Maria Kraus ist eine Besonderheit. Und ein Glücksfall für die Kulinarik. Die Liebe zu gutem Essen ist ihr im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes in die Wiege gelegt worden. Denn die Eltern betrieben einen klassischen Kolonialwarenladen und ihr Vater zeigte ihr, woran man erstklassige Lebensmittel erkennt. Von ihrer Mutter erbt sie die Liebe zu anderen Sprachen und Kulturen. Als Jugendliche reist sie zu Sprachaufenthalten nach England und Frankreich. In Kalifornien entdeckt sie nicht nur ihre Liebe zu Amerika, sondern auch zu amerikanischen Lebensmitteln. Hier lernt sie auch Freunde aus Lateinamerika kennen und entdeckt über den Jahrhundertroman „Hundert Jahre Einsamkeit“ von Gabriel García Márquez den wunderbaren Klang der spanischen Sprache.
Zurück in Deutschland verbindet sie ihre Leidenschaften: Lebensmittel und Sprache denkt sie fortan zusammen und startet PR-Kampagnen für Lebensmittel. Anfang der 2000er Jahre macht sie sich mit ihrer mk2 GmbH selbstständig. Erst durch ihre beherzte Arbeit wurden Cranberrys und Ahornsirup im europäischen Markt zu festen Größen.
