'Self awareness and your values will always guide you to where you need to be' — Madelyne Paulk | Marketing and Communications Manager, Jet It

Our guest this week is Madelyne Paulk, the Marketing and Communications Manager at Jet It. I recently met Madelyne at an aviation conference, and I was drawn to how genuine, professional, and personable she is. Moments after speaking with her, I immediately knew she would be a great guest to feature on this podcast, and her perspective on diversity and inclusion would be valuable to the audience. Madelyne had some reservations initially because she was new to aviation, which was precisely why her story was important to share with you.

Madelyne started her career in aviation with Jet It in 2020 after completing her master's degree program. With little knowledge of the industry, she took a chance and started as a Marketing Intern. Since then, Madelyne has worked her way up to Marketing Manager, where she is able to lead and guide marketing efforts to build brand awareness. Passionate about service and DE&I, Madelyne volunteers with the RedTail Flight Academy helping them plan their inaugural graduation ceremony and consulting on their marketing efforts. Outside of aviation, she also sits on the Lowcountry Advisory Board for Multiplying Good, a national nonprofit focused on elevating public service and empowering the next generation of servant leaders.

Creators of 'Gullah Gullah Island' on telling, preserving SC stories

Creators of 'Gullah Gullah Island' on telling, preserving SC stories

Natalie and Ron Daise are storytellers.

Or, as they'd describe it, Natalie is a storyteller and Ron is a kind of keeper of stories, collecting and documenting.

Together, they have been gathering, interpreting and sharing stories in South Carolina for decades.

The couple is best known for "Gullah Gullah Island," a children's television series that aired on Nickelodeon from 1994 to 1998. Their storytelling extended well after that show ended. It's never stopped, really, and the ways they tell stories have continued to evolve, even during the pandemic.

Co-host Gavin McIntyre and I spoke with them about why they tell stories, what they see as their role in their communities now and the serendipitous way their TV show came to be.

They also shared how they’ve seen perceptions of the term “Gullah” change and why it's so important to them to show that Gullah culture and language is not only still alive but is constantly evolving.

    Listen now for more.

This is the first installment of SC Voices, an occasional Understand SC series that will feature conversational interviews with South Carolinians sharing their stories.

Decolonizing our Thanksgiving Tables and Food Narratives

Decolonizing our Thanksgiving Tables and Food Narratives

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, we’ve been thinking about the many ways this holiday bolsters colonial narratives, as well as opportunities to push back on them. This episode spotlights individual people, dishes and ingredients that are decolonizing our food system. We’re looking at our Thanksgiving plates and beyond to explore efforts to reclaim food sovereignty in Native American culture, the African diaspora, and Puerto Rico.

We start by revisiting the Thanksgiving myth and investigating the forces that continue to shape Native Americans’ food access and culinary legacy. Then we’ll share a recipe that brings Geechee culture to the Thanksgiving table. We track the history of a West African rice strain that is reintroducing a rich heritage as well as environmental resilience to American soil. And finally we learn about how one food justice collective is working to bring power and healing to Puerto Rico.
