    Ep. 211: Keep On Truckin'

It’s 2024 and your humble hosts have been persuaded by the good podcasting people to keep on truckin’. Therefore, we bring you an episode full of bands devoted to naming themselves after the almighty diesel guzzlin’, 600 horsepower pullin’, multi-axle haulin’ hell on wheels known as trucks! This episode is, obviously, brought to you by our resident gearhead: Mr. Robert Harrison.

New to InObscuria? It’s all about digging up obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we are digging and hauling by featuring bands whose names contain the word truck… I know, it’s a bit out there. Thanks, Robert! We hope that we turn you on to something new!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Truck - “Make Hay” from Exploring The Wah (2022)
    2. Truckfighters - “Hawkshaw” from (2016)
    3. Monster Truck - “Thundertruck” from True Rockers (2018)
    4. Bad Möthertrückers - “Crucified” from Crucified - Single (2019)
    5. Truckers - “Truckers” from Leave Me Alone (1995)
    6. Gruntruck - “It’s Alright” from Gruntruck (2017)
    7. Derek Trucks Band - “Alright” from Out Of The Madness (1998)

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E16

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E16

S6E16 went out live on Rebel Rock radio at 7 pm on 20 April 2023.  It was jam-packed with new stuff including Metallica, Overkill, Dave Hause, and Ian Hunter.  The highlight of the new releases was a track called ‘#Rebel’ from Extreme, Nuno Bettencourt is on fire on the tracks released so far. The album is to be called Six and there are 3 tracks out so far.  We also had a surprise release from the Foo Fighters.  The band is calling it a new beginning.  According to Rolling Stone; The album arrives “after a year of staggering losses, personal introspection, and bittersweet remembrances,” the album’s listing page notes. “A brutally honest and emotionally raw response to everything Foo Fighters have endured recently, But Here We Are is a testament to the healing powers of music, friendship, and family.”  Following on from the tragic death of Taylor Hawkins the Foos have regrouped and united through music.  No one is saying who drummed on the track, but it does sound like Dave to me. I still hope Rufus Taylor will get the gig.

The Ultimate Challenge was way more difficult than normal because 1976 was so strong.  We had 6 albums, Thin Lizzy – Jailbreak, Kiss - Destroyer, Judas Priest – Sad Wings of Destiny, Rainbow – Rising, Rush - 2112, and Boston – Boston.  What do you do when you are supposed to pick one out of four and you can't even pick four from six?  I played all 6 and broke my own rules.  The popular choice was Jailbreak, personally Sad Wings and Destroyer are very special to me.  The general view from the listeners was that 1976 was phenomenal and these 6 albums just prove it.

We had some TSORR oddities and called back the past with Madness and Adam and the Ants, both went down well.  The Immortals this week featured Creedance Clearwater Revival and their 7:39 Track ‘Keep on Chooglin’.  This track gets into your head, the Doctor says it normally takes a week to stop singing 'Keep On Chooglin' to yourself.

This was one of the most enjoyable shows in a long time, with good vibes on the airwaves and cool people to share it with, Ed’s dead baby, Ed’s dead, Long live Nuno.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E13

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E13

Season 5 Episode 13 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio on 31 Mar 2022.  We kicked off with some ACDC, the title track of their 2016 release Black Ice.  From arguably the biggest rock band in the world we took in 3 lesser-known outfits i.e. Left Lane Cruiser, Monster Truck, and Motor Sister before spending some time with a couple of '70s classics from Rush and Nazareth.  'Zeit', the new release from Rammstein, made its TSORR debut and it's a great track.  Zeit means time, so it was fitting to also take a listen to Pink Floyd's wonderful track 'Time' off dark Side of The Moon.

The sad passing of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins deserved some TSORR recognition.  We took a listen to Taylor with the Foo's in 'All My Life' then a track off his solo EP Kota.  The track is wonderfully titled' I've Got Some Not Being Around You To Do Today'.  Taylor was way more than just the drummer for the band he was a part of the creative whole, a unique multi-talented character who breathed energy and charisma into the band.  From there we took a listen to Dream Widow which is an album Dave Grohl put together as a soundtrack to the Foos 2022 movie Studio 666.  Apparently, Dave played drums, guitar, bass and did all the vocals but it's a bit unclear in the literature how much the rest of the band were involved.

We took a listen to Bollywood out of India and a track called 'Aaj' off their album Rakshak.  It made sense to follow it with 'Ratamahatta' off Roots.  Two other tracks that make sense together were Halestorm's 'Break-In' featuring Amy Lee and In This Moment with 'The Fighter'.  To restore balance and get the show out of slow, dark, emotional albeit excellent stuff we played out with an energetic couple of tracks from Kiss with 'Rocket Ride', The Distillers with 'Sick of It All' and My Chemical Romance closed the set with 'Welcome To The Black Parade'.

P.S. After over 4 years of hoping it was fantastic to announce and celebrate the return of The Gaslight Anthem.  They are doing a reunion tour and are expected to record a new album.  Happy days.

Artists featured:  ACDC, Left Lane Cruiser, Motor Sister, Monster Truck, The Screaming Jets, Rush, Nazareth, Quiet Riot, Rammstein, Motörhead, Sanctuary, The Stooges, Pink Floyd, Queensrÿche, Gary Moore, The Dead Daisies, Foo Fighters, Taylor Hawkins, Dream Widow, Coal Chamber, Bloodywood, Sepultura, The Clash, Gary Numan., Dead Kennedy’s, The Black Cat Bones, Jack Hammer, Dan Patlansky, L.A. Cobra, Kid Rock, Dino Jelusic with Mendoza, Halestorm feat Amy Lee, In This Moment, The Gas Light Anthem, Kiss, Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown,  The Distillers, My Chemical Romance

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E35

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E35

Episode 35 of Season 4 went out live at 7 pm on 2 September 2021.  The show featured a number of albums released in 2021 including one by a guy called Ayron Jones.  I am quite blown away by this album titled Child of the State.  He has a voice that reminds me of Prince in places, with shades of Terrence Trent D'Arby and Gary Clarke Jr.  He also plays a mean guitar, his track 'My Love Remains' should raise some goosebumps.  Mason Hill's album Against the Wall  is another new one I am enjoying. We took a listen to 'Broken Son'.

I am also going through a Samantha Fish phase so we heard from her and rounded out the blues with some Jonny Lang.  The heavy lifting was handled by Onslaught, Bullet For My Vallentine and, Sunken State.  The latest Rob Zombie was pretty cool and so was a track off Serj Tankian's latest EP called Elasticity, we took a listen to a track called 'Your Mom' which is proudly flying the System of a Down flag.  I had a little rant about the state of the government and the local municipality, as we have been without water for 24 hours, it felt appropriate to take a track off Give 'Em Enough Rope' by The Clash and 'Fire & Gasoline' by Steve Jones.  The music and lyrics punctuated a number of disparaging remarks about the state of things in general.  They were unplanned but heartfelt.

The South African stuff came from Valiant Swart, The Burning, The Uninvited, and Sunken Stae as well as newcomers Imagine&Nation who have released an excellent EP titled  Never Be Quiet which could be a mantra for TSORR.

Artists featured:  Herman Frank, Monster Truck, Seasick Steve, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, The Sweet, Mötley Crüe, Steelheart, Vain, Onslaught, Q5, Queensrÿche, Running Wild, Wolfmother, Grandfunk Railroad, Ayron Jones, Mick Jagger, Serj Tankian, Mason Hill, Samatha Fish, Jonny Lang, Imagine&Nation, Valiant Swart, The Burning, Bullet For My Vallentine, Massive Wagons, Mammoth WVH, Rose Tattoo, The Clash, Steve Jones, Accept, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motörhead, Windowpane, Mr Big, The Uninvited, Sunken State.

    Jon 'Marv' Harvey

Monster Truck hail the blue collar city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.... oh, and they also happen to be one of Slash's favorite bands!

This weeks guest is none other than Jon "Marv" Harvey, singer and bass player for the kick ass band Monster Truck. In 2013, the band won the Juno Award (that's pretty much a Canadian Grammy) for 'Breakthrough Group of the Year', and they've had SIX 'Top 10' Singles on the Canadian Rock Charts.

Jon is open and honest about his sobriety... the bands new music... what it's like touring the world... and the future of the band. Oh, and don't forget: "Don't F*ck With The Truck!".... eh!

The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 39

The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 39

Episode 39 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show aired at midnight on 11  October 2019.  It marks a change in the way the show is recorded in that the songs are submitted upfront.  This means any changes to the playlist on the night are impossible unless by some miracle the song is in the stations' data base.  It makes requests tricky.  Requests don’t form a huge part of TSORR Radio Show however listeners often submit excellent ideas that add a good energy to the show.  The new method for requests is to find the track on YouTube which is a lottery, you never know what the quality will be like or how many surprises are in a track you haven’t reviewed.  The first taste of this method is about two-thirds of the way through, and it was certainly a strange one that cut and shifted and had phones ringing in it.  I left it as-is for the purity of the show.  It going to be better in future if I know what the track is like upfront.

Everything else was 100% fun, pretty much what you’d expect from this show.  The new stuff came from Hell Fire, Black Star Riders, Backyard Babies and Tom Keifer.  I don’t think we went back further than 1982 this week, I ran out of time and the Rory Gallagher from 1974 got bumped.  In fact, The Damned of all bands represented the 70’s.  Local music was covered by Crash Car Burn and Johnathan Martin, the weeks outlier was Alabama 3 with Too Sick to Pray.  It was the most appreciated track of the night according to the WhatsApp line.

Artists featured this week included Dio, ACDC, Rainbow, Monster Truck, David Lee Roth, The Damned, Tom Petty, Rammstein, Sammy Hagar, David Bowie, Judas Priest, Black Star Riders, Joan Jett, Damn Yankees, Hell Fire, Amon Amarth, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Sixx:A.M., Alabama 3, Johnathan Martin, Megadeth, Crash Car Burn, Tom Keifer, Backyard Babies & Buckcherry with Papa Roach.
