    Encore Ain't Necessarily So

    Encore Ain't Necessarily So
What we have heard and we’ve read in the Bible, well it ain’t necessarily so. So goes the old Porgy and Bess song. Perhaps they did not read Thomas Moore’s version, Gospel The Book of John, in which regardless of religion or atheism one discovers a deeper more meaningful spirituality hidden in the root meanings of the words used. Unfortunately, much of the work of John and others has been turned into moralistic dogma. But what we find in the root language is a more celebrative, deeply mystical and loving message. In Moore’s book we discover a different Jesus than the one described for us by earlier translations. This new rendition of Jesus is Dionysian in his urging us toward a full and meaningful celebration of living. He tells us that we are to remember who we are, and he guides us to that knowledge with his actions and words. Come learn of this new Jesus. See if you like him now.

    Episode 38: Davey Leavitt

    Episode 38: Davey Leavitt

Davey Leavitt is an artist and designer and the former co-founder of Cyrcle. He lives and works in Los Angeles. We talk about low-key chic living in Los Feliz, the apprehension for learning new things, Kung Fu George popping up at the right time, joining a lesbian basketball league, becoming conscious, every artist dealing with trauma, living with depression, vanilla granola, mustard seeds of faith, healing from pain and becoming of service, the benefits of Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy, anger as assertiveness, dogs becoming family members, getting inspiration from his wife Mel, entering his neutral period, double drop shadows, starting over, painters not having a distribution model for their work as opposed to musicians or other creatives, starting off in streetwear in Oakland, moving to LA to art direct for FiveFour, the euphoric feeling of getting samples back, the 614 story, the difficulty of creative partnerships, how Cyrcle ended, needing a W, the President of the Douche Club, leaning towards design, artists that don’t know they’re artists, and how the sweet is never as sweet without the sour.

#109: Dr. Marks' Heroin Clinics, Cocaine Cigarettes & Redefining Drugs (Toby Seddon)

From 1985-1992, Dr. John Marks managed a clinic where addicted people in parts of England could go to get prescription heroin, cocaine and amphetamine. And just like those who did so before him, and those who came after, he noted improvements in his patients' quality of life and a reduction in their use (and purchase) of street drugs. But in 1992, he was run off by the government when his work gained too much attention, in part by appearing on 60 Minutes and sharing footage of cigarettes spiked with cocaine and heroin being picked up by users from local pharmacies.

Today I am joined by Toby Seddon, who has a podcast of his own in England which you can check out at TobySeddon.com . His research covers various areas of drug policy, but we talk about a few specific articles which you can find below. We discuss the genealogy of drug policy, Michel Foucault's work regarding power and human nature, the changing landscape of pharmacology, capitalism, moralistic arguments against drug use, Dr. Marks's drug clinics, treatment versus sustainment, and lots more.

Read Toby's piece on the genealogy of "drug policy."
Read Toby's coauthored metanalysis (an analysis of numerous studies) about opioid use and criminality
You can also read about marijuana and autism in this 2022 article.

    Only The Lowly Know

    Only The Lowly Know

There's always more than meets the eye in Scripture. Reimagine the story of Jesus turning water to wine with us. What if this wasn't a miracle to prove Jesus could do miracles? What it John included this story to proclaim something much more scandalous than just that Jesus can do miracles? What if the empty jars for purification that Jesus filled with wine are a sign of the impotence of religion?

The Pimps and the Prostitutes Are Closer to Heaven Than We Are

The Pimps and the Prostitutes Are Closer to Heaven Than We Are

We don't let Jesus offend us enough. When he says things like, "The pimps and prostitutes are closer to heaven than you are," we should be shocked. But mostly we just miss his point, or don't even think about it.

But Emmanuel Kant WAS offended, so much so that he completely, 100%, rejected the Gospel of God in favor of the gospel of self-deceit.

Why Can't We Admit the Evil Within?

The world tells us to cling to something inside us for significance; God says there is a better way.
