    Relationships in Medicine Part 1: Love in the Time of Medicine

    Relationships in Medicine Part 1: Love in the Time of Medicine

    Hello and welcome to part one of our new “Relationships in Medicine” series. This series will explore how romantic relationships can work during medical school, the challenges that these relationships often face, and helpful tools and strategies for navigating these challenges. We will host in-depth discussions and explore the personal stories of unique couples with partners who are in medical training.

    In this episode, we host returning guest star Ellie Sidler (UCCOM class 2022) and discuss key challenges that all medical school relationships face, including dealing with absence, competitive stress, and the "postponement trap". We also give advice on contending with these challenges, making time for your relationships, and how you and your partner can prosper even while under the fire of stress.

    Giving Rewards – Can it Backfire?

    Giving Rewards – Can it Backfire?

    Would you make noise for a dime?

    Legend has it about a quiet neighborhood where group of loud  kids showed up, turning it into their playground. Playing music, dancing and disturbing the neighborhood ambiance.
    Begging and reasoning didn’t help much, it actually seemed to motivate them. A wise man in the neighborhood then took an unusual course of action. To the bewilderment of the neighbors, he went to the kids and make a deal: he offered them fifty cents for every disturbance they make. “We actually like noice, we want to reward you for it.” He said to them.

    The arrangement kept up for a while: the kids danced and made an effort to be as noicy as possible. In turn, the wise man kept his part of the deal and paid them their promised reward on time.

    A few noisy days passed and suddenly the money started going down from 50 cents to 40, and then to 20, and then to 10.
    Needless to say, the kids were not very happy with the decline and left the neighborhood. “for 10 cents he should look for others to make noise!” They protested.
    The neighbors and the wise man weren’t very upset as they left as serenity returned to the neighborhood.

    Pride

    Pride

    Be not wise in your own eyes;
    fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.

    ~Proverbs 3:7 (ESV)

    There are six things that the Lord hates,
    seven that are an abomination to him:
    17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
    and hands that shed innocent blood,
    18 a heart that devises wicked plans,
    feet that make haste to run to evil,
    19 a false witness who breathes out lies,
    and one who sows discord among brothers.
    20 My son, keep your father's commandment,
    and forsake not your mother's teaching.

    ~Proverbs 6:16-20

    Whoever belittles his neighbor lacks sense,
    but a man of understanding remains silent.

    ~Proverbs 11:12

    By insolence comes nothing but strife,
    but with those who take advice is wisdom. ~Proverbs 13:10
    Before destruction a man's heart is haughty,
    but humility comes before honor.

    ~Proverbs 18:12

    “Scoffer” is the name of the arrogant, haughty man
    who acts with arrogant pride.

    ~Proverbs 21:24

    Let another praise you, and not your own mouth;
    a stranger, and not your own lips.

    ~Proverbs 27:2

    There are those who curse their fathers
    and do not bless their mothers.
    12 There are those who are clean in their own eyes
    but are not washed of their filth.
    13 There are those—how lofty are their eyes,
    how high their eyelids lift!
    14 There are those whose teeth are swords,
    whose fangs are knives,
    to devour the poor from off the earth,
    the needy from among mankind.

    ~Proverbs 30:11-14

    By insolence comes nothing but strife,
    but with those who take advice is wisdom.

    ~Proverbs 13:10

    A fool’s mouth lashes out with pride,
    but the lips of the wise protect them.

    ~Proverbs 14:3 (NIV)

    Pride goes before destruction,
    and a haughty spirit before a fall.
    19 It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor
    than to divide the spoil with the proud.

    ~Proverbs 16:18-19

    Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord;
    be assured, he will not go unpunished.

    ~Proverbs 16:5
    But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the
    humble.”

    ~James 4:6

    The haughty looks of man shall be brought low,
    and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled,
    and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.
    12 For the Lord of hosts has a day
    against all that is proud and lofty,
    against all that is lifted up—and it shall be brought low;

    ~Isaiah 2:11-12

    The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom,
    and humility comes before honor.

    ~Proverbs 15:33

    One's pride will bring him low,
    but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.

    ~Proverbs 29:23
    The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other
    men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week;
    I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up
    his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell
    you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who
    exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

    ~Luke 18:11-14

    “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

    ~Matthew 5:3

    Outgrowing Dawkins: A Beginner's Guide – Theology for All

    Theology For All: A Conversation with David Wilkinson

    Richard Dawkins, the best-selling author of the God Delusion and one of the preeminent 'new atheist' philosophers, has recently written a new book entitled, "Outgrowing God: A Beginner's Guide". In this book, Dawkins challenges his readers to accept that we don't need God to explain how the world works and how it came to be.

    In this month's Theology for All, Revd Prof David Wilkinson, Principal of St. John's College and a professor of Theology & Religion at Durham University, will be presenting his response: "Outgrowing Dawkins: A Beginner's Guide". Wilkinson will discuss the interaction between Faith and Science, and how they might be more closely aligned than Dawkins could have imagined.
