SECRET WARS II #3: "This World Is Mine"

SECRET WARS II #3: "This World Is Mine"

This week The Beyonder takes over the whole world - but can that satisfy him? We also have a mixed bag of crossover comics; there's Derek's favorite ever issue of The Incredible Hulk and there's an issue of Daredevil that saw Denny O'Neil quit the book. It's a mess, but is it purposefully recalling the temptation of Christ in the desert?

Next week: the Beyonder tries to understand love. We have some crossover action again, but be aware: there is one crossover comic that is hard to find. It's not on the Marvel Unlimited app because it's Rom: Space Knight, which was a licensed book. But fear not, we have a link to where you can read the issue.

    This week's homework:
    Secret Wars II #4
    Alpha Flight #28
    Avengers #261
    Dazzler #40
    Rom #72

That Rom comic can be found right here. And if you like it, be aware that Marvel struck a deal with Hasbro and they will be releasing a Rom omnibus in the future! Look out for it.

SECRET WARS II #2: "I'll Take Manhattan!"

SECRET WARS II #2: "I'll Take Manhattan!"

When is a crossover not a crossover? When it happens in only one panel of the comic book in question, I'd say.

This week we follow the Beyonder to New York City, where he bumbles around and learns to poop. Then we get two fantastic Spider-Man crossover comics and a Fantastic Four issue that is, crossover or not, just kind of bad.

Next week: the Beyonder takes over the world! Here's your homework:

    Secret Wars II #3
    Avengers #260
    Daredevil #223
    The Incredible Hulk #312

    SECRET WARS II #1: "Earthfall"

    SECRET WARS II #1: "Earthfall"

This week we're doing a big pivot. Now that Secret Invasion has finished we have decided to not return to X-Men: The Animated Series just yet. Instead we're going to spend the next few weeks reading Secret Wars II and all of the associate crossovers. Yes, it's a trip back to 1985 to talk about the granddaddy of all crossover event series. Secret Wars II is weird and shaggy and an awful lot of fun, even if it isn't exactly one of the great comic book storylines.

    This week we cover:
    Secret Wars II #1
    New Mutants #30
    Captain America #308
    Uncanny X-Men #196
    Iron Man #197
All of these are available on Marvel Unlimited with a subscription.

These crossovers really run the gamut from making Secret Wars II the main focus to almost totally ignoring the events of the comic. And they run the gamut from great to kind of dull, and also Kitty Pryde says the N word. Seriously.

Thanks for listening! Join the Patreon at www.patreon.com/cinemasangha to get access to our Discord; at the $5 level you'll get our Watch Men podcast - this month we will have two episodes, one about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and one about Blue Beetle. Don't miss them!

Talking Comics Podcast: Issue #608: John Jacob Barbenheimer Schmidt

In this episode, Bob builds a bomb, Barbie cruises into the podcast in a pink convertible, a robot monster invades, Aaron gets X-rated, and Steve becomes trapped in a Vicious Circle. Confused? So are we! Let's solve the mystery together!

Books: New Mutants: Lethal Legion #5, X-Men Red #13, A Vicious Circle #2, Hawkgirl #1, Blade #1, Harley Screws Up The DCU #5, Poison Ivy Uncovered (one-shot)

Other Stuff, Barbie, Oppenheimer, Robot Monster 3D, A Bell in the Fog (novel)

Mutant May: New Mutants: The Vita Aliya Run Part 2

Mutant May: New Mutants: The Vita Aliya Run Part 2

The gang finishes the Vita Ayala Run of New Mutants with Issues 19-24. The two teams unite to defeat the Shadow King and free Amal Farouk. Rahne's storyline is still bad, Karma gets a girlfriend that isn't Dani, there are jarring artist changes, and we get frequently sidetracked. Happy early pride and ACAB!

    Episodes We Mentioned:
Mutant May: New Mutants: The Vita Ayala Run Part 1
Mutant May: New Mutants: Dead Souls
    Mutant May: The New Mutants

Mutant May: New Mutants: The Vita Ayala Run Part 1

For the second episode of Marika Mutant May, the gang chats about one of Marika’s favorite New Mutants runs. Cork and Bret are forced to deal with Rahne’s poor writing again.  Dani and Karma should be gay. We have no idea how old Anole is and struggle to understand mutant religious practices.

    Episodes We Mentioned:
    Mutant May: Marauders (2019)
Mutant May: New Mutants: Dead Souls

Mutant May: New Mutants: Dead Souls

Marika was able to pull Cork and Bret away from Star Wars Jedi: Survivor long enough to talk about New Mutants: Dead Souls from 2018. Everybody is a monster, Rahne is poorly written, Illyana should have more piercings and tattoos. Cork makes some very good Star Wars parallels and Marika struggles to answer multiple very specific X-Men questions. Happy early Pride and ACAB!

Interview: Brian Michael Bendis - Fortune & Glory: The Musical

    1. This might be kismet this interview is taking place today, because I'm literally 6 days from traveling to London to see the Back to the Future musical! Were you a fan of musicals before turn of the dark, and then after?
    2. Fortune and Glory is a book I read and cherished when I went to college for screenwriting in the early 2000s. It was not only entertaining, but was enlightening about Hollywood and that industry. How much can fans expect from you as far as helpful tips for writing and your process?
    3. Having had a chance to read some of the sequel, I have to say your voice as yourself is incredibly entertaining. Do you find talking as yourself as an easy thing to do in a comics format, maybe that's what you were already doing with Spider-Man and Superman?
    4. You're releasing Fortune and Glory: The Musical over your substack, with a print edition from Dark Horse in the future, about how many months will you be releasing chapters?
    5. You drew Fortune and Glory, what made Bill Walko the right choice to draw the sequel?
    6. How has it been working with Daniel Chabon who is editing the sequel?
    7. When writing about your own life, how tempted are you to punch up the moments and make them bigger than they might have been?
    8. Hollywood, broadway, what will the third book be about? What's left!?
