Episode 61: Sulphur Aeon "Seven Crowns And Seven Seals"

Episode #179 - Outsider European Tour - Melting in Munich; Blood, Caves and Alchemy in the Land of Mozart

In this week's episode, we continue chronicling Night Demon's September 2023 European headlining tour.  The narrative picks up with a late night, post-gig drive through the German countryside en route to Munich for a Monday night show at the Backstage venue.  You will hear about the band's sweltering performance in a packed house, and the pitfalls of government-imposed sound decibel limiters and woefully substandard band apartments.  From there the tour rolled on to the Escape Metal Corner in Vienna, where a tiny stage in a cramped, hot venue created logistical challenges for band and crew alike. The guys explain the importance of delivering the best show possible no matter the conditions. A freak injury bloodied a band member. Yet the tour continued to Salzburg for a killer show in a cave built into the side of a mountain as the oppressive heat wave finally abated. A rare sightseeing opportunity presented itself the following morning.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E7

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E7

Episode 7 of Season 5 aired on 17 February 2022.  We kicked off with a track called 'Bulletproof' of Paul Stanley's second solo album titled Live To Win.  It was topical given the difficult times we are living in, it seems like everyone is going through some serious shit.   We added a bit more inspiration to the airwaves with Billy Squiers' track 'Stronger' off Here and Now.  It was a fairly quiet night by TSORR standards not a lot of people calling in so the show sort of had a life of its own.

Cold Chisel's cover of 'Knocking on Heavens Door' showed once again just what a great live band they were.  Ian Moss's guitar work as always just shines.  Speaking of guitar work, there was plenty of it, Black Label Society, Exodus, Megadeth, and Iron Maiden all showcasing some of the greatest guitarists around.  For a bit of UK Punk, we called on Sex Pistols with 'Did U No Wrong' and Stiff Little Fingers with 'Wait and See'.  The latter perfectly demonstrates the wonderful ability of Jake Burns to shift quickly into 'really aggressive now' mode.

Local music was ably handled by Roland Suttie, Johnathan Martin, and a seriously powerful track from Code 106 of a new EP called Alium.  Code 106 are sounded really good on this, I was suitably impressed.  From there we went on a Southern Rock jag for a few tracks, Kid Rock, Lynryd Skynyrd, and Whisky Myers all delivering the goods.  'Fill My World' the sad tale of Myles Kennedy's little dog Mozart alone in a storm and Sixx A.M. with 'Maybe It's Time' gave us a good 10 min of emotional stuff and it was tempting to mine that vein further, instead I opted for a mood-lifting end of show blitz of high octane 3 min tracks from The Offspring, The Distillers and Joan Jett (with her Blackhearts of course).  We closed out with UK Metal stalwarts Desolation Angels and a sublime track from Piet Botha.  Hope you enjoy it.

Artists featured:  Paul Stanley, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Billy Squier, Anthrax, Manowar, Black label Society, Rose Tattoo, Cold Chisel, Powderfinger, MC5, Megadeth, Children of Bodom, Exodus, Rage Against the Machine, Code 106, Johnathan Martin, Roland Suttie, Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Whiskey Myers, The Black Crowes, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, Iron Maiden, Saxon, Motörhead, Slash (feat Myles Kennedy), Sixx A.M., Kreator, Warrior Soul, The Offspring, The Distillers, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Desolation Angels, Piet Botha

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E47

Episode 47 of season 4 aired on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on Thursday 25 Nov.  We kicked off 'nicely' as requested by one of the ladies in the office.  Nicely lasted about 2 minutes and then we were off and running with Manowar.  We went onto the SA music early and took a listen to a track of Albert Frost's new release called Sacred Sound.  Johnathan Martin got a chance next with '7 Years Bad Luck'.  In between, we had a bit of Queensrÿche and Gary Moore before getting back to South Africa and two of our most iconic SA bands, Dog Detachment and Asylum Kids.  The Whatsapp line comments confirmed the wisdom of this selection.

We took in a lekker little early '70s twosome with Free's track 'Remember' and Elton John with 'Razor Face' off the fantastic Madman Across the Water album.  A highlight for me was the new release from Pirates of Radio called 'Parasite'.  I reckon it's their best release so far and you should wake up with it stuck in your head.  Things took a turn for the weird with Electric Six's 'Danger, High Voltage' which was fun to hear again.

Then it was time for a bit of Metal courtesy of Iron Maiden Judas Priest and Hell Fire.   The Jesus and Mary Chain, Falling Mirror, John Mellencamp and Earl Slick with a  superb cover of Sam Cooke's ' A Change is Gonna Come' provided a bit of respite before we built all the way back up to Warrior Soul, In Flames and the phenomenal Parkway Drive.  All in all, it was pretty, pretty, pretty good.

Artists featured:  Joe Bonamassa, Manowar, Ace Frehley, Boston, Triumph, Devils Train, Blackberry Smoke, W.A.S.P., Albert Frost, Johnathan Martin, Burning Rain, Gary Moore, Massive Wagons, Queensrÿche, Dog Detachment, Asylum Kids, Def Leppard, Black Sabbath, Free, Elton John, My Chemical Romance, Linkin Park, Pirates of Radio, Electric Six, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Hell Fire, Metallica, The Jesus And Mary Chain, Falling Mirror, John Mellencamp, Springbok Nude Girls, Earl Slick, The Cult, Joan Jett, Warrior Soul, In Flames, Parkway Drive, Bob Dylan.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E24

Episode 24 of Season 4 went live on air at 7 pm on 17 June 2021, kicking off with Billy Balloon Head' by Massive Wagons, which is guaranteed to get you into a good mood.  Next up some Iced Earth and a follow up on the Jon Schaeffer situation before we hit some indie type stuff in the form of Walking Papers and We Are Augustines,

As promised there was a lot of SA music on the show to make up for the last episode where SA music was a bit short-changed.  We had LA Cobra, Sugar Drive, Deadline, The Fismits, Springbok Nude Girls, and Sunken State all flying the local flag.   It is great to hear such a diverse range of rock from these bands, the talent in SA is amazing.  Incidentally, The Fismits is Rebel Rock Radio's own Mark Biagio's band,  check out their album Before the Hindsight.  Sunken State is my current favorite metal band, these guys are going to go far if lovers of metal get behind them.  Following on from Sepultura near the end of the show they absolutely hold their own and I explain why they are so good.

Generation X with 'Kiss Me Deadly', The Stranglers, and Social Distortion took care of the Punk and gave me a chance to take some cheap shots at the government.  W.A.S.P. with 'The Idol' off  Blackie Lawless's masterpiece Crimson Idol was a highlight for me as was revealing who played the brilliant Comfortably Numb-esque solo on that track.  There is lots more here so go ahead and check it out, all comments welcome, catch me on The Story of Rock and Roll Facebook page or on the website.

Artists featured:  Massive Wagons, Manowar, Iced Earth, Walking Papers,  We Are Augustines, Skid Row, Ratt, Kiss, The Rolling Stones, Accept, LA Cobra, KK's Priest, Halford, Kid Rock, John Mellencamp, Mötley Crüe, Hinder, Megadeth, Marilyn Manson, W.A.S.P., Demon, Savage, Generation X, The Stranglers, Social Distortion, Sugar Drive, Springbok Nude Girls, Deadline, The Fismits, Volbeat, Gary Moore, Guns 'n' Roses, Blackberry Smoke, Sepultura, Sunken State, The Distillers & Mark Knopfler

    #2 – Joey DeMaio's Budgie-Smuggler

Episode 2 of the podcast that takes a queer look at the world of heavy metal sees us discuss Manowar's signature… "outfits", and just how close that classic photo shoot came to fooling our gaydars.

We also delve deep into one of Testament's best songs to examine why it might resonate differently with members of the LGBT+ community.

Plus there's our usual ramblings about what music's been getting us off our chairs this week. (Also plenty of sass.)

[EDIT - this episode is from the early days of the podcast. Sound quality may not be as good as later episodes.]

The Story of Rock and Roll: S3E2

The Story of Rock and Roll: S3E2

Season 3 Episode 2 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show was broadcasted live on Rebel Rock Radio between 7 and 10 pm on Thursday 27 August 2020.  It took place from behind the bar in Planet Rock and it was one of the most enjoyable shows I have done in ages.  The music was really great we had everything from Slayer to Lita Ford.  Most of the technical problems have been resolved and the odd mistake is rooted in stupidity more than anything else.  For example, I have sorted out the monitors and can listen to the show without the headphones but there is a delay so when the song ends on the monitors its already been over for a few seconds in the headphones, you may hear one or two of those lapses, but I the words of the Who I “Won’t get fooled again”.

The show kicked off with Iron Maiden and a Live version of 'The Number of The Beast', and the front row was filled out by ACDC and Metallica with 'The Thing That Should Not Be'.  Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown sounded particularly cool as did Dino Jelusic’s outfit Animal Drive.  The new Bush album got another airing with a track called ‘Send in the Clowns’ which reminded me of parliament.  Oasis made a welcome return as did Alice in Chains with 'Rain When I Die'.  It was also lekker to catch ZZ Top’s 'Big Shiny Nine'.

I am still not happy with the microphone and I’ll have to do a bit more work, it’s better but not right.  As I said last week, I suspect you are here for the music not to hear me talk kak and the music sounds great so it’s all good.  The highlight of the show for me was Heaven Shall Burn with their epic dual-language masterpiece Expatriate.  I advised pulling up the lyrics before I played it, the German part, in particular, is powerful as Thanos.  Other than that we had Johnathan Martin, The Uninvited and The Springbok Nude Girls representing South Africa, Scorpions for Germany, Oasis for the UK and plenty of USA in the form of Mötley Crüe & Megadeth.  There is so much here, a 3-hour show is fantastic.  The big trick was to get the ending right because the show kicks out at exactly 10 pm and it will cut off even the lord’s prayer.  I nailed that sucker and you get the full song.

Artists featured:  Mötley Crüe, Halestorm, Scorpions, Manowar, Bruce Springsteen, Animal Drive, The Uninvited, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Tom Petty, Johnathan Martin, Soundgarden, Adrenaline Mob, Megadeth, Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown, ACDC, U.D.O., Sebastian Bach, The Gaslight Anthem, My Chemical Romance, Lita Ford, Avenged Sevenfold, ZZ Top, Queensrÿche, Slayer, Oasis, Cinderella, Bush, Trouble, Wonderboom, Springbok Nude Girls, Blink 182, Heave Shall Burn, Texas Hippie Coalition, We Are Harlot, Joe Jackson, Alice in Chains, Neil Young
