    Show 98 Roger Harwood (Corowood/Sailor)

Welcome to ALTBAYS Show (feat. Leo Magri)

    Meet Roger Harwood

Roger is the son of a carpenter, and he has worked with many kinds of wood for over 35 years. He is the owner of Corowood and believes the properties of New Zealand Kauri, the smell, strength, beauty and durability, help to create excellent quality wooden products.

All of the Kauri wood used in Corowood products is harvested from remnants of trees cut down more than 100 years ago, recovered beside rivers in the bush or on beaches. The anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties in the gum preserve the wood for long periods and make it ideal for preparing and serving food.

Roger also owns an orchard and is an expert in biodiversity and organics. He’s sailed around the world and is passionate about the arts.

Tune in and listen to the stories of this interesting man who likes to share his ideas about systemic changes and our society.

ALTBAYS Show invites awesome people from Aotearoa, New Zealand, to have an honest, laid-back conversation. Our platform focuses on bringing communities together to grow and thrive.

Ep6. How NFTs are shaking up the art and music world

Ep6. How NFTs are shaking up the art and music world

NFTs have fueled a boom in digital art, from established artists working in the new medium to athletes, influencers and others creating new collectibles that people are buying for millions of dollars, for example Twitter’s Jack Dorsey selling his first tweet ever as an NFT for over $2.9 million. In this episode of the Withers talks: cryptocurrency podcast, ‘How NFTs are shaking up the art and music world,’ podcast host Charles Kolstad is joined by Diana Wierbicki, head of our global art practice in Withers’ New York office, to discuss NFTs in art and music, including the buzz they are creating at the intersection of art and crypto and top considerations for individuals beginning to invest in them.

As Diana introduces in her early comments, an NFT, or non-fungible token, is a digital certificate of ownership and it can hold creative work like a song or a digital work of art.  Artists sell digital work as NFTs to offer buyers a unique digital commodity that has been authenticated with blockchain technology. An investor holds the NFT in their digital wallet and experiences the digital art when they open it.

For people who are interested in buying or selling NFTs, what are the critical issues from a legal and regulatory perspective?  What are the risks, tax considerations and is there insurance?  What’s next in this space?  Listen as Diana dispels the confusion around NFTs and discusses with Charles the NFT excitement from both the artist and investor, or art collector, perspectives.

You can read more about NFTs on our webpage, Clarity in a changing art market: NFTs.

    Self-Publishing a Book

    Self-Publishing a Book

Ever wondered what goes in to self-publishing a book? I have heard from so many entrepreneurs, especially over the past year, who are finally starting to dust off their book idea(s) and turn them into reality.

Our guests this week, Miriam Wagliardo (published author and tradeshow event producer) and Nancy Giammarco (published author, illustrator and sound engineer) did just that. They tell us all about the steep learning curve of the process, tools they used, their first 'COVID' marketing phase, and their plans for getting their book into the mainstream post-pandemic.

    The Start

    • Miriam: dancing ballet professionally and teaching, singer in a band, interior design, tradeshow event producer
    • Nancy:  Market degree, website design, guitars/keyboards/backing vocals in bands, sound engineer
    • The two met with the band Mojo Dolls

    The Shift

    • Nancy had written and illustrated a book, Under the Purple Sea, and posted drawings to Facebook
    • These drawings inspired Marian to reach out to Nancy to collaborate

     The Strategy

    • Miriam's vivid dreams would be the foundation of the book
    • The process they created to get this book finished - remotely and during COVID

    The Action

    The Mindset

    • Nancy:  To recharge - walking the dog (check out stories of her dog Tuff here), weightlifting, and practice illustrating everyday. Read, study, take classes to learn new elements of illustration
    • Miriam: To recharge - working out (especially crucial when recovering from a serious car accident in 2016), painting, sewing
    • Goals and Vision

      • Working on their next book
      • Implement marketing campaign once COVID restrictions lift, including international elements

    The Wrap-Up

If you could listen to one music artist for the rest of your life, who would it be?

    Miriam - Journey

    Nancy - Fleetwood Mac

#32: MUS: Mere Uddannelse Straks eller… ?

Sounds of the future with Darcy Read

Sounds of the future with Darcy Read

Over the last month-and-a-half, I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with some amazing young people, hearing about their experiences in lockdown, their thoughts about this brave new world and sharing ideas on how to navigate it all.

They’ve helped me focus on the things that really matter: inner peace, connectedness and the power of creativity to help us heal and find meaning in our lives. I learn as much from the youth of today as I can only hope they learn from me, and it is because of them that I am continually inspired to keep making things for positive impact.

So I’m thrilled to round out the ‘At Home’ series with a future-focused conversation with another stellar young person in Darcy Read, a recent Media graduate with a passion for filmmaking, sound design and music.

We chat about the impact the pandemic is having on the film and entertainment industry, throwing caution to the wind by predicting the new challenges (and opportunities) for young creators working on building their careers.

As a freelance sound designer and music producer, Darcy shares his experiences on independent work, the importance of up-skilling and the desire to learn and collaborate on-the-job despite the continual rise of the gig economy and casual workforce.

We get a better understanding of what young people face as they tackle the job-search with feelings of inexperience and pressure, as well as explore ways our community can contribute to workplace structures that lack insight into the creative process.

This is an episode packed with thoughts about the future of the creative industry and how we as creators can feel empowered through our work in the ever-changing socio-economic landscape.

Thank you for listening and if you haven’t already, be sure to catch up on all of our insightful ‘At Home’ conversations here or by subscribing to the podcast!
