Experiential Interpretive Design - Bill Reynolds, Lars Wohlers, Mike Mayer

In this episode, we meet the co-founders of Experiential Interpretive Design (EID) -- Bill Reynolds, Lars Wohlers, and Mike Mayer. Collectively, they have many years of experience in interpretation and experience design and bring to EID the experience they gained from various roles in tourism, planning, heritage interpretation, environmental education, and coaching. We learn about the founders, why they started EID Coaching, and discuss what is working in the field of interpretation and what is not working. This is the first installment of a two-part episode.

In Part 2 of this episode, I sit down with Mike Mayer to learn more about the environmental education program that inspires the work he, Bill, and Lars do at EID.

Birds, Bugs, and the Serenity of Nature with Giff Beaton

Giff Beaton and Allie Kelly moved to Serenbe from Atlanta six years ago, motivated by a desire to raise their twin boys closer to nature and to escape the city’s urban sprawl. By day, Giff works as a Delta pilot - but he is also an accomplished naturalist & nature photographer, authoring or co-authoring multiple books  like Birds of Georgia, Dragonflies & Damselflies, and Tiger Beetles of the Southeastern United States. Giff also leads the occasional nature walk in Serenbe, which is a can’t miss event for residents and visitors alike.

In this interview, Steve and Monica chat with Giff about how his interest in nature began, the unique species you can find right here in our neck of the woods, and why he finds time spent in nature so grounding and calming.

Ep. 483 – Master Carver Jerry Talton on the Art and Tradition of Decoy Making

On this episode of Ducks Unlimited podcast, host Katie Burke interviews Master Carver Jerry Talton. In this interview, Talton talks about how he got interested in carving decoys and shares his experience of growing up in the outdoors and his introduction to hunting and fishing. Growing up in North Carolina, he was initially interested in surfing and  even carved his own surfboards. He explains how after coming across a decoy he eventually gifted to his brother, he began to become increasingly interested in how decoys were carved and began to carve them himself. Talton further explains the story of his first duck hunt, where he shot a green-winged teal, which he claims to be God's favorite duck to shoot and eat, as it tastes the best.

S2E7: On Ethics in Wildlife Rehabilitation, With Lauren Glickman

S2E7: On Ethics in Wildlife Rehabilitation, With Lauren Glickman

Host Gail Buhl caught up with Lauren Glickman, a former Volunteer Manager at PAWS (Progressive Animal Welfare Society) in Seattle and current organizational training and development consultant.

Lauren Glickman began her career in the Peace Corps, then found her way into wildlife rehabilitation in the Seattle area. There she volunteered at PAWS and quickly realized she had found a passion for animal care. After landing a full-time role as a volunteer coordinator, Lauren established monthly ethics lectures for new volunteers, laying the groundwork for what would eventually become her niche as a consultant. Also while working at PAWS, Lauren earned a Masters of Applied Behavioral Science. “I wanted to support people who were working for missions I cared about,” she said in our interview.

In this episode, Gail dives into the complex topic of ethics in wildlife rehabilitation, one of Lauren’s specialties. They open the discussion by coming up with a working definition of of ethics, then dig into some specific cases that can arise with both animals and people in the course of wildlife rehabilitation operations. Such issues range from professionalism around animals being rehabilitated (no “nuzzling” of the squirrels, please) to informed consent during the recruiting and hiring process about wildlife rehabilitation job requirements and expectations.

Costa Rica Is Rich With Conservation, Biodiversity, Beauty And Culture

Milenlli Araya Masis is a naturalist guide in the Manuel Antonio region. Born in Costa Rica, she provides education into the country’s biodiversity with a vast knowledge of conservation, wildlife and history.

Costa Rica has 169 areas of conservation protecting 26% of the territory, with 5% of the biodiversity of the planet.

Milenlly shares some of the projects helping create successful conservation efforts in Costa Rica, including the reforestation of mangrove ecosystems in the community of Puerto Nispero, and Jacanas, a team of girls involved in bird watching and programs of conservation and biophilia.

Consistent exposure to natural elements through biophilic design supports longevity and ensures future generations maintain an affinity with nature so they grow up to be stewards of the wild places and diversity of animals making our planet exceptional.

Discover how an education center in Manuel Antonio is helping guarantee sustainability and environmental education in the Pacific of Costa Rica by doing investigation, volunteer programs and responsible tourism.

Also learn how a children's program is helping save the rain forest and the creation of a Marine conservation center for the reforestation of coral.

Milenlly explains how the forest cover now stands at more than 53% after painstaking work to reverse decades of deforestation and how today around a quarter of the country's land has turned into protected parks and reserves.

60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey: Snowfalls and Walking in the Center of the World

60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey: Snowfalls and Walking in the Center of the World

Hello to you listening in Seattle, Washington!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey with your host, Diane Wyzga.

For 3 days we’ve enjoyed a pretty robust snowfall for Whidbey Island. A few collected inches, temperatures hovering about 30 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 1 Celsius), and we have a wintery wonderland. The best part of these unscheduled snowfalls that catch the weather channel unawares is waking up in the wee small hours of the morning say, 5 AM, seeing the moon glow on the deck and realizing there’s more to it than light alone. It’s like being a child again anxious for a snow holiday!

Of course, that’s what’s called for: leaving the office behind and walking in the woods as if it’s the center of the world.

John Burroughs reminds us: “The lesson which Life constantly enforces is ‘Look underfoot. You are always nearer to the true sources of your power than you think. The lure of the distant and the difficult is deceptive. The great opportunity is where you are. Don't despise your own place and hour. Every place is the center of the world." [American Naturalist and essayist John Burroughs

Episode 11: Special Guest: Chris Schorn, Botanist and Senior Land Steward at Midcoast Conservancy in Maine discusses common New England lichen species, symbionts, reproduction and terminology, but also Botany

In Episode 11 of the Plants are People too Podcast we talk with Chris Schorn,  Botanist and Senior Land Steward at Midcoast Conservancy in Maine. Chris discusses lichen species like Lobaria and Cladonia  as well as a little on other Maine botanical subjects.

In this podcast, Chris discusses a few of the unique Maine habitats, some special flora of the midcoast maine area (Gentianopsis crinita, Lomatogonium, and Carex), land stewardship, and regional lichen species identification and terminology.

Lichens may seem visually similar to plants, but interestingly this special symbiotic relationship is formed between two completely different kingdoms of organisms (Protista and Fungi) and not a plant at all. Winter is a categorically boring time of year for botanists in the Northeast. So, if the snow has covered all the Lycopodiella and Spinulum species you were hoping to study this January, tune in and learn a little about the rich diversity of lichens on the New England landscape. Enjoy!
