And though his clinic is brand new, Dr. Stein has been in the field for well over a decade now.

    Maxillofacial Trauma

    Maxillofacial Trauma

As with all trauma care, an organised approach to patient assessment is essential: ensuring life threatening injuries are identified and the patient is stabilised is the priority. Facial injuries that are not affecting the airway or causing life threatening haemorrhage can be assessed as part of the secondary survey, no matter how disfiguring the injuries may appear. Today we are joined by Alf Nastri, Head of the Maxillofacial department at Royal Melbourne Hospital.

The Journey of an Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon: Meet Dr. Dre Smith, DMD

Born and raised in South Florida, Dr. Andre Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in 2015 from the University of Notre Dame where he majored in Science Pre-Professional Studies and minored in Science, Technology, and Values. Dre went on to earn his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania with a full-ride scholarship awarded through the Navy’s Health Professions Scholarship Program. He is now completing a 4-year Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at Navy Medical Center Portsmouth in Virginia.

    In this episode, Dre shares:

    • How his love of working with his hands and dad’s suggestion led him to pursuing a career in oral maxillofacial surgery

    • The importance of living your journey as it comes one step at a time. He learned about the Navy’s Health Professions Scholarship Program from another student while interviewing at dental schools. (The Army & Air Force also have these program as well.)

    • What you can overcome and achieve when you self-advocate and seek out support. Doing so helped him pass classes even after failing initial exams.

    • The difference between quitting and redirecting toward some other goal

    • How he managed anxiety associated with the fear of failure & helplessness

    • His experience as the ONLY Black male in a class of 130 students in graduate school (at an Ivy League institution) and the pressure he felt to perform

    Also mentioned:

    • Dental Admission Test (DAT)
    • Comprehensive Basic Science Examination (CBSE)
