Episode 27; Dr. Kristin Edwards Discusses Signs and Ways to Cope with Anxiety in Children

This week the "Yucky Mommy" podcast has their first ever guest on! She is a licensed child psychologist who specializes in early childhood through young adulthood and offers anxiety treatment for children and families, while also offering psych evals and neuropsychological testing. This guest is also a dear friend of Jessica's and owns her own practice in Tampa Bay called Tampa Pediatric Psychology. Her business also consults with patients virtually throughout the area and even takes patients from out of state.

Dr. Kristin Edwards brings a boat load of knowledge to this weeks podcast episode and we are so thankful to have her on. She discusses anxiety in children and the signs and symptoms to look out for. She also gives parents advice and knowledge on how to deal with anxiety and mental health struggles in children. Dr. Kristin Edwards  talks about where anxiety can come from in children and when to know if it's more of a disorder rather than just a moment.

Can anxiety come from genetics? How much of anxiety comes from devices? Are having arguments in front of our kids and having these "big emotions" healthy for our children to see from us as parents? How much is too much when it comes to being an overbearing parent? Listen to find out the answer to those and more.

We also give Dr. Kristin Edwards scenarios and "Yucky Mommy" moments that she gives her opinion and advice on.

Episode 25; A Bone to Pick with Men, Controversial Topics and Yucky Mommy Moments

Episode 25; A Bone to Pick with Men, Controversial Topics and Yucky Mommy Moments

Holly asks Jessica her thoughts as someone in the sales/corporate world on the most recent cancelation of Corporate Natalie on social media. Holly also discusses her frustration with men in power and their inability to see the labor of motherhood. The "Yucky" mommies talk about what private parts are called in their households and if parents should shy away from telling the truth about things their kids can't fully comprehend yet, or if they should tell it like it is when the hard questions are asked. An unfortunate Fischer-Price accident has recently occurred (again). Jess and Holly discuss the accident and reflect on their own experiences with the Rock 'n Play when their babies were small and other tough situations they've been in with their kids when you look away for even just a split second. They also give you their Yucky Mommy moments of the week .

This is the mom podcast you didn’t know you needed in your life!
Have you ever felt completely alone in motherhood? Yeah. We’ve been there too. We wanted to have the mom friends that everyone else seems to have, but living in two different states and being moms to a total of 5 tiny humans (4 earth-side and 1 in heaven), life is BUSY. We knew we needed a way to connect with each other and share in our motherhood moments, but finding the time to do so between playing with our kids, working and making sure to fold that giant mountain of laundry that seems to always be there was harder than we imagined. So we decided to start a mom podcast for women in our same situation. A podcast gives us the opportunity to chat with our mom friends AND get that laundry mountain folded!

LIVE Q&A SERIES // How can we teach kids to make good choices? It's actually our super power tool...

LIVE Q&A SERIES // How can we teach kids to make good choices? It's actually our super power tool...

When mistakes are judged, shamed and connected to child’s worth + belonging (conditional teaching):

✔️Kids learn to feel shame when they naturally struggle
✔️Kids learn that conflict is binary: good/bad, right/wrong
✔️Kids hold in their feelings + needs out of fear of shame
✔️Kids are more likely to lie, blame, + defend to feel safe

When mistakes neutrally explored and NOT connected to child’s worth + belonging (unconditional teaching):

✨Kids learn to feel safe when they struggle and grow
✨Kids learn that conflict can be a safe place to learn
✨Kids learn their + others’ needs + feelings matter
✨Kids are more likely to communicate, empathize + innovate

Gah! We’re all trying to give ourselves grace, patience and love for all the “messing up” we’re doing as adults + parents. ✨Can we try to extend those same things to our kids as they learn and grow, too?

Rather than instinctually repeating the inherited phrasing that was passed down to us from generations before, we give you permission to lean into your kids’ learning moments with the very skills you hope to teach them: curiosity, empathy, humor + innovation — a concerted effort to focus on the NEEDS vs the BEHAVIORS.

    From Jen:

Parenting is hard. But when we replace conventional parent-child power dynamics with collaboration, family life gets easier today—and we create a better world for all of us in the future. When our children are stalling, resisting, tantrumming, using mean words, and hitting, we want to make it stop.  But discipline methods like time-outs, countdowns, and 'consequences' teach children that it's OK for more powerful people to control others.

Research-based parenting educator Jen Lumanlan offers a simple yet revolutionary framework for rethinking our relationships with children.  We can learn to look beneath challenging behaviors to find and meet children's needs, and ours too - perhaps for the first time in our lives.  This approach helps us to find solutions to conflicts that work for everyone - in our families, and in the wider world.

Hillsong Review- Not For Little Ears! | Episode 25

Hillsong Review- Not For Little Ears! | Episode 25

Today's the day... we're finally releasing the episode we've been talking about for weeks now! The original documentary of Hillsong reviewed and discussed by Bree and Rach. They discuss the allegations brought against those in leadership positions at churches and the university, finances, certain churches brought up, the interviewers and stories shared, the editing, and overall takeaways of the film.

Mamas- this episode is NOT for little ears. Rach and Bree will be discussing sexual abuse and scandals that is not appropriate for children to hear. Please listen with headphones or away from anyone you do not want to be exposed to this content. Also, for anyone who has sexual trauma or been impacted in some way by this type of trauma please take the steps to ensure this content will not negatively impact you and your healing journey.

    Hey, Cool Moms!

Welcome to your new favorite (if we weren't already) 2 hours every week!

The Cool Moms Podcast is your one stop for all things that help YOU stay the cool mom you are. From books and shows to current events, mom moments and conspiracy theories we give you all the know in one place. Think of us as your "news for moms" show. Best part- we do all this through a Christian lens so you're not having to edit the parts that don't apply, align, or you literally cannot listen in the car with your kiddos... that will never be the case with us!

We cover all things culture and politics- with a Christian twist- so you can mom it informed, encouraged and with a book or show rec to go with.. We got you, mama!

With so much constantly changing it's hard to keep up. So our motto- "how to stay current when the current's constantly changing" is not just about staying hip and cool (thats a plus!). It's about learning to navigate these waters of life arm in arm with other mamas sharing the kingdom mindset + mom desires as you- raising kind, good, loving humans while trying to stay sane and extending grace (lots of it!) when needed.

Most importantly- we always keep it real... from facedown moments to challenging one another with truth + scripture when it's the unpopular opinion (*cough* going against societal norms, *cough* Hi, I'm a conspiracy theorists, *cough* don't trust the lies you're being told), to little (and big) wins...
