Imagination 7-15-1969 Neville Goddard

Tonight’s subject is Imagination. You read in the 17th chapter of the book of Acts, a story of Paul coming through to the Athenians, and he calls upon these men, for he saw the inscription over and over. He said: “As I passed by…I saw [an altar with] this inscription, ‘To an unknown god.’ This therefore that you worship as unknown, [this] I proclaim unto you.” “He is not far from each of us, for in him we live and move and have our being.” (Acts 17:23, 27, 28) The great Blake said it differently. This is what Blake said: “All that you behold; though it appears without, it is within, in your Imagination, of which this World of Mortality is but a Shadow.” (“Jerusalem”)

...So, what are you imaging? You determine that. For, as I said earlier, I imagine, as do you. We cannot imagine differently. All differences lie in content. What is my response to the eternal question, “Who am I?” That response determines the conditions of my life. Am I a little unknown being, struggling for a dollar to pay rent, to buy food? Well, all right, that’s what will happen to me. And there’s no being on the outside to change it! I’ve got to bring about the change within myself. I can borrow money and beg for money and if I remain in that little concept of myself, I will be unable to pay back and will always have to keep looking for someone else to borrow from while I remain in the consciousness of being a little unwanted non-entity.

Simon Lifts The Cross

I think you will find this very practical tonight. But to me the most practical book in the world is the Bible. We are told they found one whose name was Simon and they laid on him the cross to carry it behind Jesus. Well, the word Simon in scripture means “to hear with understanding and then to consent to what you have heard.” You may hear it and deny it, that’s not Simon. Simon is one who hears and consents, he agrees to what he has heard.

Now, who is Jesus, for he carries the cross behind Jesus? The gospel tells what happened in the soul of Jesus…events that were seen and heard by none save by him. Through these experiences he gained the certainty that he was the Son of God and eventually God himself. The story is told and few will accept it, for his interpretation of scripture of the secret of Messiah as against the interpretations of the priests were poles apart. But Simon understood what he heard and could follow it, and now he carries the cross. I hope tonight that everyone in this room could call himself or herself a Simon.

So, the whole story is my Self, going back towards it all, for it was in the beginning this way, but you come forward to the climax. Then it stops. Time stops, and then you move backwards to the Source, and there you are God the Father! And on the way back you tell it while you still wear a garment that is in contact with garments in this world, because when you shed this garment you’ve lost the contact. Because I will not be in contact, for my garment tomorrow is that Garment that is perfect. Wherever I AM, everything is perfect. There’s no reason for any argument, for that Body that you will wear in the Resurrection is a perfect body. And nothing is dead in your world; nothing can be imperfect in your world. Everything is perfect wherever you are. That is the Resurrection Body, and that is spoken of in Scripture as the “Kingdom of Heaven.” So, the Kingdom of Heaven is not a place, it’s not a realm; it is a body!

The Morning Star 1970

Tonight is a bit of a riddle, but you listen carefully, for it’s very, very important. It is “The Morning Star,” a promise made to man. “He who conquers ... I will give him the morning star.” (Revelation 2:26, 28 RSV )

Then, in a realization of this promise, he identifies himself as the morning star. He says, “I AM the root and the offspring of David, the bright morning star.” (Revelation 22:16 RSV) The Bible ends on this note, in the last chapter of the book of Revelation. So, he tells you that he is “the root and the offspring of David, that He is the Morning Star,” that which he promised to the man who conquers.

A Riddle

Tonight we will take a riddle. We are so accustomed to this strange, false, secular interpretation of scripture that we do not realize how daring it is. It is not history as the world understands it. It hasn’t a thing to do with the drama on earth; it’s all about the soul, the reality of man. So the question is asked in the 30th chapter of the Book of Proverbs, “Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name? Surely you know!” (30:4). So do we know? That’s the beginning of the riddle. It’s a challenge and only the indolent mind would fail to accept the challenge.

We speak in the Bible of repentance, and the world thinks that it means to regret, to be remorseful. That’s not what the Bible teaches. Prayer and repentance are almost synonymous terms. We are told to bear fruit that befits repentance. Then they say of the central character of the Scripture: “You and your disciples eat and drink with sinners.” And he replied, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

Leave the righteous alone. They are so self-satisfied. They like themselves, so leave them alone. The word “sin” hasn’t a thing to do with breaking any moral code. The word “sin” means to miss the mark. That’s what it means. You have a goal in life and you haven’t achieved it, well then, you are sinning. You may have a billion dollars, and still are hungry for another. Well then, if you don’t have the other, you are sinning.

You may keep all the so-called codes of the world imposed upon you by the priesthoods of the world—that would mean nothing as far as the Scriptures go. To repent is simply a radical change of attitude. That is what repentance means. For if I radically change my attitude towards life, I will then view the world and see the world from that change of attitude. And that change is a change of consciousness, and that change will be externalized in my world. Now, repentance is at once man’s responsibility and a gift of God. Now, let us show you what I mean by it.

The subject is concerning the making of things in this world. There is a Maker and we are called upon to test this Maker. That which appears as made points to an activity that does not appear. As we are told, “What we see was made out of things which do not appear” (Heb. 11:3).

Now, I am asked to test this principle. So in Paul’s letter to the Corinthians he said, “Test yourselves”…first of all, “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are holding to your faith. Test yourselves. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test” (2 Cor. 13:5). So tonight we want to test this principle, for he tells us that “By him all things were made and without him was not anything made that was made” (Jn. 1:3). And this presence that makes everything is within us. Now I must find him and put him to the test, for I’m called upon to test him. It didn’t say he makes only the good but everything—good, bad or indifferent.

So I must now really test him, this presence. I tell you I have tested him and I know who he is. He is my own wonderful human Imagination.

God Is The Great Artist

God is the great artist and there is no artistry so loving but that which perfects its work through ages in the making of its image. God has but one consuming objective: to make his image…making his image in us to reflect himself and to radiate his glory.

Now, on this level, he exists here as our own wonderful human Imagination. All things exist in the human Imagination, because the human Imagination is the divine body called the Lord Jesus. That is God. On the highest level his artistry is towards the making of his image. On this level we’re asked to do something similar…and so I say to a friend, what would you like to be? And he answers, “Well, I would like to be a doctor.” All right, that’s an image. And you, “A business man.” And you…and then he names this, that and the other. Well, we, too, are the artists lowered to this level. For we are the artist on the highest level making ourselves the image, which would radiate and reflect the glory of the being that we really are who is God. But while we are there on this level, we simply single out what we would like to be.

The Original Sin

Tonight’s subject is “The Original Sin.” Undoubtedly you’ve heard time and again that it’s some sex violation. It hasn’t a thing to do with sex. It’s ancient, yes, but not a thing to do with sex. The Bible is a mystery. You can only understand it as it is revealed to you or believe it when you are told it by one to whom it has been revealed. It’s not a book that you just pick up and read as you would a novel. As we know, there are sixty-six books and you would start at taking Genesis and go through Revelation, and say that’s the way that it’s done. Because that’s not the way the Bible really is presented.

All the attributes of mind are personified in the Bible, and you and I take them as persons, and they’re not persons. All the characters are simply personifications of attributes of mind, eternal states of consciousness. So we must find out the first state that appeared in the Bible. What is that first state? For it is against that state which is the ideal that man has sinned.

Sin means “to miss the mark,” or I could disbelieve it or I am ignorant of it. And these are different levels of sinning: To know it and not to heed it is the most serious state; to hear of it and disbelieve it, that is a secondary state; never to have heard of it, that is not really a severe case. Yet all carry with it certain responsibilities. So we must search the Bible for this initial state that was presented to man. Man heard it but didn’t believe it; man heard it and believed it but didn’t quite find it; and man never heard of it.

Tonight’s subject is “What are you Sowing?” We’re told in scripture, “Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that also will he reap” (Gal. 6:7). Here we have the law of identical harvest: As you sow, so you reap, and the harvest is always the multiplication of the identical seed. We are told, “While the earth is yours, seedtime and harvest…shall not cease” (Gen. 8:22). Now tonight, you be the judge of the seed that you will plant. I’ll try to show you how to plant it. You have to feel the feeling in your mind; you plant it right here. It may not be cultivated, not be prepared to receive the seed, but you can pick the seed and then plant it.

Now the individual himself must accept the burden of the incarnation of his dream. The dream is always ready to be incarnated, but unless we, ourselves, offer it human parentage it is incapable of birth. It can’t be born of itself; it has to be born through man. So when Blake spoke of the combats of good and evil as eating of the tree of knowledge, and the combats of truth and error were eating of the tree of life, he said, “There isn’t an error in the world that it has a man as its agent, that is, it is a man; there isn’t a truth but it has as its agent a man, therefore, it is man.” So man is not only the field, he is the sower. He selects the seed and then he plants it on himself, and whatever he plants he is going to bring forth if he doesn’t modify the seed. He’ll bring forth, well, thirty, sixty or 100-fold. If he accepts it completely, he’ll bring 100-fold. If he modifies it because he can’t quite believe in such a vast dream coming true, well, then he’ll modify it. He’ll bring forth according to what he has accepted as true.

In the 64th chapter of the Book of Isaiah we read, “O Lord, thou art our Father; we are the clay. Thou art our potter; we are all the work of thy hand” (64:8). Well, when you read it you might think, “All right, O Lord” and you think of another. Then you say, “Thou art our Father”…that’s the same other. We are but clay and thou art our potter. Well, it’s identified with the Lord and with the Father, so you think also of another, and we’re all the work of thy hand.

The word “potter” by definition simply means “Imagination.” The word “Lord” is Yod He Vau He, which is defined for us as I AM. You mean that my own wonderful I-am-ness is the Lord, is my Father, and is my potter? That I am actually shaping myself and shaping my world? Yes, that is exactly what it means, that the Father is the Lord and the Lord is the potter shaping my entire world. But I am the shaper shaping it into a form, molding it into a form. Now, can I prove it? Am I really all Imagination as everyone who has experienced it knows? That “Man is all Imagination and God is man, and exists in us and we in him…that the eternal body of man is the Imagination, and that really is God himself”

This is a rare lecture I only recently discovered that is a new addition to the pantheon.  The J,E, And P Manuscripts is a the name of the unknown authors of genesis. It is an odd name for the lecture as he really does not talk about it too much but there is a lot here

"I think you’ll find tonight very interesting. In the Book of Genesis which begins one of the manuscripts…there are three that we have, the J, the E and the P manuscripts. That’s all the authors that we know of, and no one knows who they are. Scholars claim all kinds of things for these initials, but regardless of that, tonight we will begin with the E, which begins with the 15th chapter of Genesis. It doesn’t mention the first fourteen. And here is the story, “As the sun was going down, Abram fell into a deep sleep; and a dread and great darkness fell upon him. The Lord said to him, ‘Know for a surety that your descendants will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs, and they will be slaves there, and they will be oppressed for four hundred years… and after that they will come out with great possessions’” (Gen.15:12). Abram believed and it was accounted unto him as righteousness."

I think you will find this hour a very practical hour and yet a very spiritual hour. We are told in the Book of Romans, Paul’s letter to the Romans, the very first chapter that all the invisible things of God are clearly seen being understood by the things that are made (1:20).

So man is called upon to look at the made and then to discover the invisible God. All of the invisible things of him are clearly seen, and how do I know? Well, I look at the things that are made…and I begin to reflect upon what I did. For here I find myself in a world and am I really responsible? I try to find out why. I look at all the things round about me and finally I come upon a certain thought. You know, when there was not a thing in the world to support my belief, I began to believe that one day I would experience this…and then I experienced it. So I relate the things seen to the unseen. Could that be God?

Well now, Paul tells us in the very next verse, “Although they knew God they did not honor him as God.” Oh, I found the relationship between the things seen and the unseen reality, the imaginal act, but I did not honor him as God.

And then I turned to images resembling man and I thought man on the outside was the cause, because he seemed to aid me in bringing this to pass. I turn and I exchange the immortal God for images resembling man. Or I might have turned to other images, that of a man, not only a man but that of a reptile, that of an animal, that of a bird, and I turn to these and think that they are the cause of my good fortune or misfortune.

And I gave up the truth about God for a lie, and began to worship and serve the thing created instead of the Creator; for I could relate the outer world in which I live to an imaginal activity within myself. Then I knew that that was the cause of it; for if God is the cause of everything in the world and I discover how it happened and then I will not accept the fact, I do not honor him as God.

In the nature of things, it is impossible for any child born of woman to go unredeemed. When I say “I am,” I am proclaiming all that is divine in my flesh. How then can God cast away that which is the “I” in me, the “I” that constitutes me? He will be casting away himself as useless, and that is impossible. Does it teach this in scripture? Yes it does. All the little statements in scripture, all the little stories are parables.

The life of Christ is a parable. We must distinguish between the story as it is told and the message that it intends to tell. So we are told in the 18th chapter of the gospel of Matthew: “And calling a child, he put him into the midst of them…See that no one despises these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven always they behold the face of my Father who is in heaven” (Mat.18:1,10).
