When Shannan Gilbert disappeared near Ocean Parkway on Long Island, New York,  May 1st 2010 after a 23 minute 911 call, no one could’ve ever imagined what it would spark. While training a cadaver dog, and looking for Shannan near Ocean Parkway, a body is discovered wrapped in burlap type material. When police looked closer, there were actually four dead bodies—all escorts. Over the next several months, they would uncover more bodies, and body parts all in the same dense brush in less than a two-mile stretch of road. It would take years and a team from FBI, state and local police to crack some of these murders using high-end technology, and…pizza crusts. Ever since she was a little girl, Maureen L. Brainard-Barnes had a generous heart. From stray kittens to down-on-their-luck friends, Maureen was happy to share her money, living space, and more with those in need—often leaving herself with little. Born and raised in the southeast corner of Connecticut, Maureen ended her academic career at age 16 when she realized she was pregnant with her first child. With no high school diploma, Maureen set her sights on becoming a model. In 2004, Maureen posted her photos on a supposed “modeling” website and, inadvertently, began her journey into sex work. By July of 2007, Maureen only did sex work part-time to make ends meet when her notorious generosity created financial hardship. In this episode, Jac and Alexis break down how the threat of eviction forced Maureen back into sex work and left her vulnerable to the still-at-large Long Island Serial Killer.

Life wasn’t always simple for 22-year-old Megan Waterman. She was a single mother, in a relationship with a questionable man, and struggling to make ends meet financially. Luckily, Megan was known for making the best out of complicated situations. Throughout her entire life, Megan was a fiercely independent leader who supported those she cared about. From the moment she was born on June 24th, 1985, Melissa Mary Barthelemy was loved. Between her mother, father, and siblings, Melissa was raised alongside people who truly cared about her. As a child, Melissa was recognized for her cleverness and charming smile. As a young woman, Melissa was respected for her independence and determination. After graduating high school in the early 2000s, Melissa went to cosmetology school and moved to New York City to become a hairstylist. That is until, one day, Melissa met a man who promised her quick, reliable money through sex work. As a result, on July 12th, 2009, Melissa left her Bronx apartment to meet a Long Island john. On December 9th, 2015, the former Suffolk County Chief of Police James Burke is arrested for assaulting Chris Loeb three years earlier. Back in December 2012, Chris stole several items from Burke’s police vehicle, including a black duffel bag with an alleged homemade snuff film inside of it. Concerned that Chris would reveal the contents of his duffel bag, Burke struck Chris repeatedly and threatened to kill him. In November 2016, Burke is sentenced to 46 months in prison for his crimes. But, during the investigation of Burke, more of his corruption was revealed. From January 2012 to October 2015, Burke single-handedly slowed the progress of the Long Island Serial Killer case. He shut out the FBI, forced out detectives on the case, and stopped the searches for more victims. In episode 250, Jac and Alexis delve into how Burke could be responsible for allowing the Long Island Serial Killer to get away with multiple murders.

Valerie Lyn Mack was a loving sister, a caring mother, and a dynamic woman During her childhood, Valerie trekked from foster home to foster home for almost a decade. But, when she was nine years old, Valerie was adopted by two loving parents: Edwin and JoAnn Mack. Valerie thrived with the Macks. Her grades improved, she participated in theater, and she showed real leadership potential. But, throughout Valerie’s teen and adult years, she would struggle financially, battle drug abuse, and become entrenched in sex work. By the fall of 2000, 24-year-old Valerie stopped communicating with her family. Deeply concerned, the Macks attempted to file a missing person report for Valerie, but the New Jersey police refused. In this episode, Jac and Alexis will shed light on Valerie’s life and death, as well as the progress her case has seen over the past two decades.

On May 1st of 2010, 23-year-old Shannan Gilbert gets into a black SUV with her hired driver and de facto security guard, Michael Pak. Shannan and Michael travel from New York City’s Manhattan to a wealthy gated community on Long Island known as Oak Beach. Shannan, a sex worker, enters the home of her client, Joseph Brewer. Three hours later, Shannan runs screaming from Brewer’s home. She calls 911 and, although she is sometimes incoherent, clearly conveys that someone is trying to kill her. By the time the Suffolk County police arrive on the scene an hour and a half later, Shannan has vanished into thin air. In episode 249, Jac and Alexis demystify how the search for Shannan became the unexpected catalyst that revealed the existence of the Long Island Serial Killer, nine murdered sex workers and a child, and the corruption within the Suffolk County Police Department.

Shannan Gilbert was an aspiring actress, singer, and writer. After overcoming her tumultuous childhood, Shannan moved to New York City for her big break. In order to make ends meet while she began her career in entertainment, Shannan turned to sex work. On May 1st of 2010, 23-year-old Shannan Maria Gilbert went missing after visiting a sex work client in a gated community called Oak Beach which is located on Long Island. The ensuing investigation for Shannan would reveal ten sets of human remains and expose the Long Island Serial Killer. Although Shannan’s case is technically resolved, the Long Island Serial Killer has yet to be caught. In this episode, Jac and Alexis delve into the dynamic life of Shannan Gilbert, the mysteries surrounding the night she vanished, and the suspicions many have over Shannan’s supposed death by “misadventure.”

A week prior, Megan and her boyfriend, Akeem Cruz, traveled from Maine to New York for business purposes. Megan was a sex worker and Akeem was her pimp. Every few months, the couple would go to New York so Megan could meet with clients for sex work. Once they had made a suitable profit, Megan and Akeem returned home to Maine. But this time, Megan couldn’t go home. On December 13th of 2010, seven months after her disappearance, Megan’s skeletal remains are discovered on Long Island’s Gilgo Beach. Also found near Megan’s remains are the remains of three other victims. All four victims are female sex workers in their twenties. In episode 248, Jac and Alexis unravel how the Long Island Serial Killer, who is suspected to have killed as many as ten sex workers, has continued to evade capture for over twenty years.
