Episode 432: Lovemakers and Bombmakers: A Black Friday Special

Just in time to bulk up your holiday shopping lists there are some choice selections being released this week on Blu-ray from the classic to the pure nostalgic. Peter Sobczynski and Erik Childress guide you through it. Criterion has got some Scorsese and Chabrol while Kino goes Burt Reynolds and a bizarro ‘80s Christmas tale. Speaking of Scorsese, there’s another Lily Gladstone performance to check out from this year and Lions Gate releases two of their franchise players from the theaters as well. Erik and Peter go through the history of the Police Academy series while the same studio releases a complete set of a terrific sci-fi series Erik caught up with this year. For the moms (and lovers of all things love) there’s a classic Christmas romcom debuting in 4K and for the Dads (when they are done with Burt) Harrison Ford gets the 4K treatment on the run and Christopher Nolan’s latest is here for your stocking stuffers.

    0:00 - Intro

1:40 - Criterion (Mean Streets (4K), La Ceremonie)

14:33 - Music Box (The Unknown Country)

20:32 - Kino (Babes in Toyland (1986), White Lightning, Gator, More 4K Recommendations)

Ep 72 - Love Actually - Sprecher Root Beer

So, actually, we actually discuss what is actually one of our very favorite films, not actually just as a Christmas film, but actually just a great film altogether. Actually, we don't actually say actually anywhere near as much during the actual episode as we actually do in this episode summary, so there's no need to actually worry about that.

    Actually.

    Today's root beer is Sprecher.

Spiritual Sequels to Space Jam and Scarface, Master and Commander, Love Actually - Thirty Twenty Ten: Nov 10-16

Another modern Chrismas Classic, Captain Russell Crowe becomes a beloved underdog, a Looney Tunes move done right, Pacino is Lation again, a great week for infamous game music, and the biggest week ever for debuts on The New Mickey Mouse Club. All that and more this week on Thirty Twenty Ten!

Episode 20: He’s Just Not That Into You (2019)

Episode 20: He’s Just Not That Into You (2019)

There are not many films that attempt to deal with a collection of individual women’s stories and Morgan presents this as Exhibit A. Erik has his counterarguments but Morgan makes her case for a film pushing back on the societal norms thrust upon women from an early age from the damage of playground myths to the pressure of getting married. The cliches of romcom’s past are revisited by the hosts and how they are reflected with or without commentary by the film itself. As each relationship is examined, Morgan and Erik look at whether Ginnifer Goodwin and Justin Long’s friendship is “the exception” and who amongst the cavalcade of characters relate most closely to each other’s own personal beliefs and experiences.

Love Actually (2003). Nine intertwined stories examine the complexities of the one emotion that connects us all: love. Among the characters explored are David (Hugh Grant), the handsome newly elected British prime minister who falls for a young junior staffer (Martine McCutcheon), Sarah (Laura Linney), a graphic designer whose devotion to her mentally ill brother complicates her love life, and Harry (Alan Rickman), a married man tempted by his attractive new secretary.
