Advance Change: Why is it so hard?

Advance Change: Why is it so hard?

What does Change mean to you?

Change is one of those words, like leadership, that has many different definitions depending on who is discussing it and the context around it.

For me, I’ve come to realize that Change is the intersection of discernment, discovery and determination, or for my accountant friends,
    Change = Discernment + Discovery + Determination.

It is human nature to dislike change and to avoid it at all costs. Regardless of human nature, change is a necessary reality and without it, crisis will occur. Not only do our teams need bold leaders to help them through the internal and external forces of change, it is one of the reasons you were hired or placed in a leadership position.

As leaders, we are expected to Advance Change in our organization and within our teams.

Leading an organization through change, positive or negative, will be one of the most challenging things you do as a leader, but can also be one of the most rewarding.

How can we make change happen?

It would be nice if we could just have a meeting, send an email or set a date on the calendar, announce the change we need and everyone would say, “Yes, I’m in,” and change happens. Unfortunately that’s not how it works.  Change happens when we are committed to these three things:

    1.     Operational Excellence

    2.     Courageous and Bold Decisions

    3.     Time

Tune in to find out what makes change so hard, and more importantly,  HOW we can lead our teams through it on a daily basis.

    Leaders advance change.

Change Happens with Don Meij - Episode 14

Change Happens with Don Meij - Episode 14

"Anybody who trades through this pandemic, it’s a privilege. And don’t abuse that privilege, and be very generous as a result of that because there’s underemployed, unemployed, under-trading or not trading businesses. And if you are trading and have the privilege to do so, then you better be very generous in all of your actions."

In the latest episode of the Change Happens podcast, Jenelle McMaster speaks with Group CEO and Managing Director at Dominos Pizza Enterprises Don Meij who explores effective leadership during a global pandemic, risk and failure, and cultivating a culture of learning.

Listen now on: Apple Podcasts or Spotify or where ever you get your favourite podcasts.

Host: Jenelle McMaster  is Managing Partner, Oceania Markets at EY.

Guest: Don Meij is Group CEO and Managing Director at Dominos Pizza Enterprises

Beginning at the end is a very good place to start

Beginning at the end is a very good place to start

There are two key themes this week; exploring ways to look at change.

One where I focus on the truth that if we want something to change, we have to change something. It feels so obvious when we say it, and yet still we can feel stuck or resistant to take the action that will make the changes we say we desire come into being.

Secondly I look at a principle of change where in order for something to begin, something else needs to end. When we think of that, it can feel hard - we often resist change because of an attachment to old thinking, old feelings, old habits. But approaching this idea as a way of empowering us can help us shift our mindset... that then shifts our actions and attitudes.

I also touch on the work of Viktor Frankl and Notes from the Universe - two ends of the same spectrum that tell us that at the deepest, most profound level, we are accountable for ourselves.

As ever, I hope you enjoy the episode. And that it provokes new or expanded thought for you. If you like it, please do leave a review on Apple Podcasts - it's how we can continue to share these thoughts with others who may enjoy them too.

This is the final episode in this series and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for being part of how the podcast has developed since the early experiment 15 weeks ago. I'll be back soon with series 2 and look forward to meeting you there.

In the meantime, I send you a hug and a wave.
