Dork out everywhere â¦
Simple, Yet Satisfying
We’ve got Jamie Lee’s Oscar nom; Madonna fans in a tizzy; Ticketmaster on Capitol Hill; a lucrative flight attendant job; Meryl Streep joins “Only Murders;” Shakira catches her man with jam; cheating Wordle; police to run a DNA test on Santa; HBO kills “Gossip Girl;” you can’t have your nudity and alcohol at the same time in Utah; Dolly rounds out her rock album; an old 747 to be parked in Vegas; and, the M&Ms spokescandies get 86’d (or is it a trick?). That, and more pop culture craziness.
Still Comfy? Mamma Mia

153: Author Randall Kenneth Jones Introduces RUBY, the Next Great Literary Heroine
Randall Kenneth Jones is an author, keynote speaker, comic actor, communications pro and host of the popular Jones.Show podcast.
His literary journey began with his 2016 book, a celebrity interview-infused, feel-good opus entitled “Show Me: Celebrities, Business Tycoons, Rock Stars, Journalists, Humanitarians, Attack Bunnies & More!”
His first fiction book, RUBY, was released on 9/23/22 and published by Mark Victor Hansen of CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL fame.
A playful mystery, defined by the author as “more of a ‘who is she’ than a whodunnit,” RUBY follows an appealing cast of mature characters who not only rediscover and reinvent themselves but reshape our view of the words “holiday spirit” in the process.
In the words of pop culture icon Erin Brockovich, “[RUBY] evokes memories of “The Golden Girls,” “Harry Potter,” and even “Peyton Place” — everybody seems to be up to something—yet [Jones] stays true to his ongoing quest to look for the best in people. He shines in his ability to simultaneously embrace the laughter and tears while deftly peeling back the layers to expose the inner truth. And though Randy never preaches to the reader from a literary pulpit, RUBY has much to teach about the ageless art of being human.”

The Giver (2014) Lois Lowry, Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep. Brenton Thwaites & Alexander Skarsgard
The 1993 Classic 1993 Novel by Lios Lowry & the 2014 Movie
The Margos continue their âBanned Book Monthâ with The Giver by Lois Lowry, one of the most praised young adult novels of the 1990s that is also one of the most challenged books of the last 30+ years. Lowry based the story partly on her âarmy bratâ upbringing with its strictness and her desire to honor lifeâs journey throughout its ups and downs. We can forget that other people do not have that privilege by wanting to live in a world without pain.
In the novel, our lead character, Jonas, lives in a Community where âsamenessâ is desired, and no one wants to stand out. Everyone has a role designed for them, and there is no music or dancing. Desire and wanting are considered âbad,â and at 12, you are given your âadultâ career.
Jonas is made a Receiver of Memory by an Elder and is training for the job when he learns that not perfect babies are âreleasedâ from the community and taken âElsewhere.â Jonas learns his father does his job, which enrages him, making him want to leave.
In the end, Jonas and âThe Giverâ decide to have him sneak away with baby Gabriel and try to find life on his own while saving the Community to learn to live with memories and emotions.
Lois Lowry won the Newberry Award in 1994 and wrote several sequels to the story. (Jonas lives, by the way.) WHY IS IT BANNED IN SO MANY SCHOOLS????
The film stars Jeff Bridges, who wanted direct it with his father, Lloyd Bridges, as the lead. When he died in 1998, the project went into turnaround. It was released by the Weinstein Company (BARF) in 2014.
So between the book and the film, which did we like better?
In this ep, the Margos discuss:
Lois Lowry and her world of young adult fiction
Banned Books and recent U.S. issues with this at schools across the nation
The themes of the book
The main changes in the film adaptation
The cast: Jeff Bridges (The Giver,) Brenton Thwaites (Jonas,) Odeya Rush (Fiona,) Katie Holmes (Jonasâ mother,) Meryl Streep The Chief Elder,) Alexander Skarsgard (Jonasâ father,) Cameron Monaghan (Asher,) Taylor Swift (Rosemary,) Emma Tremblay (Lily), and Thabo Rametsi as Robbie.

Alternate Don’t Look Up
Don’t Look Up is currently one of Netflix’s most watched movies. Why? Really only because of the star-studded cast. Also the comet that is about to hit earth. Or is it an asteroid? Anyway, this movie needs an alternate ending badly. Rob Newton and Alex Tourje have a guest to talk about the film in this week’s episode.

STEPHANIE SZOSTAK: The Importance of Mental Health As An Artist
French-American, Stephanie Szostak (show-stack) acts, writes and speaks.
She is currently starring on ABC’s hit series A MILLION LITTLE THINGS, is working on a book called "Oh The TiDDies You'll Grow!" and speaks to various organizations (from corporate to non-profits supporting immigrant women, teens and mental health) encouraging people to "find their truth... with love & humor."
Szostak got a late start on the acting scene (age 30) and had the willingness to disrupt her life, leaving her career in the corporate world behind to seek an authentic life. Over the past decade, she has played alongside Meryl Streep, Robert Downey Jr., Jeff Bridges, Steve Carrell, Paul Rudd, Matt Damon, Kevin Bacon, Ryan Reynolds and more.
Transforming her own false starts, setbacks, rejection and loss, she brings forward relatable and impactful stories to help anyone embrace their uniqueness. As part of that mission, she is passionate about encouraging people to discover their own truth and individuality.
From being told "You should have never happened" as her career grew so did the pressure, causing her performance to be negatively affected by feelings of unworthiness and fear. In response, she began to work on her mental game and looked to the actors she was intimidated by for answers. She was surprised to learn they too suffered from negative inner dialogue. This pushed her to address mindset and discover its interconnection with performance. Fascinated by what she learned, she created her own “playbook” to incorporate new skills to be more confident and playful when the red light turned on.
Knowing she is where she is only thanks to the help of so many, Stephanie thrives to help and connect people to support their pursuit of their darn naked truth!
Most notable projects include The Devil Wears Prada, Ironman 3, Dinner for Schmucks, We Bought a Zoo, ABC’s hit series, A Million Little Things and USA Network series, Satisfaction.
