Romans: Offer Your Life to God [Romans: 02]

Romans: Offer Your Life to God [Romans: 02]

    Romans 6:11-14 // Tom Nelson

One of the greatest battles of history is not “out there,” but rather, is “in here.” Herein lies a crucial insight as to why following Jesus can be so hard. There is a battle being waged not just with our bodies but in our bodies. In Christ we now live and breathe in a new realm, not of mere religious obligation or moral conformity, but to the realm of grace which is an intimate relationship with God. Being under grace means we are now part of Jesus’ new kingdom.

The Magic of Monaco - with Anthony Osmond-Evans

The Magic of Monaco - with Anthony Osmond-Evans

    A very special show indeed!!

Anthony has travelled the world as a writer / photographer / publisher. He is best known for his stunning coffee table books, including China the Beautiful.

Anthony's books document the history and aesthetic of locations around the world, using his own writing and photography.

Anthony has had several explorations to remote areas, always with an eye to a good photograph. During his time in the Himalayas, Anthomy went to Everest base camp at 17,000 feet and subsequently explored both Tibet and Bhutan.

Anthony also once visited Mother Teresa in Calcutta, by appointment. Anthony was deeply moved by her work and her genuine sincerity. And as Anthony states, 'It is not often that one is in the presence of a saint. She was petite and hardly came up to my hip. We sat in the sun on the balcony of her sparse, but immaculately clean, room. For some 45 minutes she held my hand between her own two tiny hands and talked to me about the benefits of charity so that she could continue her good works.

Mother Teresa allowed Anthony to take a photograph of her.

Whilst in Southern China, Anthony woke early one morning to find the villagers assembling in the playground near the hotel and in front of them lined up ten prisoners who were to be shot for murder, with placards around their necks denoting their crimes. The families of the prisoners were sent a bill to pay for the cost of the bullet. 10,000 such people were executed in China that year. Anthony's photo ‘Mort du Matin' came out all over the world in Paris Match.

Not forgetting a wonderful little story in Monaco with Anthony's great friend Shirley Bassey when they sung 'My Way' together, yes the title of my first book My Way - The Autobiography.

Just a few senational stories we will be talking about on the show, plus a lot more too.

You lucky folk... You get it all on The World of Lord Russell PodCast Talk Show.

Such an exciting show next week and as always, I'm looking forward to seeing you all on the inside.

Christianity as a Way of Life: Practice & Belief / Kevin Hector

Christianity as a Way of Life: Practice & Belief / Kevin Hector

What would it mean for us to take Christianity seriously as a way of life, a set of practices and ways of being in the world—and not merely a list of beliefs?

Theologian Kevin Hector (University of Chicago Divinity School) joins Ryan McAnnally-Linz for a discussion of his latest book, Christianity as a Way of Life. Together they reflect on the practice of Christianity; the role of devotion to God in framing the importance of Christianity to a practitioner; the unique practices embedded in the life of Christians; the plausibility of Christianity today; what it means to see Jesus in people and look for the image of God in others; the practices of imitation and forgiveness; the conflicted character of Christian experience; loving God as loving what God loves; the significance of shame; and what it means to renarrate your life in light of the Gospel.

    About Kevin Hector

Kevin Hector is the Naomi Shenstone Donnelley Professor of Theology and of the Philosophy of Religions; also in the College. His teaching and research are devoted largely to interpretive questions, particularly (a) how best to understand faith commitments, and (b) how the outworking of such commitments can shed light on broader cultural issues. Hector's first book, *Theology without Metaphysics*  (Cambridge University Press, 2011), thus defends a novel approach to the problem of metaphysics by developing a philosophically-informed and critically-articulated theology of language. In his second book, The Theological Project of Modernism: Faith and the Conditions of Mineness (Oxford University Press, 2015), Hector explores the idea of 'mineness,' in the sense of being able to identify with one's life or experience it as self-expressive, by tracing the development of this idea in modern theology. His third book, Christianity as a Way of Life: A Systematic Theology (Yale University Press, 2023) argues that we can understand Christianity as a set of practices designed to transform one’s way of perceiving and being in the world or, in sum, as a way of life. And in his forthcoming book-project, tentatively entitled “Life as a Theological Project: Creating a Usable Past,” Hector focuses on memoirs as a site of theological reflection, not least because memoirs shed light on issues that people wrestle with more generally.

    Guide to Mother Teresa

    Guide to Mother Teresa

Mother Theresa was a Catholic nun and founder of “missionaries of charity” an order of nuns tasked with caring for those refused by all others. Those with HIV, Tuberculosis, and  Leprosy. She encouraged us to “find our own Calcutta” and do what we can to alleviate suffering of the people most in need, but there is of course more to the story…join Dave and Greg as they discuss both the accolades and criticisms of the world’s most accomplished nun.

Episode 42 - You Are Going to Die

What does it mean to die? Is there nothingness, do we cease to exist? Or maybe we are all bound for paradise (except maybe that one guy).

Everyone will die, that is something we all have in common. But death is not the end. For some of us this life is only a vapor and there is so much more to look forward to.

Peace Through Surrender: Nita Hanson's Story Serving In Ukraine, Part 1

Peace Through Surrender: Nita Hanson's Story Serving In Ukraine, Part 1

The religion of Christianity can feel empty.

God intended it to be abundant.

Life can feel empty. Simply going from one job to another or one relationship to another may have moments of fulfillment but many long for a greater sense of purpose and meaningful adventure.

God's desire is for your life to have meaning and to be a positive influence in the world.

Nita Hanson has served for over 26 years in Ukraine.   Some have called her the "Mother Teresa" of Ukraine.   From a simple beginning of holding babies to helping to care for people in this war-torn country, she has brought peace and hope to the poorest of the poor.

In this podcast you'll discover how to experience peace through surrender following Jesus' example of surrender.   Her life strategy is simple - God says to do something and she does it.

Nita's story brings hope to the hopeless.   A heart that listens to God will be led to those in deepest need to offer and discover peace in all circumstances.

HOST JACKIE TANTILLO - Four Strong Women's Lifetime Commitment To Making The Invisible More Visible With Guest Author And Translator Kathryn Spink

HOST JACKIE TANTILLO - Four Strong Women's Lifetime Commitment To Making The Invisible More Visible With Guest Author And Translator Kathryn Spink

Kathryn was born in the Himalayas. However, both her parents were English and had the same desire of "going out to India, spreading the Gospel message and serving the poor," explains my guest.

Living in Vienna as a young girl, Kathryn remembers her parents taking in refugees who were seeking political asylum and it was normal to have refugees sleeping on their floor regularly. These memories had a profound effect on Kathryn and she was certain that this is how her interests in helping the less fortunate  came to be.

Kathryn shares that her mother was not warm and fuzzy but she was from the generation of tough and strong women. Kathryn always felt very loved. Ruby was a teacher and taught her daughter and other children from the Embassy. Ruby was determined that Kathryn would not be spoiled. Kathryn was soon sent to boarding school because her parents were working and traveling regularly.

"A little pencil in God's hand" is how Mother Teresa would refer to herself. She never wanted credit  or accolades for her work. "She could be a tough cookie," Spink reflects however, "she was difficult to deal with sometimes, because God was so definitely on her side and that could make things tough. Mother Teresa was so determined, nothing could get in her way."

"Poverty saddened Mother Teresa the most according to Kathryn,  "I don't think it angered her not in relation to God. Waste most likely angered her the most but never with God."

Mother Teresa was always seeing the presence of God in the poor and it helped her persevere.  "Tolerance was deeply ingrained in Mother Theresa" explains Ms. Spink. "Mother Teresa believed that God was at work in every soul, so it wasn't up to her to try and convince others of the 'correct/best religion."

My guest remarks "Mother Teresa used to say "come to Calcutta and I'll put you to work".  This is what this demure but mighty  woman believed with her whole body, mind and spirit.

Kathryn even shared stories of the similarities between Mother Teresa, whose birth name was Agnes, and her mother Drana. "The family that prays together, stays together" was one of Drana's favorite expressions according to Spink. Caring for the sick was a common thread for the two woman.

"It's not always about the physical suffering, but the whole process of being abandoned by people" was one of the toughest things for Mother Teresa to comes to terms with, comments Spink.

Mother Teresa founded the order, "The Missionaries of Charities." She wanted to give shelter to  abandoned babies and to help the poorest of the poor. In 1979 she received the Nobel Peace Prize and after her death was canonized as Saint Teresa.

I could have listened for hours to my guest share her stories of all of these selfless women.

Mother Teresa was known as 'Mother' because when a nun/sister is appointed to a superior position within  the church, they are known as 'Mother.'

"Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers and the roles they play in our lives. And my guests answer the question, 'are you who you are today because of, or in spite of, your mother'? You'll be amazed at what the responses are.

"Should Have Listened To My Mother" would not be possible without the generosity, sincerity and insight from my guests. In getting ready to launch my podcast, so many were willing to give their time and share their personal relationships with their mother.

Some of my guests include Baritone Singer Christopheren Nomura, Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist Tim Wacker, Activist Kim Miller, Freighter Sea Captain Terry Viscount, Film Production Manager Peg Robinson, Professor of Writing Montclair State University Dr. Bridget Brown, Tammy Steckler, attorney and family advocate @CUNY Law; NYC First Responder/NYC Firefighter Mark Heingartner, Child and Adult Special Needs Activist, Maryellen Valyo Cole and Roger Evens, Property Manager in New Jersey and so many more talented and insightful women and men.

Faith, Family, and Forgiveness with Peter and Debbie Herbeck and Matt Lozano

Faith, Family, and Forgiveness with Peter and Debbie Herbeck and Matt Lozano

Do you long to grow in loving those around you yet sometimes find it a challenge in the day to day?

In this episode, Matt sat down with the wonderful, godly couple, Peter and Debbie Herbeck to discuss the Herbeck’s new book Lessons from the School of Love coming in January 2023.

Enjoy their insightful and often humorous stories of facing life's challenges and knowing God’s faithfulness. Though Peter and Debbie come from wildly different worlds, their marriage is founded on their mutual transformation by Jesus Christ. This beautiful conversation centers on  faith, family, forgiveness, and love as they share life stories with Matt.

Peter Herbeck is the Executive Vice President and Director of Missions for Renewal Ministries. For more than thirty years, he has been actively involved in evangelization and Catholic renewal throughout the US, Canada, Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe. Debbie has worked extensively in youth and women’s ministry and has spoken at Franciscan University Conferences, Legatus chapters, and women’s events throughout the world. She is the founder and executive director of Pine Hills Girls Camp and the founder and director of the Be Love Revolution. When they are not writing books or traveling the world, they enjoy loving and celebrating life with their four children and nine grandchildren.

The Herbeck family motto is: “We make our aim to please the Lord”. Empowered through their marital vows and mutual commitment to Jesus, Peter and Debbie set a strong precedent for their children growing up in serving the Lord through all that they did and do.

The Herbecks share how Family is the school of love. Referring to the 2nd Key of Unbound, FORGIVENESS, Peter tells how families need to lavish forgiveness on each other and be in each other’s corner.

They take a deep dive into some practicals for responding to the call to parenthood. One snippet of their advice: have a weekly parent meeting where you talk about all the practical and important issues as well as seek the Lord together for decisions and prayer for your children. Listen for more!

Peter and Debbie share candidly about the many challenges they faced as parents and invite others to impact eternity by responding to this profound call.

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time: Father Swamy

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time: Father Swamy

(November 5, 2022) We have privilege today to welcome Father Anthony Swamy, who served in our parish for several years. Father Swamy is now in India and serves the Church and the poorest of the poor through his work in the Order of Missionaries of Saint Francis de Sales. Father is quick to joke but also serious and compassionate when describing the charitable work he and his brethren do in India.

Grounded in Love [Reconstructing Faith 06]

Grounded in Love [Reconstructing Faith 06]

Paul describes the local church as a holy temple, a dwelling place for the Triune God by (in) the Spirit. If we are followers of Christ our very individual bodies and collectively as the body of Christ, are a people, a place where God’s presence dwells. The Holy Spirit is the one who somehow brings that reality into time and space. God’s divine presence and supernatural power of Trinitarian love is experienced in time and space, both individually and collectively. To in joyful submission, heartfelt obedience, and contagious hope allow our embodied lives to be increasingly empowered and controlled by the Holy Spirit. To be spirit-filled individual apprentices of Jesus, to be a spirit-filled local church where the fruits of the spirit are manifested in our relationships and experienced in our relationships. The fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The local church is not only a prayerful community, it is also a supernatural community, created, empowered, and sustained by the Holy Spirit.
