When Life Does the Unexpected, Keep Going with Renzo Del Castillo

When Life Does the Unexpected, Keep Going with Renzo Del Castillo

2023 is nearing its end but our episodes are not. Take a deep breath, it's time for A Mental Health Break with Renzo Del Castillo.

    Areas discussed include:
-overcoming loss and change in relationships
    -competing with yourself
    -mental health benefits from traveling
-creating a legacy for his family
-the mindset needed to transform from childhood obesity to excellent health
    -being consistent in life

Renzo Del Castillo was born in Lima, Peru, in 1983, and was educated at the University of Florida, leaving with a B.A. in English, specializing in Victorian Literature, and an M.A. in Mass Communications, specializing in Intercultural Communications.

Renzo currently resides in Miami, but he prioritizes traveling to experience and be exposed to the tenets of other cultures. He strongly believes that it is through art that we find the divinity of truth, the pathway of communication with others; and that through this connection we are made whole.

About his book Still: Still is a collection of poems that focuses on the immigrant experience: a family's journey from Lima, Peru to Miami, Florida as political refugees and asylum seekers and the impact that had on the life of a boy as he grew into a man.

Renzo Del Castillo’s poems often reveal larger moral concerns, touching in their language the world of politics and betrayal that cannot help but impose upon the world of private language.

There is a lovely and intimate tone, used to remind the reader that imagination triumphs over, or sometimes through, adversity.

Moving Past Depression to Become Uniquely Normal with Matt Lesser

Moving Past Depression to Become Uniquely Normal with Matt Lesser

"Within months, the business failed and I went through a dark, suicidal depression..." Matt Lesser has a story to share: "I grew up in a small, lake community in northeast Indiana. We moved there because my dad had an opportunity to buy into a wholesale oil distributorship.

Growing up in a town of 700, living with a family business, and attending a small, Christian school (my graduating class had 7) gave me a very narrow, sheltered view of life. I quickly realized how sheltered my life had been!..."

    Additional areas discussed include:
-regular retreats for him and his employees with no technology
    -powers of solitude and silence
    -getting reflective and planning inward
    -having a support circle
-recognizing when you are getting drained
-how journaling can change your life

After college, I moved to Florida for a short while. Realizing that was not what I wanted, I moved back to Indiana, proposed to my elementary school sweetheart (we met in 3rd grade and dated from our Junior year of high school on), and were married in 1996.

Thinking I would pursue a Master's, my career took an unexpected turn. Instead of resigning, which I attempted, my dad left...and turned the business over to me.

Thinking I could do anything because I was 25, arrogant, and prideful, I was about to experience reality. Within months, the business failed and I went through a dark, suicidal depression. Nearly a year later, a new business was born from the ashes, and nearly 12 years later that business was sold. In 2021, I finally jumped "all in" into my own business, after being told by many whom I had worked with over the years that I needed to do this."

From Grieving Her Daughter's Death to Sharing Solace with Crystal Webster

From Grieving Her Daughter's Death to Sharing Solace with Crystal Webster

When Crystal Webster's daughter, Madelyn Elizabeth, was born May 19th, 2010, and then died in my arms just a few hours later I KNEW that this angel was special {I’m a little biased, I know}. She touched so many lives during her very brief one…I just didn’t know the right outlet to carry on her life, love, and legacy...

...I spent the next 5 years grieving her death, healing my heart, and working to bring my Madelyn the siblings she deserved. To this day, Madelyn remains an only child.

In 2015, during an uncommon moment of enlightenment, the concept of Sharing Solace hit me like a bolt of lightning. The only way to describe it is that Madelyn knew I was ready to begin to heal - and help others do the same - so she sent the idea to me herself.

I realized the gifts I received when Maddie was born - the gifts that once brought me so much comfort - were now bringing back the pain of losing her. I couldn’t keep seeing them every day and have a healthy mind {that realization in and of itself provided its own source of grief and guilt}. These gifts were not given to me to be put in a box in the back of a closet - but that’s where they sat.

Sharing Solace officially launched on May 19, 2018 - Madelyn Elizabeth’s would-be 8th birthday. I hope we’ve made Miss Maddie proud!

E68: InvisiYouth Chat Sessions with founder of The Diabetes Football Community and member to the Wales National Futsal team, Chris Bright

Founder of The Diabetes Football Community, Type 1 Diabetes advocate and member of the Wales National Futsal Team, Chris Bright, decided that allowing the power of community and sport to create growth in young people living with Type One Diabetes was a perfect combo. After being diagnosed with T1D as a kid, Chris worked hard to continue playing football, even joining the Wales Futsal International team. But he knew this fusion could tackle stigmas associated with the diagnosis and create positive peer support, so in 2017 he founded The Diabetes Football Community, and this combination has grown ever since.

Here’s the Top Four Takeaways from the podcast:

    1. At 3:44 Chris and Dominique get real on what makes community-based support uniquely valuable for young people living with chronic illness, how creating community through interest over diagnosis could be the more valuable mindset, and how Chris works hard to advocate for young men with T1D diagnoses to break down stigmas.
    2. At 22:49 Chris reveals the superlatives in his life, like working with the T1D, what makes their activism unique, and major memorable moments with the football players that’ve come through The Diabetes Football Community.
    3. Intermission is STORY TIME at 39:55 and Chris brings us back to when he was playing for the Wales Futsal International team and the race against the clock to get his T1D numbers to get down to the right number to play.
    4. And we wrap up the episode at 48:08 with Chris and Dominique talking about what ways young people living with chronic illness/disability can recognize their unique stressors and find ways to be empowered to handle those stressors, and the best piece of advice for those with chronic illness/disability that want to give sports a try.

Your Top 5 Excuses For Not Seeking Personal Growth

Your Top 5 Excuses For Not Seeking Personal Growth

    Show Notes:
We often will consider our own excuses to be reasons because we don’t want to admit that we aren’t doing what we should be or that a mistake has been made.

But honestly, it doesn’t matter what you decided to tell yourself to mask the truth, it’s still an excuse you are trying to pass off as a reason to avoid something you need to just find the courage to face.

In the book of Joshua, God is raising up Joshua to take the lead, now that Moses has died. And God is telling him several times to not be afraid, to believe that God has led him to this point & has his back. God also reminds him to follow in the ways Moses taught him because these are instructions God gave to Moses. Basically, do what God tells you to do & everything will turn out as it should.

Joshua 1:9, “This is my command-be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

If you stay still too long, you might lack the experience & abilities needed to move onto that next season, the next level in life you’re supposed to ascend to. God is going to be there to help you with everything, but you STILL have to do the work.

Proverbs 13:4, “The soul of a lazy man desires, and has nothing; But the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.”

Desire to have something will only get you as far as your mind can take you. But that’s not enough to make it happen. You have to take action.

Here are your top 5 reasons that are actually excuses for why you’re not seeking any personal growth:

    1. Blaming External Circumstances
      1. It’s common to blame the environment you grew up in or the environment you’re currently in for why you’re not pursuing personal growth.
      2. We also can blame other people in our life that we claim are getting in our way of seeking personal growth.
    2. Lack of Motivation
      1. Instead of developing discipline we often lean on motivation to always be there to pick us up & keep us going.
    3. Past Failures
      1. It’s reliving the pain that happened in the past & allowing those experiences to prevent us from trying again, whether it’s the same thing or something new.
    4. Fear of Judgement
      1. It’s fear of judgment, other people’s opinions, and being rejected that prevent people from working on themselves because they are so wrapped up in worry & anxiety of the worst-case scenario happening.
      2. Proverbs 29:25, “Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety.”
      3. Galatians 1:10, “Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.”
    5. Lack of Awareness
      1. Some people really aren’t aware that they should be working on themselves to become their best selves.
      2. Or they aren’t sure WHAT to work on.
      3. We should try to be working on something we know will benefit us. Just because there isn’t anything that is broken doesn’t mean there isn’t anything that couldn’t use a tune-up.

What A Feeling - Managing Troublesome Emotions

What A Feeling - Managing Troublesome Emotions

In today's episode we talk about feelings and emotions. As therapists we always encourage our clients to express their feelings and emotions. We discuss why it matters to get in touch with your feelings and emotions.

Our emotions represent our lived experience and they are personal to us. Getting in touch with our feelings and emotional reactions will provide us with information about how we relate to the world and interact with others. We often distinguish between 'positive' and 'negative' emotions and often struggle to express the former.

Our emotional responses are learned and therefore they can also be reviewed and changed if necessary.

We talk about interoception: our ability to consciously or unconsciously sense, access and identify physiological and emotional signals that come from within us. The more awareness we have about our internal state, the more able we are to emotionally regulate effectively. With a strong sense of interoception we can more readily identify our emotions and respond appropriately to signals for example of (perceived) danger.

We discuss approaches to managing challenging feeling and emotions more effectively so that you don't get overrun or controlled by your internal sensations.

How to Go Through the Problem, Not Around It - Learning to Persevere

How to Go Through the Problem, Not Around It - Learning to Persevere

    Show Notes:
"God may not always remove challenges, but He will ALWAYS provide a way THROUGH them.”

This is an Instagram quote I saw recently. And it was the inspiration for this episode.

No one WANTS to experience problems or go through struggles. And when we REALLY don’t want to experience them, we sometimes go to great lengths to avoid having to experience any pain at all.

But the best way to the other side often isn’t over, but through. We have to persevere and get to the other side of the struggle. It’s the way we learn the most, grow the most, and change the most. And each season of life is different & brings on different challenges to learn from. It’s a blast in hindsight.

I recently shared a video on socials talking about how some people believe that when they become a Christian, they think their problems will instantly disappear or at least minimize dramatically. When, in reality, the number of problems & struggles often go up because we are being tested and because we were PROMISED to struggle.

John 16:33, “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

But despite the struggle, God is still WITH us when we are going through the pain because He knows it won’t be easy for us, but that it IS important we go through and endure certain things. God also brings comfort & peace in times of trouble.

💖 James 1:2-4, “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.”

Christian or not, though, we must endure hard times.

Here are my 4 steps on How to Go Through the Problem & Not Around It:

    1. Identify the Problem & the Root Cause
      1. Clearly define the problem. What is the CRUX of the issue?
      2. Go a little deeper to discover the ROOT CAUSE.
      3. We are defining the WHAT & WHY of the problem in this first step.
    2. Come Up With & Evaluate Possible Solutions
      1. Spend some time coming up with possible solutions to your problem.
      2. Evaluate what solution would fit you best based on what you can or can’t do, if there are risks involved, whether it solves some or all of the problem, and if this solves the problem within your timeline.
    3. Create an Action Plan & Take the First Step
      1. Create your plan of attack with a timeline attached to it.
      2. Take the First Step
        1. Commit to taking the first step as soon as possible.
        2. Once you get yourself in the middle of the problem/struggle, you often can’t retreat and will have to keep going.
    4. Evaluate the Results
      1. Determine if the solution and action steps you chose are working well enough.
      2. If what you decided to do isn’t working out as you hoped, shift to something different. If it IS working out, consider if you have the capacity to do more of that thing or not. Don’t give up just because the first attempt didn’t work out.

What We Say Matters - Our Words Contain Death & Life

What We Say Matters - Our Words Contain Death & Life

    Show Notes:
The words we say to ourselves and to others carry heavy things.

Those heavy things can be really good and encouraging and helpful, but it could also be attacking and hurtful and vicious. It just depends on what our motives are, where our heart is, and how much we are allowing our emotions to control our actions & responses.

We can have positive intentions when we use our words, when it’s for building people up, helping them solve a problem or offer advice/knowledge that is requested. But there are also negative intentions with our words, sometimes when we don’t even realize it. We can say harsh, evil things to others to hurt them on purpose, we can also spread false information for our own gain and say horrible things because we allow our emotions to be in control, which ends up allowing ourselves to react to whatever the situation is.

Again, it just depends on what our intent is. Regardless of the intent, there are consequences to our words.

We aren’t perfect, so we WILL falter, sin & make mistakes. But we NEED to take responsibility for these things & do our best to change our ways.

Whether you’re a Christian or not, you can understand how important it is that we choose what we say carefully and know there will be consequences to our choices.
Let me share with you some ways we can know we are using our words for good & in life-giving purposes, rather than negative, harmful ways:

    1. Speaking Words of Humility
      1. If we are talking about things that point to our own faults & struggles, then we are sharing about our own experiences & struggles. We could be sharing these things to be a cautionary tale for someone else, how we recovered & got through it or to demonstrate how we have grown in that specific area.
    2. Speaking Words of Truth
      1. When we aren’t spreading false information, spreading knowledge that isn’t ours (gossip) or using our words to manipulate others, we are using our words in a positive way.
    3. Speaking Words of Compassion
      1. Being kind & compassionate to others and ourselves is a good way to use our words. We end up comforting those that are hurting, including ourselves if we speak this way in our minds & out loud.
    4. Speaking Words of Building Others Up
      1. When we are encouraging others or ourselves, we are using our words in a wonderfully positive & helpful way. We are doing the work of helping someone no longer sit in their pit of despair, but to pick themselves back up again.
      2. We do need to be careful we are not doing the work of encouragement for the sake of controlling what they do or manipulating them into something that is only beneficial for you. It needs to be free of selfish gain & of a true, giving heart.
    5. Speaking Words of Wisdom & Correction
      1. When someone is in the wrong, we can be gentle, yet purposeful with our words in helping them figure out what they should be doing instead of what is currently happening. But this NEEDS to happen without tearing them down or trying to induce shame in them in the process.

Creators and hosts of Two Disabled Dudes Podcast, Sean Baumstark and Kyle Bryant on the episode, both live with a rare disease called Friedreich’s Ataxia, and competed in several long distance bike rides like Race Across America, which was featured in the award-winning documentary “The Ataxian.” Since starting Two Disabled Dudes in 2016, Kyle and Sean have released over 200 episodes, framing their show around having insightful conversations with humor with special guests across the rare disease, public speaking, athlete space and beyond to show anyone can live a life defined by their own terms.

Here’s the Top Four Takeaways from the podcast:

    1. At 3:56, Sean, Kyle and Dominique get chatting about the origin of Two Disabled Dudes and what’s kept them excited for over 200 episodes, how being diagnosed in young adulthood framed the way they’ve grown in life, and lots of great pieces of advice on being a multi-hyphenated worker and needing to find success in that all important work-life balance.
    2. At 23:32 the trio dishes out the topic and guest they’d love to have on their show, how the best tools to get into podcasting are the most affordable (and free!) and each give their advice on how to best be prepared when starting a new passion project like a podcast show.
    3. Intermission is STORY TIME at 42:03 gets real as they share stories about their experiences with taxis and why those complicated yet humorous situations may even lead to a feature film about taxis and disability.
    4. And we end the episode at 49:03 Sean and Kyle get majorly empowering and talk about how prominent cycling has become in their lives and why every person, especially those with a chronic illness or disability, should find their activity that lets them feel freedom, and give their tangible advice for how to find fun and accomplishment in your work when you’re doing it for a long time.

E60: InvisiYouth Chat Sessions with Two-Time Paralympic Sled Hockey Gold Medalist, Jack Wallace

E60: InvisiYouth Chat Sessions with Two-Time Paralympic Sled Hockey Gold Medalist, Jack Wallace

Welcome back to a new season of InvisiYouth Chat Session, we’re in Season 5 and jumping right in with our chat shot-styled podcast with the first of our incredible lineup of special guests. This guy embodies the mindset of the power of sports, it’s two-time Paralympic Sled Hockey Gold Medalist, Jack Wallace.  After a boating accident resulted in Jack having a partial right leg amputation, Jack leaned on his love of sports, specifically ice hockey, to reclaim the passions in his life. He now plays with the US Hockey National Sled Hockey team, national titles and Paralympic medals under his belt, along with training to compete in paracanoe.

Here’s the Top Four Takeaways from the podcast:

    1. At 3:30, Jack and Dominique talk about a subject they both relate to and thousands of young people with illness/disability experience: the divide in life with pre and post chronic-illness or disability. Jacks talks about adjusting to life after his accident and how to tackle those ‘what if’ thoughts when we’re adjusting to life with illness/disability. Plus, they give their best tips to tackle when frustration pops up.
    2. At 17:33, it’s all about chronic illness/disability and masculinity and how to break the stigmas surrounding the young guys in this community. Jack opens up about what are some of the masculinity troupes that interfere in guys feeling comfortable to open up and get real about their feelings/emotions. And they talk about the ways young guys can build their confidence, and what’s the top tips to sharpening your community like Jack did with his teammates so you can boost your confidence to confide.
    3. Intermission is STORY TIME at 36:43 and Jack gives double the stories about how perhaps it’s a good thing for Team USA Sled Hockey when something goes awry for Jack right before a gold medal game.
    4. And we end the podcast at 43:24 as Jack talks about how he got into adaptive sports, why a place called Camp No Limits thrust him into a world of diverse representation and community, what he’s gained physically and mentally from these two parasports being in his life, and the funny place Jack had his two gold medals during this interview!
