye Legacy with Jimmy Mullen

Alrighty folks, welcome back to Season 2, Episode 1 on Transacting Value Podcast!

It’s a new year, and Jimmy joins Porter for a discussion about ambition, perseverance, and reflection – traits we will all need to follow through on those New Year’s resolutions…or any goal, for that matter.

The “bye” in the title of this episode, “Life Bye Legacy,” is intentional. It’s a farewell to what came before and an understanding of what happened in the past. It’s about being grateful for what brought you here but being ready to forge your own path.

Jimmy tells us about his father, a plumber, who was frugal, independent, and proud of his trade. And though he wanted something similar for Jimmy, Jimmy wanted something else for himself.

If you’re in a similar situation of choosing your direction in life:

    • Identify what you’re interested in, what you’re good at.
    • Identify what you want to accomplish.
    • Start with the end in mind and then plan backward. Connect the dots as you move forward.
    • Talk to someone about your plans once you identify them.

Jimmy found his passion in banking – specifically decentralized banking – cryptocurrencies. In addition to talking about Ireland’s economy, he gives us a primer on blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and when to take risks.

    Quotes from today’s episode:

“It didn’t matter what job I had if I didn’t know how to manage my finances.”

“Begin with the end in mind.”

“I had to find my own way. Talking about understanding new frontiers and taking calculated risks, understanding that it’s going to take work.”

“Understand the risks before you make the decisions.”

On blockchain – “This digital reliance of transaction value was inevitable.”

Epigenetic Research and it's Role in Healing

Epigenetic Research and it's Role in Healing

We are so excited about this interview with neuroscientist, philosopher and author, Ben Callif about the role of epigenetic research in personal, generational, collective and systemic healing.

Ben is the Research and Mindset Director at Bader Philanthropies in Milwaukee WI and the author of "Organumics: An Epigenetic Reframing of Consciousness, Life and Evolution."

Ben is passionate about the topic of epigenetics and it's role in making the world a better place through intentionality and consciousness raising.

In this podcast we will discuss:

    • What IS Epigenetics? (Defined)
    • Why is it important to understand how our genetics can be changed and modified, and how is this possible?
    • The role of epigenetics in understanding issues of physical health, emotional wellbeing and spirituality (they are intertwined)
    • What is meant by the "sphere of influence" in the way we interact with the world?
    • Intergenerational patterns--how they are helpful? How are they harmful? What can be done to change them?
    • Societal trauma and the importance of understanding how intentionality can change entire communities through consciousness raising and community building.
    • Mental health, as seen through the lens of epigenetics, and the real possibility of healing through compassionate community

    Business Law

    Business Law

Listen to me talk about my humble beginning as a teenage entrepreneur. Then, learn about some important factors to consider for deciding which business entity to organize for running your business. Responsible business owners address risk management and protection from unintended liability. Does the Christian Gospel say something about business? A verse in the Bible in the book of Luke, chapter 5, verse 4 through 7 states that Jesus was with Simon/Peter and other fishermen. Simon/Peter called out to his partners (presumably his fishing business partners) to come help lift the nets of fish out of the water. If you can find additional Christian Bible verses, please email them to me at host@talklawradio.com. Finally, how is it that I could not receive my granddad’s legacy?
