(May 14, 2023) In his homily this Sunday, Father Charles L Persing focused on the essence of Christian, sacrificial love and the following of God’s commandments. “Jesus teaches us that our life is about loving … about sharing Christ’s love, which is beyond all understanding,” Father Persing said.

This episode is different because I didn’t wanna bash or unload my trauma as a momma and drama from my “momma.” Instead I will tell you how I learned bout birds and the bees while pregnant. Mini Me said the darnest things. I closed out with a poem of sorts to encourage and show love on Momma’s Day.

The conversation that resulted with the Jewish-Buddhist teacher and psychotherapist Sylvia Boorstein has been a companion to her and to many from that day forward. Here it is again as an offering for Mother’s Day — in a world still and again in flux, and where the matter of raising new human beings feels as complicated as ever before. Sylvia gifts us this teaching: that nurturing children’s inner lives can be woven into the fabric of our days — and that nurturing ourselves is also good for the children and everyone else in our lives.

Sylvia Boorstein is a mother, grandmother, Jewish-Buddhist teacher, psychotherapist, and a founding teacher of Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, California. Her books include That’s Funny, You Don’t Look Buddhist, It’s Easier Than You Think, Happiness Is an Inside Job, and Making Friends with the Present Moment.
