Marijke Hecht, Establishing a Naturalist's Identity in Community Programs

Marijke Hecht, Establishing a Naturalist's Identity in Community Programs

Dr. Marijke Hecht is an Assistant Professor at Penn State whose research of urban greenspaces involves the interaction between humans and more-than-human nature. In 2019 I read Dr. Hecht's paper about cultivating 21st-century naturalists. When I sat down with Dr. Hecht to discuss her research, she was then a doctoral candidate at the University of Pittsburgh. I am excited to share that Dr. Hecht's dissertation is now complete and has been published.

If you have an interest in identity development, out-of-school learning, informal science education, or curriculum design, consider reading Marijke’s dissertation. You’ll find a link in the show notes.

Before you dig in, listen to our conversation first. This will give you a solid introduction to Dr. Hecht's research.

Waiting for the Night Song: Julie Carrick Dalton's Suspense Novel

Waiting for the Night Song: Julie Carrick Dalton's Suspense Novel
We'll Drop In with Julie Carrick Dalton about her debut novel about secrets -- both the earth's secrets and personal -- values and friendship. When Cadie and her friend Daniela witness a murder as children, they’re forced to keep it a secret. But when the incident resurfaces decades later after they’ve drifted apart, time runs short for both as they try to figure out whether the truth is worth the sacrifice. This is an incredibly timely book in the vein of Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy and Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver that has a parallel narrative about the bark beetle infestation and rising threat of forest fires due to climate change that ties together an affecting narrative of friendship and immigration, ethics and the ramifications of our decisions. Dalton’s unique background in science, agriculture and journalism clearly informs her engaging prose and plot. Waiting for the Night Song is an atmospheric literary suspense debut novel that was recently featured as a most anticipated thriller/mystery for 2021 by both Buzzfeed and Frolic, as well as a most anticipated 2021 read by Betches and Medium’s Angela Lashbrook, who called it “an evocative, beautifully-written debut.” Some more recent book love: · “A startling and timely debut, Julie Carrick Dalton's Waiting for the Night Song is a moving, brilliant novel about friendships forged in childhood magic and ruptured by the high price of secrets that leave you forever changed.” (Bookish) · Dalton's debut is a story of friendship, family, and the consequences of acting out of fear, especially when those actions are performed to protect those we love. The storytelling is made even more vivid by the way the novel practically breathes the woods of New Hampshire. (Booklist)

    Birding in paradise.

    Birding in paradise.

Sometimes we forget how very precious and unique our own backyards are, and that we don't need to travel thousands of miles to be some place that exists nowhere else on the planet.  For today's guest the Perth Hills is that very fabulous and special place. And it was this appreciation of knowing  the Perth Hills was the special land at the end of the yellow brick road, that led this young woman to write and publish her very own bird watching guide of the special birds endemic to her own patch of paradise.
Talitha may only be a young woman, but she knows the value in the Jarrah and Marri trees that create the Perth hills forests. These forests have evolved in this special part of Australia for millions of years and are found nowhere else on the planet.  As such they have created a unique ecosystem in which Talitha has explored and provided an insight into the birds that chose to make this special forest their home.
Join us in this episode to listen to the intriguing story of why a young Australian chose to share her passion for birds with the rest of us humans who share this world.

Talitha mentions several organisations and businesses - these will be listed below.

Byron Ballard grew up wild and “unchurched” in the mountains of rural western North Carolina.  That lack of religious structure allowed her to grow her own spiritual practices - which later she would identify as Paganism/Wicca, a collection of earth based spirtual practices.

Such beliefs manifested around the world with similar ideas.  Ballard is a folklorist specializing in the cultural history of the Scotch/Irish who immigrated to the Appalachian mountains.

David Holladay Pt. II - Modern Caveman (#133)

David has worked (and continues to with some organizations) with many of the wilderness survival programs in the country, including Boulder Outdoor Survival School (BOSS), Rabbit Stick and Winter Count (bi-annual primitive skills training events), Reevis Mountain, California Survival School, Pollen Circles, and Preppercon. He teaches on Native paints, ground stone tools, water procurement, desert navigation, stone age options vs. modern, desert food collection and preparation, shelter-building, fire-making and so much more.

David is famous for his delicate arrowheads, beautiful stone pendants and bears and more recently paintings. David lovingly and mindfully works his craft and you know that whatever you might possess that David has created is imbued with his deeply spiritual love and respect for nature.

David has been guiding people into the wilderness for decades, teaching them how to live and even thrive in the only seemingly desolate land of the SouthWest. He has worked with many struggling teens and their families with the Anasazi Foundation, and Aspen Achievement Academy, led the foundational Passages To Recovery group (an adult wilderness recovery program), was a senior instructor with BOSS for many many years, and leads groups into Mexico's very rural Copper Canyon to experience the Tarahumara, a very reclusive culture.

If you are around David for any length of time you find him drumming or playing the piano, guitar or his lap dulcimer, singing songs both beautiful and sometimes funny and instructional - he has a great rap song called "Brush Your Teeth."

LOCKED IN A VACANCY EP12: "So On He Fares" by George Moore

LOCKED IN A VACANCY EP12: "So On He Fares" by George Moore

George Moore was a novelist, short-story writer, poet, art critic, memoirist and dramatist. Although his work is sometimes seen as outside the mainstream of both Irish and British literature, he is as often regarded as the first great modern Irish novelist, influencing such authors as James Joyce, who we have also featured on this series. "So On He Fares" is the 10th chapter in a collection of short stories called "The Untilled Field" first published in 1903.

In the Earth Day launch of the Wonder Outside Podcast, naturalist and outdoor educator, Ted Mattison, also known as Ranger Ted, talks with Annabeth Gish about how to find simple, practical and available adventures in the great outdoors. Covering a wide range of topics from New Mexico to Iowa; from hikes with kids to finding solace in the vast expanse of the prairie, from walking in our own neighborhoods with our senses open to remembering where the biggest strawberry in the world is located, Ted and Annabeth highlight the need to get outside regularly for our physical, mental and spiritual health.

EP 19: (Season 1 Finale!) Going all in, with Homesteader David Sleininger

EP 19: (Season 1 Finale!) Going all in, with Homesteader David Sleininger

Welcome to the Season 1 finale of Our Nature! This week’s guest is a very special one to me because he happens to be my boyfriend. David Sleininger is a former jazz musician turned homesteader turned energy healer. His story is one of both devastating injury and immense healing. I don’t want to give too much away because I think it’s important for him to share his story in his own voice, but I will say that after years of darkness and suffering, he turned to nature for support...and it was instrumental in helping him heal from chronic pain. His journey is so inspiring to anyone dealing with chronic pain or injury, anyone who is interested in learning more about homesteading or simply being more self reliant, and anyone who is looking to witness someone who has followed their intuition even when the path seemed uncertain.

In this episode, we talk about what homesteading is, why there has been a recent resurgence in homesteading, what David’s homestead looks like, his journey from music to bread baking to homesteading to energy healing and what each shift has taught him along the way, why he can’t use power tools and how that affected his building project, what nature taught him about himself, the balance of feminine and masculine and so much more. It was vulnerable and fun for me to record this podcast with David. We’re very real with each other as you’ll hear. David doesn’t have social media at all and I don’t put him on my social media, so it feels really special to use this platform to share his story. I hope you enjoy it and I’ll see you in 2020!

“I tend to think about things like - am I moving away from something, or am I moving towards something?” - David Sleininger

“I have had a few dramatic shifts in my life and I have found that when my intuitive voice is loud enough, if I follow it, those transitions are actually much smoother and more settled than you’d think.” - David Sleininger

“Being with nature is a dance.” - David Sleininger

Gratitude List: This podcast would not be possible without the group of talented individuals below. I offer them my sincerest thanks and love.

    THE LAST 5 QUESTIONS:

    1. What is your favorite place in nature? Anywhere that can wake me up despite myself.

    2. What is the animal, mineral or plant that resonates with you the most? I have always felt deeply connected to trees.

    3. What is one thing we can do right now to connect with the natural world and bring more harmony into our lives? Look up a tree, or rock or plant you’re curious about and learn about it.

    4. What’s the greatest lesson nature has taught you? That I’m capable. That I can do it. And that – nature will support everything I need, anytime I need it.

    5. Complete this sentence: Nature brings me…If I listen to what’s going on in my inner nature and connect to the natural world around me, I’ll have the information, I’ll have the intuitive messaging, I’ll have the health that I need to do what I feel drawn to do.
