    Paul Gilbert

    Paul Gilbert

Paul is a legend in the guitar world known for his super-herculean chops, and also because he is a "musician with massive musicality ". You might have discovered him during his time in the mind-bending Racer X, or of course with the international MTV super-stars Mr. Big. Maybe the Power Drill Guitar technique got your attention. Paul Gilbert has kept his fans faithful for decades by delivering the best shred guitar around. Additionally, he's a hell of a nice guy who is also super-funny, which makes for a delightful conversation with Greg on the Season 4 opener of Chewing the Gristle!

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E39

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E39

Episode 39 of Season 5 went out live at 7 pm sharp on 29 Sept 2022.  As usual, the show was hosted by Rebel Rock Radio.  We got going with Jorn and a track called 'Some Day They Will Put Out the Sun’, it was agreed that if it was in Soth Africa it would have been out long ago, or broken, or lost.  Next up Hell Fire out of San Fransisco, a truly wonderful band with a track called Cities Ablaze off their 2nd album called Free Again.  From there a bit Sevendust with ‘Black’ and Last In Line with ‘Already Daed’ with Vivian Campbell playing like he used to in Dio, which is fitting as they are Dio but without Ronnie James Dio.

We went back to the early ’70s circa 71/72 and listened to Mott The Hoople Cover the Lou Reed classic ‘Sweet Jane’, which led to Neil Young’s ‘Sugar Mountain’, sweet thing geddit?  A new track from Billy Idol off his new EP The Cage went down well, as did a new track off Ozzy Osbournes latest album Patient #9.  We listened to 'Immortal' featuring Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCreedy.  Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan in Mr Big reminded us just how well bass and lead can fit together.

We took another new track off Five Finger Death Punch’s latest album AfterLife.  Germany got a look in with Die Toten Hosen and ‘Alles Wir Gut’.  We carried on with last week's discovery, a band called Sumerlands, and then went off in a classic rock direction with 'Riders On the Storm' specially dedicated to one of TSORR’s much-appreciated listeners ho lost a family member this week :-(.

We had tracks from The Stranglers and The Jam, it's just punk by virtue of the time the bands were formed and their history but I consider them truly iconic rock bands.  The ladies were represented by Brody Dalle and her band The Distillers with ‘The Hunger’ and The Donna’s and a track called ‘Who Invited You’.  The South African stuff came from When Angels Came, Francois Van Coke, and Fire Horses.  After that, we checked out the debut album from My Chemical Romance and a track called 'Headfirst For Halos' which is really cool.  We finished heavy with In Flames, Arch Enemy and Slayer.

Artists featured:  Jorn, Hell Fire, Sevendust, Tremonti, Last In Line, Mott The Hoople, Neil Young, Mr Big, Tygers of Pan Tang, Rush, Billy Idol, Black Spiders, Alice In Chains, Bush, Anvil Black Veil Brides, Die Toten Hosen, Ozzy Osbourne, Five Finger Death Punch, Sumerlands, Rob Zombie, The Doors, Live, The Stranglers, The Jam, Parkway Drive, Venom, The Donna’s, The Distillers, When Angels Came, Fire Horses, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, in Flames, Arch Enemy, Slayer

Episode 126 - Christopher P. Hilton! Christopher wrote a great book, "The Rise, Fall & Rebirth of Hair Metal."  This is the most comprehensive book on the subject I have ever seen.  It starts off with defining the term hair metal, how it came to fruition and takes it from the beginning to present day.  He covers all the big groups including Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Poison, and more.  But he also does a deep dive with many releases I was not familiar with but glad I discovered.  In this interview we skim the contents of the book including many interesting facts such as the guest vocalist on Warrant's "Cherry Pie", Slash auditioning for Poison, and which hair band Christopher never really got in to. Great stuff!

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E3

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E3

The thoroughly enjoyable Episode 3 of season 4 went out live at 7 pm on the 21st of January 2021.  It was great right from the start, there were plenty of people tuned in and from Boston’s opening track ‘Don’t Look Back’ all the way through to Parkway Drive it was a cracker.  A listener highlighted the fact that at 21h21 we would be 21 hours, 21 minutes, 21 seconds of the 21st day of the 21st year of the 21st century.  That created some pressure to find a suitable song to play at the time.  Even more so because before I found this out I had already played Green Day’s 21 Guns which would have been good.

We ran through a lot of 80’s metal;  Ratt, Mr Big, Skid Row, Lita Ford, Tygers of Pan Tang, Slaughter, and Keel and we checked out 70s giants The Sweet and the inimitable Ted Nugent.  The punk section was covered by the Sex Pistols and The Stranglers and Aussies were represented by Wolfmother, Cold Chisel, and The Lazys.  Special mention here for Cold Chisel, I played Bal-A-Versailles and the feedback was instant, “what a great track”!  Usually, I will get a comment about a song but literally, immediately, 4 comments came in about it.  Another crowd-pleaser was SA’s own The Black Cat Bones with ‘Don’t Wake the Scarecrow', again, to all-round approval, it’s a song that raises goosebumps every time.

Other than that we checked out the remarkable rebranding and rebuilding of the career of Ron Keel and we sorted out the 21 hours, minutes, and seconds thing by being able to say that at the exact time we were listening to The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show and being blasted by a suitable bit of metal which was fitting in many ways.

Artists featured:  Boston, ACDC, Godsmack, Ratt, Mr Big, The Sweet, Hinder, Paragon, Green Day, The Rolling Stones, System of a Down, Skid Row, Lita Ford, Halestorm, Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, Wolfmother, Cold Chisel, The Lazys, Ted Nugent, Static-X, Seether, Black Star Riders, Mustasch, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Cougar, Metallica, Tygers on Pan Tang, Avenged Sevenfold, Rammstein, Machine Head, Slaughter, Aking, The Diamond Dogs, The Black Cat Bones, Keel, Ron Keel Band, Parkway Drive

Limited Appeal - Cocktail Band Party (not the video game) Part 1
We're live! Face to face to face. One face is missing. But it probably also has nose hair. Ugh this is, even, by our standards, a rather disgusting episode. What about above-the-ass back hair? Listen carefully, and you'll discover whether these traits are a tipping point concerning whether we'll be able to continue procreating. Or maybe that's a complete bit of nonsense that you won't be able to help but shake your head at. Anyway, if you're still listening by some chance, we later try to name 5 band names that could be a phallic euphemism. Play along. Not with your phallus, you pervert! With our name around 5 things segment. Jesus. If you can stop touching yourself long enough to free up one hand, and if you want John to send you a free photo of his back hair, email us (maskedman@limitedappeal.net). Interview: Paul Gilbert

    Interview: Paul Gilbert
In the years since he made a name for himself as a member of the speed-rock band Racer X, Paul Gilbert has become one of the world's most influential guitarists. A chameleon-like player, there seems to be little that he can't do - from arena rock to Beatles covers. We managed to grab Paul Gilbert for a lively, wide-ranging interview, and he even answered some of MusicRadar's user's questions. For more Paul Gilbert including guest lessons, as well as the best music news, reviews and tuition, head to www.musicradar.com.

    Interview: Billy Sheehan

    Interview: Billy Sheehan
Billy Sheehan is to the electric bass what Eddie Van Halen is to the electric guitar. Over the years, the Buffalo, New York-born virtuoso has changed the way people think about the four-stringed instrument. His use of chords, two-handed tapping, and controlled feedback has made him a superstar of a style that has become known as 'lead bass'. During a recent interview with MusicRadar, Sheehan recalled his early influences, spoke of the heady times playing Japan with Mr. Big and revealed that he once almost joined Van Halen. For more Billy Sheehan and the best music news, reviews and tuition, head to www.musicradar.com.
