209: Surviving, Thriving and Scaling with Jessie Williams

    Question for you.

Did you know that I own a retail store? I’ve mentioned it a few times on the show, but in case this is news to you, let me tell you about it. My shop is called Station7 in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle. My mom started it in 2015 and I took it over in 2019, and it is so wonderful. We feature goods from mostly local artists and makers, we priorotize businesses that are owned by women and members of the BIPOC and LGBTQ communities. It is awesome.

It’s not often that I get to sit down with a fellow retail store owner on this podcast, and it was so much fun to talk shop with Jessie Williams. Jessie is BUSY. Not only does she own three retail locations in North Carolina, two Edge of Urge locations, and one Unlikely Professionals, but she also owns and manages Cute House, a vacation rental home also in North Carolina. All of her businesses and side projects, (too many to list in this intro!), are focused on supporting up-and-coming makers and small businesses, as well as giving back to her community.

I have admired Jessie and her work via Edge of Urge for a while now, and it was such a joy to sit down and pick her brain. She was so open and thoughtful, and I got so much out of our conversation. I know you will too.

    Pursuing The Non-Traditional Path

Embarking on an unconventional career path may seem daunting, but it's the price for an authentically crafted life. Such careers break free from norms, enabling you to express your identity. In this week’s episode, Lauren shares her early ambition to move to LA for professional dance, revealing how her non-linear path shaped her unique career. She emphasizes the significance of pursuing interests and curiosity, even without a clear goal.

The episode delves into the topic of the non-traditional path, offering insights and tips for those navigating unconventional journeys. Remember, the essence lies in the journey, not the destination.

A Surprisingly Effective Alternative to Multi-tasking

A Surprisingly Effective Alternative to Multi-tasking

Multi-tasking is the idea of doing two things at once and it’s a myth because you can’t actually focus on two things at once. Now before you tell me everything you’ve done at the same time and how it’s on your resume because your boss required it, so it must be true…hear me out.

This week, episode 176 of the Positively Living Podcast is about a surprisingly effective alternative to multitasking!

What we consider to be multitasking is really “task switching.” And you might be brilliant at it. And many employers expect it regularly, which irks me, but it’s not a battle I can fight now.

With task switching, your brain shifts from one kind of focus to another, and if you have strong executive brain functions, you can do it in such a way that it seems simultaneous. However, even if you’re quite amazing at it, frequent task-switching is inherently problematic.

    I discuss:

    • What multi-tasking is and how we’re trained to think it works.
    • Why multi-tasking doesn't work for most multi-passionates.
    • A more effective alternative to multi-tasking.
    • Examples of task combining and how to use it every day.

Strategic task combining is not a foolproof technique, but it is still far superior to task switching.

Why Multi-Passionate Creatives Need a Unique Productivity Strategy

Why Multi-Passionate Creatives Need a Unique Productivity Strategy

In a society that celebrates and elevates specialization and single-minded dedication, multi-passionate creatives can feel out of place, but in reality, they stand out. Their unique blend of talents and interests makes them some of the most creative and innovative people and potentially the busiest.

Unfortunately, traditional productivity approaches tend to be singular and linear, which isn’t a good fit for us. How, then, can multi-passionates honor their passions, achieve their goals, and avoid burnout when the approaches offered don’t apply to them?

This week, episode 174 of the Positively Living Podcast explains why multi-passionate creatives need a unique productivity strategy!

    I discuss:

    • Why multi-passionate creatives need a unique productivity strategy.
    • The struggles that multi-passionates face today.
    • Why traditional productivity strategies don’t work for them.
    • My 5-part system to help creatives find harmony and productivity.

When you’re a multi-passionate, you possess a wealth of creativity and innovation. I know it can get you in trouble sometimes, but it’s also a set of superpowers you can lean into as you adopt a unique productivity strategy meant just for you.

Overcoming Money Mindset Blocks with Stacey Marie Keba

In part 1 I introduced you to actor Stacey Marie Keba as she shared her journey of Self-Discovery, Confidence & Branding. We talked about the coaching we did together but in part 2 you can listen in as I coach her through her limiting beliefs around money. Stacey opens up about her struggles with feeling undeserving of payment and the fear of charging for her graphic design, acting and producing services.

Self-Discovery, Confidence & Branding with Actor Stacey Marie Keba

Like many aspiring actors, Stacey Marie Keba struggled with a lack of clarity about her brand. As a former coaching client of mine, I invited her on the show to discuss her transformational journey from self-doubt and overwhelm to confidently presenting her value as an actor to the industry. Stacey recently walked the red carpet in Paris in support of her role in Universal France’s 2022 French-American Comedy Mon Héroïne. Today she auditions regularly, has numerous projects in the works, and has added producer to her multi-hyphenated career.

Being Multi Passionate and Building Your Business Outside of the Box with Madison Tinder

Being Multi Passionate and Building Your Business Outside of the Box with Madison Tinder

Today’s episode is for every entrepreneur out there who wonders “Is it possible to venture out of bounds from my current business and do something totally different?”

Madison Tinder – a Multi-Passionate Business + Marketing Mentor – would answer, “Heck YEAH!”

As a modern day Renaissance Woman, Madison’s got a lot to say about building your personal brand – and how that is the key to making each and every passion you pursue successful (i.e. doing so without losing a dedicated client-base).

Sounds kinda like that elusive-yet-constantly-advertised “freedom of choice” that every entrepreneur dreams of…

Quick overview of what we cover:

    • Why Madison equates sustainability in her biz to its potential for expansion
    • Why a lot of entrepreneurs make the mistake of confusing ‘sustainability’ with ‘consistency’
    • How to go rogue and UN-NICHE yourself
    • Why it’s perfectly okay to Start Over
    • Why broadening what you talk about doesn’t diminish your credibility – it makes you human (and wildly relatable)
    • How to tell the if the urge to pivot is from Burnout or Inexperience
    • The exact strategy Madison follows when adding new ventures to her wheelhouse
    • How viewing your personal brand as an umbrella helps frame long-term strategy
    • The business ideas that Madison has in the works for 2024 and beyond

After graduating from SMU in Dallas, Madison struggled finding a full-time job.

It was here that she had her awakening. For her side hustle, she did what any other 20-something was good at, she started helping people with their social media. From here she just ran with it and the next thing she knew she opened her first social media agency Lone Star Digital Content. After some time of growing her company, she was ready to take on some bigger responsibilities. She dove full force into coaching and consulting, which led to the creation of Madison Tinder LLC in August 2018.

It was only up from there. She went from social media manager to full-time business/visibility mentor for multi-passionates. She also owns Soulful Scrunchies and Soulful Select Retreats.

Lauryn Laszczak: Navigating Ambition After Loss

Lauryn Laszczak: Navigating Ambition After Loss

Sometimes, being around grieving people can be uncomfortable.

For many of us, the instinct is to avoid the topic and walk on eggshells so as not to upset anyone. But as today’s guest Lauryn Laszczak reminds us, the emotions around grief are so vital. Confusion, frustration, doubt, sadness, anger and discomfort are all necessary experiences because with them comes WISDOM.

Lauryn is a somatic business coach, three-time female founder, wife, mama of three, and the host of the Loss and Light podcast, which is named for her newest company, inspired by the loss of her stillborn son, Ben.

My friend Lauryn has a beautiful perspective on ambition, internal purpose and allowing ourselves to feel and talk about those things that make us (and others) uncomfortable – if we do, we may find we’re able to achelmize those feelings into something beautiful and meaningful.

Aligning Life As A Multi-Passionate with Bev Feldman

Aligning Life As A Multi-Passionate with Bev Feldman

Aligning Life as a Multi-passionate can seem complicated. How do you decide what to focus on, what to monetize, and what you actually WANT to do? It can get a little overwhelming. It’s hard not to fall into worrying about picking the “wrong” thing or letting go of the “right” thing. Even passions in our life can have seasons but it’s hard to let go when you’ve spent so much time, money, and energy in a particular area. It’s important to know when something no longer fits and how to allow a pivot to happen. Self-trust, releasing outcomes, and sometimes a little outside support can be key in moving into a new chapter that honors your values and gifts in a new way.

In this episode of the Unlimited Podcast I invited Bev Feldman to join me in a conversation around aligning life as a multi-passionate entrepreneur.

Some of what we talk about in this episode include:

    • Identifying and aligning with your values in your work
    • How to grow from what isn’t working
    • Reframing what it means to be an expert
    • Embracing your passions as part of you, not who you are
    • Eco-friendly birthday ideas

Being a Multi-Passionate with Rebecca Mir Grady

Being a Multi-Passionate with Rebecca Mir Grady

Rebecca is a southwest-based multi-passionate creative; photographer, jeweler, painter, and writer. She likes keeping her hands and mind busy, in the studio and out in nature. She has self-published over 20 artist books. She makes jewelry by hand with recycled gold and silver, conflict-free diamonds and ethically sourced stones. She uses natural light and elements to tell stories with her photography. Her paintings focus on light and highlight climate change.

In this episode, we chatted about what it is like to be a multi-passionate with an interdisciplinary approach towards making art.

This episode is more like a casual conversation where Becca is sharing her story, how she sees the world and what has shaped her approach. If you consider yourself a multi-passionate too, this episode will encourage you to give permission to follow your curiosities in a way that works for you and keep going.

Here's what we talk about in this episode:

    • a little intro about Rebecca and her work
    • how she juggles and makes time for all these different creative ventures
    • what helps her in making time for writing
    • figuring out ways to clear the head and making time to do nothing
    • her experience of going to art school
    • where the interdisciplinary approach comes from
    • struggles of being a multi-passionate
    • how she manages her focus
    • not making everything about working or making money but having a few things to do as a hobby
    • building healthy habits: carving more time for reading
    • finding goals that have nothing to do with work like training for a marathon so you are not always in the studio
    • what following your curiosity looks like
    • carving out time where there are no expectations so you are letting yourself to be curious
    • the importance of being bored
    • managing time and your energies along the way
    • reconnecting with your own creativity when you start to feel overwhelmed
    • the artists way inspired activities that help: morning pages and artist dates
    • importance of asking yourself questions that move you forward
    • how to tackle the overwhelm and busy months
    • always learning something new and staying engaged
    • her collection of paintings on the climate change - in her own words, ''things we don't see, things we can't see and things we won't see because it is all changing so much''
    • we create connections by visual artwork and sharing our thoughts in that way
    • the different mediums give you different kinds of opportunities and lifestyles
    • self-employment and the need for human interaction
    • current struggles along the lines of recovering from burnout and too much work and staying inspired
    • the struggles with connection, internet, and social media as solace for self-employed creatives but also, it is taking over our lives
    • relationship with Instagram - Instagram and connection
    • learning to balance the use of social media and putting the phone down
    • other sides of small business: accounting, finances and administration tasks
    • learning to be more efficient

    • the role of planning ahead of time and having a bigger picture in her work
