Stock up on those rations and race to that bomb shelter, because it's Global Thermonuclear War! Or is it? Jay and Shua look back on 40 years of the classic movie WarGames with Matthew Broderick.

WarGames not only kept us on the edge of our seat wondering if WW3 was about to start, but it also helped to shape policies and events in our nation’s government. Come with us as we revisit a dramatic 80s cold war movie.

    What we’re Enjoying

Shua recently finished another John Scalzi novel called ‘Redshirts’, which is about exactly what you’d think….those poor bastards from science fiction that are always getting killed on away missions. But this one has a twist. They begin to realize it. Audiobook narrated by Wil Wheaton. Jay finally returned to Pandora and watched the visually rich Avatar: The Way of Water. He agreed that it was a sight to behold.

    Enjoy Movies!

1983 was a scary time in our country. We seemed to constantly be on pins and needles wondering if the Soviets were going to start an all-out nuclear war. But it was an exciting time too. The personal computer was making its way into our homes and giving us access to the outside world.

That is a brilliant recipe for a dramatic movie. Wargames became that movie, where a young computer hacker named David Lightman, played by a very young Matthew Broderick, who only had two acting credits to his name before this movie, unknowingly breaks into the military’s computer system and nearly starts World War 3.

It was very well executed and made us question the possibilities of the future. It even made President Reagan a little nervous. After watching it, he requested an investigation to research the dangers of hacking and how we could take precautions against it.

And of course, it give Wade Watts an interesting challenge to accomplish in the Ready Player One novel by Earnest Cline.

Have you experienced WarGames? Did you like experimenting with computers? Who, exactly, are you going to Paris with? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Greetings Professor Falken” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. The Cable Guy

    The Cable Guy

In The March Of Madness month continues as, this week, we're taking a looking into the sillier side of insanity as we talk about the 1996 Ben Still directed film, The Cable Guy. Starring Jim Carrey and Matthew Broderick, it follows the story of Carrey's titular cable installer as he becomes obsessed with Broderick's character, nearly driving him to the brink of insanity!

Biloxi Blues (1988) Matthew Broderick, Christopher Walken, Neil Simon, and Mike Nichols

Biloxi Blues (1988) Matthew Broderick, Christopher Walken, Neil Simon, and Mike Nichols

    Book Vs. Movie: Biloxi Blues

The 1984 Neil Simon Play Vs. the 1988 Mike Nichols Film

The Margos continue their month of plays in January (we have “Musicals in March”) with Neil Simon’s middle offer of the “Eugene Chronicles” with 1984’s Biloxi Blues. The story is a fictionalized version of the life of Simon about Eugene Morris Jerome of Brooklyn, NY, and his time as an enlisted soldier in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Starring Matthew Broderick (who played the role of Eugene in every chapter), the play was an instant hit earning Tony Awards for Best Play and Best Featured Player to Barry Miller (Arnold Epstein.) Broderick was awarded his first Tony Award as Eugene Jerome in Brighton Beach Memoirs in 1983. Miller also won the Theatre World Award and the Drama Desk Award in 1985 for Biloxi Blues, which may be why he was NOT invited to the movie. Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert would later pan the film for not hiring Miller.

The critics loved the comedy and performances, as well as Simon’s outward discussion of the treatment of Jewish people at the time.

Mike Nichols directed the 1988 film that was a huge hit as part of a wave of 1980s films set in the military. (See Stripes, Private Benjamin, and Good Morning, Viet Nam.)
In this episode, the Margos discuss the significant differences between the book and the movie and try to decide which we like better.

The Night We Never Met (1993) & Janet Varney

The Night We Never Met (1993) & Janet Varney

The brilliant and hilarious Janet Varney returns to discuss a pick from her teenage years, The Night We Never Met (1993). Both agree there is much to enjoy with the movie’s genuinely flawed characters and tougher moments. Bonus talk about how some of these fashions are alive and well today.

Keep up with all of Janet’s projects, especially The JV Club, Braving the Elements, and Truth & Justice with Bob Ruff.

Frustrated with his inconsiderate roommates, Sam (Matthew Broderick) takes turns occupying an apartment with Brian (Kevin Anderson), a sloppy husband-to-be, and Ellen (Annabella Sciorra), an aspiring painter. Although Sam and Ellen never meet in person, they fall for each other through romantic gestures left during their individual days in the apartment. Also stars Jeanne Tripplehorn, Justine Bateman, Christine Baranski, Doris Roberts, Greg Germann, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Billy Campbell, Michelle Hurst, and early career Lewis Black, Naomi Campbell, Brooke Smith, Bitty Schram, Michael Imperioli, Paul Guilfoyle, and Garry Shandling. Election (1999) Matthew Broderick, Reese Witherspoon, Chris Klein, Alexander Payne

Election (1999) Matthew Broderick, Reese Witherspoon, Chris Klein, Alexander Payne
    Book Vs. Movie: Election
The 1998 Novel Vs. the 1999 Film

The Margos have had the Tom Perrotta novel Election on their list to cover since the podcast began in 2008, but for some reason--it was not made available until this summer. Who could forget Reese Witherspoon’s performance as Tracy Flick? Matthew Broderick's last line in the Alexander Payne movie? The story is about an ambitious woman who will win her high school presidential campaign no matter what made Witherspoon a star. Her character became an avatar for people who tried too hard and were overbearing.

Tracy believes she will easily win the election, not counting one of her teachers (Mr. M.) has it in for her; one of her fellow students is doing it as a goof (nice, but not very bright Paul Warren) while his sister (Tammy) is doing it in retaliation against Paul’s girlfriend Lisa (who used to date Tammy.) The teacher who has sex with Tracy (while his wife is pregnant!) loses his job, which makes Mr. M. angry, and he feels he needs to rob her of an election win.

Now that there is a new Perrotta novel, a sequel called Tracy Flick Can’t Win, is it time to have a new look at not only her character but also the plot in the first place? Who were the villains here? Why does Mr. M. hate her so much? The Margos have so much to unpack here!

This episode is sponsored by Kensington Books and the novel Twice a Quinceaňera by Yamile Saied Méndez.

“This book will set your dreams on fire” –praise for Yamile Saied Mendez by Reese Witherspoon for Furia by Yamile Saied Méndez.

Instead of losing the deposit on her wedding venue, a jilted bride decides to throw herself a quinceañera (times two) for her 30th birthday in this effervescent rom-com from Yamile Saied Méndez, the acclaimed author of the Reese Witherspoon YA Book Club Pick FURIA. For fans of Never Been Kissed, 13 Going on 30, and The Wedding Singer…con azucar y amor.
One month short of her wedding day—and her thirtieth birthday—Nadia Palacio finds herself standing up to her infuriating, cheating fiancé for the first time in…well, ever. But that same courage doesn’t translate to breaking the news to her Argentinian family. She’s hyperventilating before facing them when she glimpses a magazine piece about a Latina woman celebrating herself—with a second quinceañera, a.k.a. Sweet 15!

Yamile (pronounced sha-MEE-lay) Saied Méndez is an Argentinian-American Pura Belpré gold medal-winning author of picture books, middle grade, young adult, and adult fiction. An inaugural Walter Dean Myers Grant recipient, she’s a graduate of the Vermont College of Fine Arts and Voices of Our Nations (VONA). Her young adult novel, Fusia, was a Reese Witherspoon X Hello Sunshine YA Pick and she’s a founding member of Las Musas, a collective of women and nonbinary Latinx creators. Born and raised in Rosario, Argentina—to a family with roots from all over the world—she now lives in Utah with her Puerto Rican husband, five multicultural kids, two bilingual dogs, and one majestic cat. 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' (featuring Kimberly Cook)

'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' (featuring Kimberly Cook)

As a righteous dude once said, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." That and countless other insanely quotable lines propelled writer/director John Hughes' 1986 hit, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, to become one of the biggest comedies of the decade. Even now, more than three decades after its release, fans are still discovering and revisiting Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Kimberly Cook returns to the show to dig into why Hughes' release is her favorite movie and why it continues to resonate with all generations decades later. We'll discuss Matthew Broderick's iconic performance, his character's key relationships, how Ferris' serves as a litmus test of the viewer's own life journey, the movie's use of breaking the fourth wall, and that age-old question: is Ferris Bueller an asshole?

So hop in your best friend's dad's Ferrari and take our latest episode for a spin. After all, if you had access to a car like that, would you take it back right away?

    SYNOPSIS

Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) has an uncanny skill at cutting classes and getting away with it. Intending to make one last duck-out before graduation, Ferris calls in sick, "borrows" a Ferrari, and embarks on a one-day journey through the streets of Chicago. On Ferris' trail is high school principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), determined to catch him in the act.

    Episode 106 - Ferris Bueller's Day Off

    Episode 106 - Ferris Bueller's Day Off

If you actually do stop and look around at the 1986 John Hughes classic "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off," there's a lot of stuff you can't miss that doesn't make sense. Are Ferris and his sister twins? Do his parents think he has the mind of the 5-year-old boy? Is Ferris a figment of Cameron's imagination? We will discuss all those and much more as we tear this iconic '80s flick.

Matthew Broderick plays Ferris Bueller, one of the most popular high school students without a social media presence in the history of the world. He acts like a baby around his parents and habitually skips school. He enjoys scheming, using people to do his bidding, grand theft auto, lip-synching on parade floats, computer hacking, changing outfits a lot, and complaining that he doesn't own a car (which, knowing what we know now about Matthew Broderick's driving record—thank god he doesn't).

29-year-old (at the time) Alan Ruck plays Cameron Frye, Ferris' sad-sack best friend who spends the whole movie moping about his daddy issues, and then destroys a priceless automobile because he's a bad son.

Pre-nose-job and pre-"Dirty Dancing" Jennifer Grey plays Ferris' sister Jeannie, who spend the whole movie chasing Ferris. Knowing the two actors dated afterward, this now makes more sense.

Convicted child porn owner Jeffrey Jones plays Principal Ed Rooney, who also spends the whole movie chasing Ferris. Which, knowing what we now know about this actor, makes this very scary.

Mia Sara plays Sloan Peterson, Ferris' younger girlfriend whose main purpose in this movie is to baby and sexually confuse Cameron while also hoping Ferris will marry her (he won't).

And Charlie Sheen basically plays himself.

Join us as we are relieved Ferris doesn't own a car, that Jeffrey Jones never catches him, try to determine which of the cliques the principal’s secretary rattles off we fit into, and as Jim discovers that he *is* Cameron Frye.
