Detaching with Love: A Path Towards Healthier Family Relationships

Detaching with Love: A Path Towards Healthier Family Relationships

Rich and I recently went to see our boys in California for a Music Festival/Onewheel event.  I knew that we were walking into a big party event and this included our kids.  I am grateful for my Soul Recovery and the practice of detaching with love as it has allowed me to be in these kinds of situations and enjoy our family just as it is and let go of expectations.  I was able to be comfortable in my sobriety, stay in my lane and let everyone else stay in their lane.  I am grateful to continue to be on this path toward heathier family relationships.

Letting Go of Control: Blessing Others, and Embracing Spiritual Growth in Soul Recovery

Letting Go of Control: Blessing Others, and Embracing Spiritual Growth in Soul Recovery

What if you could let go of control and deepen your spiritual practice? In this transformative conversation, we explore a foundational concept of Soul Recovery and how blessing others from a place of love can guide us on this journey. Inspired by Mel Robbins' theory of "just let them," we discuss how to release our desire for control and embrace the healing power of blessings, drawing from the wisdom of Pierre Pratervand's book, "The Gentle Art of Blessing."

In this episode, we dive into the Art of Blessing and how it can be a powerful tool for healing and growth. By shifting our attitudes and learning to bless unconditionally, we can profoundly change our lives and the lives of those around us. So, come along with us on this Soul Recovery journey, and let's support each other in becoming our best selves.

Letting go of Blame and Replacing it with Awareness, Compassion and Healing

Letting go of Blame and Replacing it with Awareness, Compassion and Healing

It's natural for us to seek external sources to assign blame when we find ourselves in a state of unhappiness. We often wonder who or what is responsible for the discomfort we feel. However, this tendency can create a divide between us and the people who are important to us, making it challenging to repair the relationships we cherish.

In this episode, we will explore the profound benefits of letting go of blame and embracing the healing power of compassion.  In Soul Recovery we will learn how to bridge the gaps that may have formed in our relationships, creating opportunities for growth, understanding, and forgiveness.

Forgiveness - I am Not What Happened to me, I am who I Choose to Become

Forgiveness - I am Not What Happened to me, I am who I Choose to Become

"I am not what happened to me, I am who I choose to become." -Carl Jung
I recently pulled an Oracle card from my 'Soul Truth Self Awareness' deck and it's title was - Who am I Ready to Forgive? This card offered the reminder that we need to forgive ourselves and others to let go of what happened to us, and become who we choose to be.  It asks 'Who do you want to become and how is this resistance holding you from what your soul wants?'

    Choosing Yourself: Overcoming Codependency

    Choosing Yourself: Overcoming Codependency

We can think that we are being selfish when we choose our own healing and Soul Recovery as we watch those around us struggle. However, just like the training given to lifeguards-  there is a time when you have to choose to save yourself and not drown with the one you are trying to save who is resisting. You need to choose yourself to overcome codependency.  In Soul Recovery we are learning that to heal the world around us, we need to start with our own healing.

Al-Anon Hope for Today and the Slogans 'How Important is it?' 'This Too Shall Pass'

Al-Anon Hope for Today and the Slogans 'How Important is it?' 'This Too Shall Pass'

In this episode, I am reading from Al-Anon's Hope for Today (February 17) and contemplating its message from a Soul Recovery standpoint. The reading encompasses two of my beloved Slogans, namely "How Important is it?" and "This Too Shall Pass." These powerful slogans serve as rapid reminders for us to realign with our spiritual core and avoid becoming entangled in the whirlwind of our distress.

Grace and Self-Compassion: The Path to Healing is not a Straight Line

Grace and Self-Compassion: The Path to Healing is not a Straight Line

On this episode of Recover Your Soul, we discuss the slippery slope of falling back into old behaviors, thought patterns, and beliefs when we come to a curve in our Soul Recovery. Rev Rachel reflects on the importance of self-compassion and loving kindness  on the Soul Recovery journey. We explore warning signs that often go unnoticed on this path and discuss the importance of giving ourselves grace and self-compassion during difficult times.  Rev Rachel's shares her personal struggles with communication and asking for help, and how these relate to childhood experiences, and old belief systems.  The twits and turns are part of the healing, part of integrating our human and spiritual selves and part of our journey.

Regret: How to Process and Let it Go in Soul Recovery

Regret: How to Process and Let it Go in Soul Recovery

We all have regret. This episode is about how we can process and let go of regret in Soul Recovery.  Letting go of regret is an important step in living a happy and healthy life. We all make mistakes and bad decisions, but it's important to learn from them and move forward. It's also important to trust that we are being guided by something greater than ourselves and to make choices that align with our highest good. We should strive to live from our best selves every day and not let fear hold us back from making the choices that will bring us closer to our fullest potential. It's never too late to start making positive changes in our lives and to choose to live from a place of strength and power.

Alex and Bodhi - Addiction, Awareness and Acceptance

Alex and Bodhi - Addiction, Awareness and Acceptance

Over Christmas, I had the opportunity to sit down with my adult sons, Alex (26) and Bodhi (24), while they were visiting Colorado. Together, we recorded a heartfelt episode where we openly and vulnerably discussed our family's journey towards healing. They boys shared their current experience with drinking and smoking pot, and we  explored how we can support each other on our unique paths towards Soul Recovery. Although originally released as a Bonus episode for Patreon Members and Podcast Subscribers in January, I believe that our conversation can offer valuable insights to the wider RYS community, especially those who have family members at different stages of recovery, or perhaps not on a recovery journey at all.

Stop Talking About What's Not Working

Stop Talking About What's Not Working

When we encounter challenges or difficulties, it's common to dwell on them and talk about them with others, often allowing them to consume our thoughts. However, in Soul Recovery, we're taught that relying on others to make us happy means giving up our own control and power. Our thoughts have great influence, attracting both positive and negative experiences. To shift our focus towards what we truly desire in our lives and relationships, we can utilize the tools and principles of Soul Recovery to become more mindful of our mindset and choose to spend more time thinking about what's working well and what we want to manifest.

    Intention over Expectation

    Intention over Expectation

By focusing on our intentions in Soul Recovery, we can release ourselves from the burden of unrealistic expectations we often place on ourselves and others, which can lead to disappointment and upset. Often, we may not even realize that our expectations and attachment to specific outcomes hinder our relationships and life experiences. Replacing Addiction with Wholeness

    Replacing Addiction with Wholeness

Being a human being can be a challenging experience. From a young age, we are conditioned to believe that we are unable to handle difficult emotions and situations, and that we should seek ways to escape or avoid discomfort. We are also taught that we are lacking in some way or unlovable, which can lead to negative self-talk and self-destructive behavior.

As a result of these early teachings, it's no surprise that many of us turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms and addictions to fill the void in our hearts. However, in the journey of Soul Recovery, we are encouraged to challenge these limiting beliefs and rediscover our innate wholeness. Through deep healing and self-exploration, we can break free from destructive patterns and behaviors, and cultivate a more fulfilling and authentic life.

Sometimes, we may find our lives overwhelming because we give others the power to control our emotions, and sometimes we may even struggle to identify our own feelings. However, our feelings offer insights into what we need to prioritize, such as nurturing what's causing us pain or pursuing activities that bring us joy. By reclaiming our power and refusing to allow others to dictate our emotions, we can start caring about how we feel and move towards a happy and healthy life…embracing Soul Recovery.
In this episode I mention the feelings and emotions from Atlas of the Heart from Berne Brown and also mention that I listen to/watch Abraham Hicks and the Law of Attraction.  Check out the links for more on both.

Al-Anon- Illusion we can Change Others and Admitting we are Powerless

Al-Anon- Illusion we can Change Others and Admitting we are Powerless

I was inspired by a question from Al-Anon's  workbook 'Reaching for Personal Freedom' in the chapter for Step One that read "What keeps me holding onto the illusion that I have the power to change someone else?"
Seeing that it is only an illusion that we can change others is a crucial step in achieving personal freedom and growth. It is natural to want to help those we care about and to try to change their behaviors or situations that we see as harmful or negative. However, the truth is that we cannot control others, and trying to do so can lead to frustration, disappointment, and even resentment.
By recognizing our powerlessness over others, we can focus our energy on changing ourselves and our reactions to the people and circumstances in our lives. This shift in focus allows us to take responsibility for our own well-being and to develop the tools we need to navigate challenging situations and relationships in a healthier way.
It takes courage and humility to acknowledge our powerlessness, but doing so is a critical step in our personal and spiritual growth. When we let go of the illusion of control and accept what we cannot change, we create space for growth, healing, and transformation in our own lives.... Soul Recovery.

Do I need to Change my Life to Heal Now?

Support the Recover Your Soul Podcast and community with a donation ranging from $3 to $10 each month. Thank you for your support!

You know it is time for Soul Recovery but you may ask if you need to leave your relationship, job.... (insert the blank here) so that I can finally heal.  It is easy to think that if we just got away from what was complex in our lives it would be all better and we could finally heal. However, that doesn't always need to be the case, and sometimes it may benefit us to stay in uncomfortable (not unsafe) situations and do our inner work.  By doing our Soul Recovery and allowing for growth and healing before making big changes we are better able to have clarity about what changes do need to be made allowing us to not be running from our problems- but learning and growing from them and then making choices that are from our strength and not from our pain.   Together we can do the work that will recover your soul.

Choosing the Path of Love or the Path of Fear

Support the Recover Your Soul Podcast and community with a monthly donation ranging from $3 to $10 each month. Thank you for your support!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For this episode, I want to talk about the two paths that are available to us to walk in our life at any moment, we may think that we can stand still, but really we know there is no standing still, there is always movement, one direction or the other direction. One Direction is love, and the other direction is fear. Once we recognize this truth we can take responsibility for our happiness and our Soul Recovery journey... and choose love.

This extra episode is from the end of Season 3 from the Friday Bonus episodes for Apple Podcast subscribers and Patreon Members.  In this episode I will be reading from 'How Al-Anon works for Families & Friends of Alcoholics' I am reading from chapter 6 - The Family Disease of Alcoholism and the section 'The Part we Play'  and reflecting on my own life and how this can be used for your Soul Recovery.

Statistics show that almost half of the population are negatively affected by the drug and alcohol addiction of a family member or friend- I think that number is much higher if we broaden to all addictions, abuse, neglect and dysfunction.  Being human is not easy, however if we choose to turn the attention to ourselves and our own Soul Recovery journey we can find peace- even in the midst of chaos and dysfunction.  As I read from this chapter, we can see how we have been caught up in the chaos of someone else and how we have the opportunity to see the part we play in the chaos. Once we recognize our part, we can make different choices and begin to respond in new an healthier ways to the people and circumstances in our lives.
