Ep. 197: ERIC MARTIN from Mr. Big - Songs From The Road

This week is another star-studded episode of the InObscuria Podcast where we get songs and stories from the road. We had the opportunity to chat with the one and only Eric Martin from Mr. Big! He is a ball of pure energy and an amazing storyteller. We even get a Madonna story out of him that he’s never shared before! Come discover more about Mr. Big and their final tour, The Eric Martin Band, soundtracks, duets, covers, and more!

Wondering what this show is all about? We exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and place them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Kevin and Robert were both excited to have the opportunity to chat with Eric about the amazingly talented Mr. Big. We weren’t sure what we were in for when Eric sat down, and what we got was a hilarious and engaged guest that just happens to be huge in Japan (not to mention the awesome pipes in a band of some of the most talented players on the planet)!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Eric Martin – “Mission” from Working Man – A Tribute To Rush (1996)
    2. Eric Martin – “Spaceman” from I’m Goin’ Sane (2003)
    3. Eric Martin / Mr. Big – “One Way Out” from Caddyshack II – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1988)
    4. Eric Martin Band – “Sucker For A Pretty Face” from Sucker For A Pretty Face (1983)
    5. TMG – “Trapped” from TMG I (2004)

Ep. 192: Skins N' Bones - Talking Drums with Kent Aberle & Rob Hammersmith

Ep. 192: Skins N' Bones - Talking Drums with Kent Aberle & Rob Hammersmith

Join us for a very special episode with 2 of our favorite guests, as well as 2 of Atlanta’s greatest drummers: Rob Hammersmith (Skid Row) and Kent Aberle (Blackberry Smoke). We talk about all things that go bang, boom, thump, and crash! Poor Robert must suffer while 3 drummers in one room chat about the greatest of all time and the brightest of the unsung heroes of the rock n’ punk n’ metal drumming community. We get some awesome stories from the road as these 2 are always touring the world with Skid Row and Blackberry Smoke. You don’t want to miss this one! Plus, drummer jokes by Bakko from Cobras & Fire!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss all 3 with 2 of our favorite drummers in the world that both hosts have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with in the past. Kent and Rob come across like scholars and gentlemen… even though they’re drummers!

    E140: Remembering Lennie DiMuzio! 4-29-23

    E140: Remembering Lennie DiMuzio! 4-29-23

A special episode of Live From My Drum Room remembering Music Industry icon and Artist Relations pioneer, Lennie DiMuzio!

Lennie is best known for his 40+ years working at Zildjian, most notably in Artist Relations, as well as other key roles, and John is joined by Lennie’s daughter, Therese DiMuzio, and old friends and Zildjian alumni Colin Schofield, Jerry Donegan, Paul Francis, John Sorenson and Bill Morgan, along with Rob Wallis of Hudson Music, DCI Video and Drummers Collective. The group shared stories about Lennie during their time working at Zildjian, many involving Lennie's storied friendship with the legendary Armand Zildjian. The recurring theme throughout the episode is how much Lennie loved working in the Drum Industry and with drummers, and how much he was loved by everyone who ever met him. They also talk about Lennie’s hilarious memoir, “Tales From The Cymbal Bag” which is still available through Amazon.com. Lennie passed away in March 2015. He would have celebrated his 90th Birthday on May 4th. Watch for a future episode with legendary drummers remembering Lennie DiMuzio!

Check out John’s new show, “TrackTalk" on YouTube @livefrommydrumroom and all Podcast platforms!

    Rock Review: Rush

    Rock Review: Rush

This was one of the most enjoyable Rock Reviews I have done.  It was made in a hurry due to some work pressure and it is all the better for it.  You could say I did Rush in a rush.  The beauty of Rock Review is that it often leads to a bit of an obsession with the band for a while, in this case, it worked and I am seriously Rush befok at the moment.  Check it out.

    Ep. 129: R.I.P. Alan White

    Ep. 129: R.I.P. Alan White

It is again with heavy hearts that we deliver this week’s episode about yet another fallen drummer: the amazing Mr. Alan White. The YES drummer passed away on May 26, 2022, at the age of 72 after dealing with some more recent illnesses. Kevin has a very deep connection to YES and Alan as a lifelong fan and student of their music. While not an obscure band by any means (the Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famers have sold 13.5 million RIAA-certified albums in the US, as well as more than 30 million albums worldwide and in 1985, they won a Grammy award), Alan had a number of side projects and collaborations during his 50-year tenure with YES. Another tough loss for the classic and progressive rock community.

New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In the case of this particular episode, we are leaning towards the LOST. We are paying tribute to another titan of rock drummers! Rest In Peace Alan. Heaven’s rhythm section just got mightier!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Adrian Belew / Alan White / Keith Emerson – “In The Flesh?” from Back Against The Wall – A Tribute To Pink Floyd (2005)
    2. White – “Fate” from White (2006)
    3. Yes – “Make It Easy / Owner Of A Lonely Heart” from Union Live (1991)
    4. Alan White – “One Way Rag” from Ramshackled (1976)
    5. CIRCA: – “Information Overload” from CIRCA: (2006)
    6. Levin-Torn-White – “The Hood Fell” from Levin Torn White (2011)
    7. Yes – “The Calling” from Endless Dream: New York 6.19.94 (1994)

Ep. 128: Degrees Of Separation... RUSH

Ep. 128: Degrees Of Separation... RUSH

This week is our 7th installment of, “Degrees Of Separation…” where we discuss the more obscure side projects and solo releases from some not-so-obscure artists. This week we were touched by the spirit of radio! That’s right: RUSH! We had to dig deep to get songs from these 3 Canadian phenoms outside of the mighty RUSH. Known for their hectic schedule and amazing work ethic of record-tour-record-tour throughout their 40+ year career, we were able to cobble together some unique songs outside their main gigs. Hope ya dig!

New to InObscuria? It’s all about excavating obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. While we may be talking about bands that you know intimately in this episode, perhaps you are not aware of the depth of side projects they have had over their long careers. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Victor – “Start Today” from Victor (1996)
    2. I Mother Earth – “Good For Sule” from Blue Green Orange (1999)
    3. Jeff Berlin & Vox Humana – “Champion (Of The World)” from Champion (1985)
    4. Platinum Blonde – “Crying Over You” from Alien Shores (1985)
    5. The Big Dirty Band – “I Fought The Law” from Trailer Park Boys: The Movie Soundtrack (2006)
    6. Vertical Horizon – “Instamatic” from Echoes From The Underground (2013)
    7. Envy Of None – “Spy House” from Envy Of None (2022)

    Ep. 121: R.I.P. Taylor Hawkins

    Ep. 121: R.I.P. Taylor Hawkins

Sometimes life happens… and sometimes death happens. Everyone in the rock world was shocked to hear of Taylor Hawkins's untimely passing on March 25, 2022. We didn’t know the man, but certainly thought a lot of him as a phenomenal musician who really was the driving force behind the Foo Fighters as well as modern rock n’ roll in general. From videos and documentaries, he seemed like a really cool guy and sweet dude. This week we pay tribute to the smilin’ heavy hitter and a hell of a singer, the only way we know how, by not playing a single note from the Foo Fighters.

New to InObscuria? It’s all about digging up obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode, we will focus on Taylor’s solo material, guest appearances, and side projects. If there is one positive thing to come from this sadness, it would be that all of his great music gets the exposure it deserves.

    Songs this week include:

    1. Dave Grohl & Taylor Hawkins – “2112 Overture” from RUSH, Rock Hall Induction Ceremony (2013)
    2. Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders – “Shapes Of Things” from Get The Money (2019)
    3. Brian May – “Cyborg” from Another World (1998)
    4. Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders – “Louise” from Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders(2006)
    5. Coheed & Cambria – “No World For Tomorrow” from Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow(2007)
    6. Taylor Hawkins – “Southern Belles” from Kota (2016)
    7. The Birds Of Satan – “Wait Til Tomorrow” from The Birds Of Satan (2014)
    8. Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders – “Don’t Have To Speak” from Red Light Fever(2010)

"Who do you Think you Are?" (episode #33) - Thomas DeSchutter

"Who do you Think you Are?" (episode #33) - Thomas DeSchutter
Warning - this episode contains explicit language. What a delight and how super fun it was to spend some time with ministerial and metaphysics student, spiritual counsellor, financial advisor, and uber Rush fan, Thomas DeSchutter! With his opening response of, "I don't know anymore who I am", our conversation quickly leaned into what it means to navigate the present moment in tact, and how ultimately, gratitude is where it's at. Thomas talked to us about how his spiritual studies have lit a fire in his soul and heart, and about how the work we do on ourselves is constant and never done. He talked about how that work allows us to lessen the gap between where we are and what is possible that much more quickly. We talked curiosity, labels, and integrity. We also delved into the world of crypto currency, which opened the conversational door to the concepts of safety and risk. Money, value, scarcity, inflation vs. devaluation, Cesar's trimming of gold coins, Bitcoin, proof of work vs. staking, the value of money, and looking at currency in new ways all made for a rich, engaging, juicy conversation that could've kept going beyond the recorded two hours! Thomas also told us of having his mind blown at 7 years old when he first heard Rush drummer Neil Peart, and how the music of Rush inspired him to become a rock musician himself - both ruining and making his life! Thomas also shared his 5 Money Principles, and the 3 main teachings of Jesus distilled down to healing one another, breaking bread together, and building community. We talked freedom of choice, bodily autonomy, standing in Principle, segregation, using our imagination, and not being afraid to die. This, and so much more...! Plus, there's the super fun Rapid Fire Question Round at the end! A new episode posted at least twice a month! Ep. 94: Shredding The Tomb - How Low Can You Go?

Ep. 94: Shredding The Tomb - How Low Can You Go?

In this week’s episode, we bow down as low as we can get to the almighty bass guitar heroes! The heart of rock n’ roll is the rhythm and this week we explore some of the most amazing low-frequency providers. How do they make such wonderful noise with metal wires on a piece of wood? This subject holds a very special place in Kevin’s heart, as he tries very hard to play the same instrument that we are praising this week.

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss all three. Get out your old Bass Player mags and flip the pages as we discuss some of the most amazing fingers to ever slappa da bass!
