Jonathan Merritt on Personal Transformation and the Complicated Intersection of Faith and Culture

Today, Debbie speaks to Jonathan Merritt, one of America’s most renowned writers on faith and culture.

Debbie met Jonathan in the hot tub in Baja Mexico, but don’t get the wrong idea.

They were both in Baja to attend a weeklong workshop organized by Modern Elder Academy. And as you’ll hear in this episode, "change and transformation" were very much on the agenda.

You may have heard her talk about MEA. It’s billed as a midlife wisdom school whose core mission is to shift our negative mindset about aging. MEA is also a little bit of paradise. The campus, bursting with pink bougainvillea, sits on a wide, surf-pounded beach near Todos Santos, MX, just north of Cabo.

Debbie and Jonathan were part of a group of about 20 in a recent workshop, pondering how to use sensory experience in the here and now to map out their futures. Debbie was intrigued with Jonathan’s thoughtful comments. She was also drawn to his Atlanta accent which she couldn’t quite place at first but which she recognized. She has a bunch of Georgia cousins.

In the hot tub, Jonathan revealed a bit about why he had flown from New York to spend a week at MEA. She wanted to find out more so she invited him onto the show. And she wanted him to explain things to her, a non church-person.

Jonathan is best known as a writer on the complicated intersection of faith and culture — as it applies to LGBTQ intolerance and evangelicalism  — and much more.

The son of an evangelical leader and a former pastor himself, Jonathan was outed as gay a decade ago. He moved to New York City and has since become an award-winning contributor to The Atlantic, a senior columnist for Religion News Service; has authored several books (including the critically-acclaimed How to Speak God From Scratch); has been interviewed on ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, NPR and PBS; is a literary agent; has ghostwritten or collaborated on more than 50 books (with several titles landing on the NYTimes, USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists); speaks and teaches at colleges, conferences and churches; has just finished writing his first children’s book; and is writing a TV series about religion and popular culture.

Oh, and he just turned 40.

Despite — or perhaps because of — his achievements, Jonathan is working on a transformation, his own “what’s next.” He’s an old soul, he tells Debbie, so he’s approaching this with intentionality; his week at MEA was just one step.

On the podcast they talk about:

    • The urge to embrace spirituality (and religion) as you get older.
    • Why Sunday service at Yale’s Battell Chapel felt like a safe place for Debbie to weep after her mother died recently — even though she is not a church-person.
    • The definition of evangelicalism.
    • The connection between evangelicalism and fundamentalism and far right conservative ideologies.
    • The Rev. Tim Keller and his untimely death in May 2023 at age 72 (in his obituary, the NYT dubbed him Manhattan’s Pioneering Evangelist).
    • Jonathan’s personal story of being outed as gay  just days before his 30th birthday, and then moving from Atlanta to NYC to start a new life.
    • Appreciative inquiry and the art of asking ourselves the right questions.
    • Jonathan’s adaptation of The Ignation Examen as part of his daily intentional practice.
    • And, despite his notable success as a journalist, speaker, literary agent, ghostwriter, creative and more, why he’s feeling the need to transform himself at age 40.

As Debbie tells Jonathan, she could listen to him explain things all day — especially as they relate to religion, church, community, identity, intolerance and more. And yes, it's okay to go to church, he told her. Even if you don't believe in God, per se. She loved this conversation and hopes you will too.

Transitions and Newcomers to NYC with Kelly Kreth (Brick Underground)

Transitions and Newcomers to NYC with Kelly Kreth (Brick Underground)

It's the finale episode of season 4 and we're talking Transition and Newcomers to NYC...

It has been particularly challenging the last two years for those moving in, out, or around the city and will continue to be so going into 2022.

Episode 48 brings you writer, real estate publicist, and expert, Kelly Kreth to share her wild NYC story and talk more about her role at Brick Underground, which is a one-stop online resource on all things real estate as well as an informative guide on living in the city and also a platform for sharing real New Yorkers living situations.

In our interview Kelly will dive into two big narratives that have defined NYC’s ever revolving housing door the last two years. She’ll note how newcomers to the city are happy to be part of the city’s “rebirth” after the ‘New York is Dead’ conundrum that has plagued the city and caused an uproar amongst many. She’ll also dive into what New Yorkers have transitioned into the most during the pandemic, as well as, where one can get the biggest bang for their buck in the city, and also share some crazy living stories that may make one think twice about moving here.

Kelly is the first guest interview ever where someone had absolutely no negative feedback about NYC. Her positive reinforcement comes through as she states that, “no matter how long you’ve lived in New York…you’ll always still feel honored just to be here.”

Enjoy the interview with Kelly Kreth and be sure to check out all the links at the bottom of the show notes here. You can catch Kelly’s email and share your New York living story with her & Brick Underground.

It has been my absolute pleasure serving my listeners, supporters and New York City with another year and season, and I’m very much looking forward to BIG things for the podcast and NYC in 2022.

From New York with Love with ZIGS (Part 1 of 2)

From New York with Love with ZIGS (Part 1 of 2)

It's the two-year anniversary of the Gossipnista podcast today and there is no better way to celebrate then with my special guest today and her amazing music about New York City....

I still can’t believe I had the opportunity to interview such a talented up-and-coming musician and artist such as Erica Zigon. And yes, she’s definitely from New York, but you’ll have to tune in to find out where…

Her authenticity and talent is so raw with so many colors and stories to share throughout our interview, I am nearly left speechless.

You can expect a two episode installment with Zigs, today’s and the next one dropping on 11/22, which actually lines up perfectly with the two year celebration of the Gossipnista podcast today.

With major inspiration from her brother, who she’s always seen as a rockstar, and who helped to shape the musician she is today, she goes deeper into this bond, as well as her admiration for pop charts sensation Jon Bellion, and many other topics including New York City.

This is just the beginning for Zigs and I absolutely love the motto she’s adopted, “I try not to focus on getting bigger…just getting better.”

Amen to that and the new Manhattan/New York song she has created for the city!

SPOTTED: European Vacation from NYC (Part 1 of 4)

There’s a plot twist to this Spotted episode in more ways than one, but if you ever have plans to travel internationally, it’s of absolute value and a must listen.

Tune-in to hear a native New Yorker, turn recent Londoner, as we talk what we love and dislike about London and Paris. We also dive into the one tool that has saved my guest a lot of money while traveling abroad and that I wish I had on-hand while traveling.

You may or may not be familiar with this guest on today’s episode, as he’s been on the podcast before. And, I’ll also note, he was one of my very first if not the first New York friend!

Enjoy the episode and stay tuned for more to come on my European vacation.

Between the Lines of NYC with Uli Beutter Cohen (Subway Book Review)

She’s the queen of the underground, and is giving back to the city and New Yorkers through sharing their stories one book at a time.

Uli Beutter Cohen is a New York City–based documentarian, artist, and the creator of Subway Book Review.

For 7+ years and counting, Uli has ridden every subway line through New York City to observe, interview, and photograph some of its most imaginative people: the readers of books. Encapsulating what type of books define the minds of New Yorkers, she has now written her very first book, Between the Lines: Stories from the Underground—a collection of conversations that beautifully illuminate who we are and where we are going. Uli has spoken to over 1,000 people in her journey and shares some of her favorite encounters with everyday people and icons alike, including Jamel Shabazz, Lynn Yaeger, New York Nico, Devon Rodriguez, and many others.

In our interview we not only talk Between the Lines, of course, but dive deep into what Uli believes is the defining make up of a contributing New Yorker who not only takes what the city gives, but also gives back; how to make it in the city and find oneself; as well as the ups and downs that led to her success, and the outrageous things people have said to her. She’ll share the magic of New York City neighborhoods and how building a community is essential in the city.

Her fun, magnetic, and relatable journey will leave you hanging on every last word.

NYC Real Estate is Back with Starr Densford and Jordan White (The Rosen Team)

NYC Real Estate is Back with Starr Densford and Jordan White (The Rosen Team)

Broadway is back and so is the New York City real estate market.

According to major online publications, “The first half of 2021 experienced a record-breaking number of residential contracts signed.” And…it has not stopped since! Word on the street is that the rental market is just as busy with lines to see apartments and bidding wars driving up costs.

At the beginning of the pandemic, it looked as if New York City would potentially be making a major shift in the housing market, as many left the city in search for more space. This would ultimately shift the NYC housing market, creating a drop in demand and contribute to an overall decrease in housing prices across NY. This major shift would allow for more artists, creatives, and young people to filter in at more reasonable entry costs. However, that no longer seems the case as the shift back to the city greatly increased, but not to worry as there’s always opportunities somewhere here in the city.

My two guests today, Real Estate experts from The Rosen Team, Starr Densford and Jordan White, share what they’ve seen in the market this year and where it’s going. It’s a very insightful interview on the lay of the land on the NYC real estate market and beyond. Topics such as, where to buy, top neighborhoods, average price point in Manhattan, and differences between co-ops, condos, and townhomes, etc. Plus their unique stories as well as how some are destined to know their career path early on, although, it’s never too late to pivot to a 2nd or 3rd career change and thrive.

The Rosen Team understands the essential need to change with the always-shifting tide of the market. It was so much fun talking to Starr and Jordan. If you have any real estate questions please be sure to reach out to them.

Hip Hop in New York with DJ J-Ronin

Hip Hop in New York with DJ J-Ronin

In honor of his birthday and it also falling on the same day as #NationalNewYorkDay (Sept. 21st) - I did everything in my power to drop Brooklynite, DJ J-Ronin’s episode today!

Tastemaker in hip hop, business man, and best damn networker in New York City are words I would use to describe Jonathon Marvin a.k.a DJ J-Ronin (@jronin82).

Hip hop and martial arts were in his bones long before Wu-Tang made it popular, respectfully. But, when Wu-Tang changed the Hip Hop community in the East Coast and around the world with their one of a kind beats, lyrics, and uniquely skilled members - DJ Ronin became a part of it. He was signed as a DJ for them and also Wu-Tang radio - (C.R.E.A.M)!

In case you don’t know who Wu-Tang is, I highly recommend the Hulu original series @wutangonhulu. During this interview,  there will be a lot of O.G. name drops from the underground and mainstream hip hop community.

Hear DJ J-Ronin’s unique NYC story, from a Caribbean filled community in Flatbush, to his passion behind hip hop and martial arts and why he thinks “everyone should be punched in the face at least once”, as a reality check. He also gives advice on being aware of your surroundings in NYC, as well as being humbled and part of the community while respecting its roots and culture as key advice for newcomers.

    Additionally…

“Your network is your net worth.”

So get out there and know…

“People can feel your spirit, they can feel who you are and what you’re about.”

This, along with many other reasons are why doors have opened for Jonathan Marvin and why I’m glad to have met him on one unexpected subway ride, when first moving to New York City.

Who said…”New Yorkers are not friendly”!

Tune in to hear all this and some of his music as well as his picks on songs that define hip hop in New York and so much more.

Original Gossip Girl with Nicole Fiscella

Original Gossip Girl with Nicole Fiscella

Nostalgia, it’s like it never left for Gossip Girl. I mean, New York’s mayor at the time, Bloomberg, even gave the show its own day in the city - January 26th.

Tune into this week's episode as I bring you back to familiar people, music, and an interview with model, actress, and now mom, plus wellness guru, Nicole Fiscella, behind the original hit series Gossip Girl.

It was an era that over-popularized the upper echelon kids of the #UES and sensationalized the glitz and glamor of New York City to many, which is maybe why many of us loved it.

Alum Nicole, who was also known as Isabel Coates on #GossipGirl was #teamblairwaldorf all the way on the show, and so it’s no surprise her and Leighton Meester are real life bffs. But, Nicole’s journey in New York City leading up to getting booked for the show wasn’t always so glamorous as she too hit the pavement in the city (like many of us) to work towards her career in the industry. She lived all over Manhattan, and one thing is for sure, she can officially call herself a New Yorker having lived in the city for 10+ years. Yes, she even lived on the infamous #UpperEastSide, which her show made so popular indefinitely. Oh, and you won’t believe the chance encounter with Tyson Beckford she shared with me that may have catapulted her career as a model in the city. There’s also a mic drop moment when she shares the favorite pastime of the #GossipGirl cast in New York City.

The Bowery Boys (NYC History) with Greg Young

The Bowery Boys (NYC History) with Greg Young

Podcasting is a labor of love and The Bowery Boys define it!

Reinventing the way we consume history about New York City is what The Bowery Boys podcast has been doing since the 2000’s. The podcast is a New York City staple along with their hosts and creators Greg Young & Tom Meyers.

On today’s episode and long holiday weekend, it’s only appropriate that I have Greg Young (@boweryboysnyc) to share his New York City story, insights on the city’s history, and how The Bowery Boys got their beginnings.

Today, The Bowery Boys, are a media empire, which not only includes the podcast, but live shows, NYC tours, a book, and endless content about New York City’s history with so much more on the horizon.

After countless media publications and interviews, I’m grateful to have had a chance to speak with Greg Young and have him share more about The Bowery Boys as well as how Lower Manhattan and September 11th may have had a big role in inspiring the Bowery Boys creation. He also breaks down the top episodes to start with, if you're new to The Bowery Boys podcast, (as there are nearly 400), amongst his favorites. And of course, never before heard tips on navigating the city as well as some that may already sound familiar, but that are reoccurring amongst my guests and key to navigating the city.

Some of the biggest takeaways include New York is not a passive city; there’s always a new discovery in New York to explore or by viewing it in a different way; and that New York sometimes takes you on its own course of where your life and path should go…so be open!

Shoutout to Tom Meyers, the other half of The Bowery Boys, who is on double baby duty having adopted a precious little girl during the pandemic.

Enjoy my interview with Greg Young.

Watching New York Street Style with Johnny Cirillo

Watching New York Street Style with Johnny Cirillo

You can be you or be whomever you want to be in New York City.

New York lends itself as one of the most magnificent backdrops in this world, while also being a place where ones expression can be truly embraced without judgement. My guest this week on the podcast is Johnny Cirillo, 'Watching New York'. He captures not only the beauty of the city, but it’s beautiful inhabitants through street style photography in the most natural, candid, yet polarizing ways possible.

His page is what REAL New York fashion dreams are made of in my opinion as well as Vogue magazine, which he was featured in recently.

By bringing a very realistic viewpoint on fashion in the city - Johnny, showcases New Yorkers who piece their outfit’s together creatively in various ways as he aims to share the essence of the city and its people in their natural state. Rarely, does that involve high fashion runway looks, but rather the raw and eclectic diversity of New Yorkers style season after season.

In our interview Johnny reveals so much insight into his life and love for New York City, along with more about his account ‘Watching New York,’ and the creation of it. Also, his hopes and plans on where he sees the future of the account and his work going (THINK BIG). And, ultimately what he looks for in the people he shoots and where he captures his street style.

I will say I was surprised to hear the one key ingredient Johnny looks for in his subjects….and it’s not always the best style. Can you guess what he looks for?

You could end up next on Watching New York's account with all the amazing insights from Johnny.

Head on over to his account to see firsthand more amazing street style at @watchingnewyork and be sure to follow!

Enjoy the interview and style tips.

New York's Buddy the Rat with Jonothon Lyons

New York's Buddy the Rat with Jonothon Lyons

It’s a rat-race in the city and my guest today has figured it out, how to be a local by giving back to NYC in more than one way…

Jonothon Lyons is the talented actor, creative, and performer behind the mask and viral sensation in New York City, Buddy the Rat.

Head on over to my Instagram (@gossipnistapodcast) to see photos/meet Jonothon if you haven’t already. This is an interview not only sharing the creation of ‘Buddy the Rat,’ but the New York story and journey of the man behind it.

Taking on the streets of New York during the pandemic entertaining and sometimes maybe even scarring city dwellers and tourist alike, Jonothon has embodied one of New York’s most illustrious inhabitants - the rat!

Hand crafting the rat mask himself, as well as the squeaky long rat tale, the large pizza slice he sometimes carries, a huge mouse trap and many other props that he developed out of his New York City apartment and sometimes even on his stoop for more room. Can we hear it for Jonothon’s one small step for a rat, and one giant leap for rat-kind! #BuddytheRat

Jonothon Lyons was destined to stardom at a young age, with his many talents as an actor, singer, dancer, pianist, playwright, director, creator, and the list can go on. But, would you believe me if I said this is not the first rat he’s played the role of and it’s almost as though he was meant to create Buddy the Rat from the onset.

See a photo of him as Templeton from Charlotte’s Web at a young age on Instagram at (@jonothonlyons).

With many other exciting projects in the work for Jonothon, such as his creation of 'The Apple Boys' play, a short film called 'Rat', and a lot of cool projects to come from Buddy the Rat, you’ll have to tune into the full episode to hear all about this and much more, plus Jonothon getting real about living in New York City and the many opportunities it offers.
