Love Actually (2003) Christmas "Re Release"

In the spirit of Christmas we thought we would re release our Xmas episode from 2022 - Love Actually. The whole team where on board for this one and it could have been the episode that sealed the deal for Damo. Merry Xmas from the team at Born to Watch, we hope you have a great New Year

"Love Actually," directed by Richard Curtis, is a romantic comedy that has become a staple in the genre, especially during the holiday season. Released in 2003, the film weaves together a tapestry of stories that explore the various facets of love. Set in London, the movie boasts an ensemble cast featuring names like Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley, and many others. Its narrative structure, which interlinks multiple storylines, has been both praised and criticized, making it a film that invites diverse opinions.

The movie opens with a monologue by Hugh Grant's character, who observes that love is all around, even in the most unexpected places. This sets the tone for the film, which delves into different types of love: romantic, platonic, unrequited, and familial. Each story thread explores these themes with varying degrees of success.

One of the most heartwarming stories involves the new Prime Minister, played charmingly by Hugh Grant, who falls for a member of his household staff. This storyline shines due to Grant's effortless charisma and the sweet, albeit somewhat clichéd, narrative. Another compelling narrative is that of a writer (Colin Firth) who, after being cheated on, finds love in a foreign country with someone who doesn't speak his language. This story charmingly illustrates how love can transcend barriers.

However, not all stories hit the mark. The plot involving Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson's characters, dealing with infidelity, is more somber and adds a necessary depth to the film. Thompson's performance, in particular, is a standout, capturing the heartache and complexity of her character with subtlety and grace. On the other hand, the story of a young boy who learns to play the drums to impress his crush feels somewhat out of place, albeit it adds a cute and lighthearted element to the film.

A notable aspect of "Love Actually" is its ability to blend humor with heartfelt moments. The film's comedic timing is impeccable, with several laugh-out-loud moments that balance the more serious undertones. The script is witty, and the actors deliver their lines with a natural ease that makes the dialogue feel authentic.

The film's use of music is another strength. The soundtrack complements the narrative beautifully, enhancing both the emotional and humorous scenes. The iconic scene where Hugh Grant's character dances through 10 Downing Street to the tune of "Jump" by The Pointer Sisters is both hilarious and endearing.

Visually, "Love Actually" captures the essence of London during Christmas time. The cinematography showcases the city's beauty, with scenes set against iconic landmarks and picturesque streets. The Christmas setting adds a magical quality to the film, making it a popular choice during the holiday season.

Despite its strengths, "Love Actually" has faced criticism for some of its storylines and character portrayals. Certain plots seem underdeveloped, and a few characters come across as one-dimensional. Additionally, the film has been critiqued for its lack of diversity, both in terms of its cast and the types of love stories portrayed.

In terms of performances, the ensemble cast delivers uniformly strong performances. Hugh Grant's charming and slightly awkward Prime Minister is both funny and endearing. Emma Thompson's portrayal of a wife grappling with her husband's potential infidelity is deeply moving. Alan Rickman, as always, brings a nuanced depth to his role. The younger members of the cast, like Keira Knightley and Thomas Brodie-Sangster, also add a fresh energy to the film.

"Love Actually" has had a significant cultural impact since its release. Its format of interweaving stories has influenced many other films in the romantic comedy genre. Additionally, its mix of humor, romance, and drama set a new standard for ensemble romantic comedies.

In conclusion, "Love Actually" is a film that encapsulates the complexities and joys of love in its many forms. While it has its flaws, the film's charm, wit, and heart make it a beloved classic. Its portrayal of love as messy, beautiful, and ultimately hopeful resonates with audiences, making it a film that continues to be cherished, especially during the holiday season. The performances, soundtrack, and visual appeal add to its enduring popularity, making it a movie that stands the test of time in the romantic comedy genre.

    Last Christmas

    Last Christmas

We're wrapping up our holiday-themed movies this year with Last Christmas, starring Emilia Clarke, Emma Thompson, Michelle Yeoh and Henry Golding.

Things aren't going well for Kate. She's always wanted to be a singer, but she feels stuck as a career elf at a year-round Christmas shop in London. She's turned into a bit of garbage person over the last year, and it's negatively impacting all of her relationships. Can a chance meeting with a handsome birdwatcher help her turn her life around before it's too late? As its title suggests, expect lots of Wham! and George Michael music.

So, actually, we actually discuss what is actually one of our very favorite films, not actually just as a Christmas film, but actually just a great film altogether. Actually, we don't actually say actually anywhere near as much during the actual episode as we actually do in this episode summary, so there's no need to actually worry about that.

    Actually.

    Today's root beer is Sprecher.

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande

There's nothing like a little light-hearted solicitation to relive your lost youth and discover how amazing sex could be since your, now deceased, boring husband "missionary Martin" never gave it propa'. So, in walks gigolo Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack) to guide Nancy (Emma Thompson) in her search for the ever-elusive big "O".

Just chuck some fit bloke some cash and it'll solve all your problems basically. Some procrastination here, some procrastination there, and that's what Emma Thompson as Nancy does in the sex comedy drama ("sexadramady"?) penned by Katy Brand and directed by Sophie Hyde.

It's a weird one. At the heart of the film is a sex-positive message that has some genuinely touching moments from the inimitable Ms. Thompson. But when you come down to it, it misses the mark in giving Mr. McCormack enough meat to play with. You'll get what we mean when you give it a listen.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU, LEO GRANDE is currently streaming on HULU in the US.

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande: do you empathize?

This one's coming to you by popular request! The #1 comment from women who've watched this movie is that it's too close for comfort, so that makes it a perfect choice for a study of empathy. What is it about Emma Thompson's character that resonated with so many viewers? What does she stand to lose? As an added bonus, this episode even a cameo by Meryl Streep...sorta.

    Camilla, Queen of Wellness

    Camilla, Queen of Wellness
Central to Queen Camilla’s public image is the idea that she’s an unfussy, no-nonsense, ruddy British everywoman. But those with a nose for useless royal miscellany (ahem, your dedicated hosts) have picked up on Camilla’s frequent under-the-radar visits to an idyllic holistic health spa in southern India run by the charismatic healer to the (British) stars, Dr. Issac Mathai. The Soukya International Holistic Health Centre is frequented by the likes of Emma Thompson, Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson, and yes, Queen Camilla, who we can't say for certain DOESN'T get the "reverse childbirth" colonic irrigation. When she’s not in India, Dr. Mathai is flying to the UK to treat Camilla and Charles at home (something Mathai claims to do frequently). So who is this shadowy healer? Well, for one thing, he’s not shadowy at all. He’s surprisingly loose-lipped about his royal connections, for which we are eternally thankful.

Straight from the TIFF Red Carpet Premiere, Actress Lily James & Cast of the Film What’s Love Got to Do With It?

Carrying on with all things LOVE in our Month of LOVE series, this week’s episode features the British romantic comedy-drama Film -  What’s Love Got to Do With It? The film covers the topics of arranged or assisted marriage and interfaith marriage.

Winner of Best Comedy at the 2022 Rome Film Fest and scheduled to soon hit movie theatres in Great Britain (Feb.24th) and North America, the film directed by multi-award-winner, Shekhar Kapur(Elizabeth, Bandit Queen), and written & produced by Jemima Goldsmith Khan, the movie is set between London and Lahore

It documents a filmmaker’s childhood friend & neighbour's arranged marriage to a bride from Pakistan. It is based on Jemima’s own mixed marriage (she was formerly married to Pakistani politician and former cricket captain, Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi, who later served as the 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan). The star-studded cast includes Lily James (Lady Rose in Downton Abbey, Pam in Pam & Tommy) alongside British & Pakistani Actors, Models, Comedians and Musicians Shazad Latif, Shabana Azmi, Emma Thompson, Sajal Aly, Oliver Chris, Asim Chaudhry, Jeff Mirza, Alice Orr-Ewing, and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.

I caught up with some of them at the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10th, 2022, to discuss the concept of arranged & assisted marriages, the pluses & minuses of them, what attracted these stars to their roles, and lots more!

    Love Actually

    Love Actually

In this episode we discuss dreams of being a Nepo Baby, Maddy's family trip to the mall, "hilarious" car decals, not getting hit on, the opening 9/11 reference, being a Hugh Gurl, the horrendous fat shaming of Natalie and more, Colin Firth being typecast as the "Hot Cuck", the mindblowing age gap between Keira Knightley and Sam, Mia the receptionist aka the biggest villain in history, how much Liv hated the porn scenes, the horror of Aurelia's sitch, slow dancing with your boss, the creepy (cough cough incestuous) nature of Laura Linney's relationship with her brother, being a "pellow" kid, being jealous of Joanna and SO MUCH MORE!!!

YNFA 037: Love Actually, or Do They Know It’s Curtis?

Lock up your daughters (especially if Colin Firth is moping around with some loose papers), and keep an eye on that randy PM, as we immerse ourselves in the Christmas overindulgence that is Richard Curtis’s Love Actually. Can we please stop calling totally normally proportioned Martine McCutcheon chubby? Did Mark, aka the Cue Card Guy, deserve the hate he got for his visual proclamation? And are the porn couple the only healthy relationship in this whole film? Or is it Bill Nighy’s aging rockstar and his manager? We’re too busy tearing up over the actual people welcoming each other home at Heathrow to come up with any answers.
