Sofia Coppola — PRISCILLA, from source to soundtrack

In a wide-ranging interview, Sofia Coppola tells host Rico Gagliano all about the making of her new Priscilla Presley biopic—from the Kubrick flick that inspired her opening sequence...to picking the soundtrack full of pop tunes by just about everyone except Elvis.

It's a follow-up to last week's career-spanning look at the themes threaded through Coppola's films and fashions—and a fitting end to our season.

Season 5, titled Tailor Made, dives deep into the worlds of film and fashion. Each episode tackles a landmark movie that captured a major fashion look of an era, and then decodes what that look meant—to the culture that spawned it, the people who wore it, and the audiences who watched it on screen.

Sofia Coppola's PRISCILLA will stream exclusively on MUBI in the UK, Germany, Turkey, India  and Latin America starting March 1. It is also currently in cinemas in many countries. For tickets and showtimes, visit mubi.com/priscilla

"Performers We Love: Lily Gladstone"—our series dedicated to Oscar frontrunner and scenestealer Lily Gladstone—is available to stream in many countries.

Host Rico Gagliano talks with Coppola, her brother (and collaborator) Roman, and her award-winning costume designers past and present, to learn how the director depicts her characters’ search for identity in beautiful, difficult worlds.

Charlotte Corday, the Angel of Assassination

Charlotte Corday, the Angel of Assassination

A minor aristocrat, Charlotte Corday could have lived an ordinary life in Normandy in the 18th century. Instead, she took it upon herself to kill the prominent leader of the Jacobin revolutionaries - a newspaper writer named Marat - while he soaked in his bathtub.

Ep 50: Let them have Portillo's: The saga of Marie Antoinette

Ep 50: Let them have Portillo's: The saga of Marie Antoinette

Back to basics with the doomed relationship of Marie Antoinette and King Louis the XVI of France! Our dear Marie was just a child when she was shipped to France to marry the future king. It takes a long time for her to have a baby, so she has an excellent time in the meantime. There are many diamonds, chateaus, literal big-wigs, gambling, operas, and even a pretend French village. All on the grounds of Versailles.

Until, of course, she is executed for crimes against the nation.

Learn more about this fascinating window into pre-revolutionary lavish life!

Extended Trailer: Revolutions ... redemption can take generations

Extended Trailer: Revolutions ... redemption can take generations

Coming Soon: Inspired by true events, Revolutions presents an alternate history in which Marie Antoinette escapes the French Revolution, arrives in America and, desperate for redemption and a chance to restore her family’s honour, sets out on an improbable quest to rule again.

Meanwhile, in a divided present-day America, history is turned on its head as Marie’s descendant Louise Antoinette is driven to lead a modern-day revolution against a polarizing new President – who also happens to be her father…

    SYNOPSIS

What do you do when you’re a Queen and all of the wealth, power and influence that you’ve always had – and assumed you’d have forever – is ripped from you? Revolutions presents a dramatic alternate history – and present – in which Marie Antoinette escapes the French Revolution and arrives in America to begin a new life with little more than her two children and the clothes on her back. She has been given a clean slate – a second chance to not only live, but to finally live life her way.

But Marie has grand plans. Desperate to redeem herself and honor her family’s legacy (her mother was the popular Empress of Austria), Marie dreams of another improbable rise to power. She yearns to prove that she can be an effective – and popular – leader. Thanks to her time as Queen, she already enjoys relationships with the likes of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, and Americans would be largely sympathetic to her – after all they would not have won the American Revolution without her and King Louis XVI’s significant financial aid. Besides, this is America – isn’t anything possible?

And yet Marie is torn. Nobody knows better the terrible price that can come with power. Would the wiser choice not be to settle down, live a quiet, anonymous life and raise her children without the continued threat of the guillotine? A dramatic transformation potentially awaits this former Queen, but will redemption and honor come at a price too dear to pay...?

Meanwhile, in a parallel storyline set in the present-day, in an ironic twist on history, we find Marie’s descendant Louise about to lead a modern-day revolution against a polarizing new president - her own father. Much like Marie,  Louise too finds herself torn between redeeming the family’s honor and the terrible price that she may have to pay to do so.

In Revolutions, the two storylines are dramatically interwoven as they connect the dots between Marie’s story in the late 1700’s and Louise’s present-day story, accentuating parallel action, cause and effect, the lessons of history, recurring themes of honor and redemption and more, all resulting in a rich, multi-layered world and series.

The Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Excellent or Nothing

The Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Excellent or Nothing

In the late 1700s, one man became a celebrated fixture of Parisian salon culture: he was a prodigy fencer, and then a brilliant composer and violinists. He befriended Marie Antoinette and lead one of the city's most famous orchestras. And he was the son of an enslaved woman, fighting against the stigma of his skin color in a world where it made him hyper-visible but didn't let him be truly seen.

    Marie Antoinette

    Marie Antoinette

We all know some things about Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France before the common people got all of the monarchies beheaded and tried to establish a true republic.

We know that she loved partying. That queen threw so many parties during a time of extreme poverty and war, that the common folk nastily called her "Madame Deficit".

We know that she didn't really want to be in France. She was a princess of Austria, one of the richest and most respected kingdoms in all civilised Europe. Who would want to leave that? Well, she had to though, since she was just a political pawn used for a marriage alliance.

We also don't know this as well, but she really struggled to consummate her marriage with Prince Louis, and for a long time they did not have children.

Marie still craved children though. She wanted to be useful, a queen. And a woman's rightful place in the 1700s was as a dutiful wife and mother.

So till she could have her own children, Marie decided to kidnap one.

His name was Armand Gagné. And he was a 5-year-old orphan boy that Marie picked up on the side of the road. She paid off the child's grandmother and kept the child at the palace for her own amusement. And as luck would have it, this child would grow up to resent his "mother", much like any other teenager. Although, unlike other teenagers, Armand would go on to join the French revolution that eventually led to the death of his adoptive family.

Autor: Christoph Vormweg Von Christoph Vormweg.

HILF 27 - The Three Musketeers with Kristal Adams

HILF 27 - The Three Musketeers with Kristal Adams

Dawn usually records around her kitchen table, but as guest, Kristal Adams, recently had her cars stolen, she instead packed up the recording equipment and headed to Kristal's place near downtown Los Angeles. As it turns out, the quietest and most comfortable place to record was smack in the middle of Kristals bed. Tres bien.

00:03:55 - Dawn goes through Kristal's most exciting credits including as a writer on Legomasters, and The Circle on Netflix, and she promotes her hilarious comedy album Aint I A Wombat

00:05:12 - Kristal explains to Dawn that her lack of car has been part of the decision to move to New York City - where you don't need one! Dawn likes the idea but gives her some food for thought as she heads into living in her first 'winter climate' state.

00:09:42 - We learn a little bit more about Kristal's French husband, Fabrice, and how he has spurred both her interest in French Literature and her desire to ask ANYONE BUT HIM to tell her about it. Voila! Moi!  Dawn explains that since 'French Literature' is such a huge subject, she focused her attention on The Three Musketeers and it's author Alexander Dumas... but of course it all begins with The French Revolution.

00:12:46 - The French Revolution has to precede any in-depth conversation about French Literature because for so much of our most-loved figures it was a central event. From Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, through the Reign of Terror and past the execution of Robespierre - we give Kristal a lot to chew on around the ol' Fromage Tray.

00:22:52 - Lots of sources generally say the French Revolution ended with the execution of Robespierre in 1794 but in fact there were several more revolutions and, of course, the Emperor Napoleon

00:30:00 - With some general French History and some specific French Revolution History in our back pocket, we move on to the author of The Three Musketeers, Alexander Dumas... well, we begin with his grandparents actually: A rich white nobleman living in Haiti and an enslaved woman, named Marie-Cesette. Alexander Duma's half-black father has a incredible story of his own - one that led him to glory fighting for France aboard during the Revolution, and earned the ire of none other than Napoleon.

00:37:04 - Always feeling in the shadow of his father's greatness, and enduring the rampant racism in Paris himself, Alexander Dumas strived always to be remembered and be loved. Perhaps this is why he had no less than 4 illegitimate children and an estimated 40 mistresses. He attained some fame and wealth -experimented with drugs in a very interesting club with Victor Hugo among others - but ultimately died rather poor in the care of his son.

    --BREAK--

Listen to HIGHTAILING THROUGH HISTORY hosted by Laurel and KT

00:41:56 - After the break, we welcome into bed with us The Three Musketeers, D'Artagnan and you, of course - with a quick summary of the swashbuckling tale that has stood the test of time and had some good (and bad) movie versions over the years.

00:55:24 - As the original subject that Kristal assigned Dawn was 'French Literature' they wrap up the conversation with a couple of quick booty calls - one on Victor Hugo, author of Les Miserables. It turns out that the musical had a rather outsized impact on both Kristal and Dawn's youth.

00:59:25 - Dawn wraps up with a tip of the hat to The Marquis de Sade, the man from whom we get the phrase 'sadist' and oh so much more.

01:03:22 - Before extracting herself from Kristal's marital sheets, Dawn leaves her with one last story from the French Revolution - that of the assassination of the bathtub-bound invalid, Jean-Paul Marat at the hands of Charlotte Corday. Not only is it a bloody and interesting story, but it is the inspiration for a play written in the 1970's called: The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade. I know, right?
