#34. Data Kitchens and Tech Transitions with Matt McMullen

#34. Data Kitchens and Tech Transitions with Matt McMullen

    Summary
In this conversation, Matthew discusses his background in private equity and his transition into the tech industry. He explains the concept of data preparation to a five-year-old and shares his first professional experience with AI. Matthew also talks about his involvement with Next Step and Africa AI, as well as his current work at Cogito Tech. He emphasizes the importance of compliance and governance in the data industry and discusses the potential impact of a higher minimum wage on the AI industry. Matthew draws inspiration from the sales and UI industries and shares advice for his younger self.

    Takeaways

    • Data preparation can be compared to setting up stations in a kitchen and organizing ingredients before cooking a meal.
    • Transitioning from private equity to tech requires a shift in focus from managing multiple companies to dedicating oneself to one company.
    • The impact of AI regulations on sales cycles emphasizes the need for more consultative and involved sales approaches.
    • Compliance and governance are crucial in the data industry, and companies like Cogito Tech are working to provide transparency and best practices.
    • Drawing inspiration from the sales and UI industries can provide valuable insights for managing teams and launching successful products.

The Yonder Boys are finally back! So much to talk about but we kept it to a quick-moving 50 mins for your listening pleasure — featuring one of the most fascinating interviews yet on this show. You won't want to miss it.
We start off recounting Geoffrey's recent trip to Brussels (02:00) and how he found their urban mobility, both so much more advanced than US cities, and yet, not all the romantic, bike-loving people he had dreamed.
This episode's news starts with a recap of the biggest headline from COP28 (05:10). We then chat about EV manufacturers putting out misleading (dare we say, 'deceptive') range claims on their big trucks (08:00). And lastly, kudos to Detroit, and their one-mile of wireless charging infrastructure (11:20)
Our guest, Shirin Oreizy (14:30), founder and CEO of NextStep explains how people make decisions (specifically around social responsibility) and how we might use behavioral science to move the needle in the right direction.
We wrap this episode with a rant on all the benefits of a 15-minute city (41:30) and the conspiracy theories that intrinsically come with it - WTAF?
Get your long over-due dose of Yonder Boys banter while it's hot!

Future Social Worker Sharde Fultz Pays It Forward

Future Social Worker Sharde Fultz Pays It Forward

We first met the incredible Sharde Fultz in our very first season of Marrow Masters,  back in 2019.  We wanted to reconnect with her as one our our "survivors who thrive" this season.

In 2009, Sharde was a college student, living on campus as a dance major with big dreams. Then she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.  Following chemotherapy and radiation, Sharde received an an allogeneic bone marrow transplant in 2011.  Having to leave school, she immersed herself in online support forums for young adult cancer patients.

When Sharde returned to school, between her recovery and chronic GVHD, she had to come to terms with some physical limitations.  While she still had a passion for dance, she'd need to pivot.   Her time interacting with fellow cancer survivors really sparked something in her.   She wanted to be able to related to not just other patients, but also people who looked like her.   She could fight against some of the inequities in our health care system.

Sharde connected with an organization called Next Step, which sends people on "campferences" - part camp, part conference.  She attended a campference in 2010, and now works for the organization.  Speaking engagements turned into a facilitator role for young adult cancer camps.  She's now the conference director, and is working toward a degree in social work.

Sharde's advice for fellow cancer survivors is to change how you think about time, and don't compare your journey to anyone else's progress.

    7.2.2023 - What's Your Next Step?

We all have next step in our spiritual walks. God meets us where we are, but God refuses to leave us there. Like Abraham being called out of the familiar land that he knew, or like Sarah for receiving the promise to have a child at her age, or like Rahab for being hospitable to the spies, or like Peter stepping out of the comfort of the boat to walk on the water - we all have a next step. So, the question today is: what is your next step? Where might God be calling you?

🏃‍♀️”If God is clearly telling me to do something, I’m going to take that step of faith.”

🎁”What are you gifted in? What are our strengths? What is your passion? How can you use it for God’s glory & what’s the next step?”

🟢”We think we have to have it all figured out - well if we have it all figured out - what glory is that to God?”

🚦”Go make a move! I dare you! Go make a move!”

🏃‍♀️”When we follow Jesus there is a true call to follow Him. There’s also a cost- people don’t want to talk about that as much, but there is a necessity to lay down things that no longer serve us.”

🗣”We’ve got to get serious about learning the voice of God.”

🚦”Let’s go! Stop waiting for other people to do it - let’s go!”

🌎 “We have a hurting world that is ready for people to love on them.”

🗣”God’s voice is never going to take us to our own comfort and ease. God’s voice is always going to stretch us.”

🏃‍♀️”In Jewish tradition to hear something is not simply to listen, mull it over in your head, and see what happens - to hear the voice of God & be impacted doesn’t happen until it’s walked out.”

🏃‍♀️”What do you need to do in order to walk it out? It comes true as you’re doing it - not as you’re thinking about it.”

❤️”Do something & learn more about who our God is.”

E56: Find God's Purpose in Your Projects

E56: Find God's Purpose in Your Projects

You know I love a good project and a good plan. But sometimes, we get caught up in checking off the tasks and lose sight of what God is trying to do. In Episode 56 of Just One Simple Thing, we’ll learn to find God’s purpose in our plans.

Welcome, friends! I’m so glad to have you hanging out with me today as we talk about two of my favorite things ... projects and plans.

In his book, Getting Things Done, David Allen defines a project as anything that takes more than one action to complete. So almost EVERYTHING is a project! Which makes my project manager heart so happy.

Over the next few episodes, we’ll talk about some tips and tools you can use to complete your projects. But before we do, let’s talk about why it’s so important to complete our projects well. Friend, God has a profound purpose for yourvery practical projects.

Sometimes, he shows you that purpose before your start. Sometimes, you discover it along the way. And other times, you don’t really understand what he is up to until long after the project is complete.

God gave Noah a big project ... build an ark and repopulate the earth.

God said to Noah, “I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you.” Gen 6:18. For Noah, it was all about saving his family.

Nehemiah thought God was sending him to rebuild a wall. But when he got there, Nehemiah found not only a broken wall, but a broken people.

So as he was leading them to rebuild the wall, he was also leading them to rebuild their confidence and their identity as God’s chosen people. And being the great leader that he was, Nehemiah was able to steward both parts of his projects well.

Joseph had a big project ... save Egypt from a famine.

Says in Gen. 41that he stored up so much grain, he stopped even trying to keep up with how much he had. Not only did he have enough grain to save Egypt from the famine, but he had enough for the surrounding countries as well.

What if Joseph had only completed his project halfway? His brothers would not have come to Egypt to get grain, and they may never have reunited. Because Joseph executed his practical project well, God was able to complete his profound purpose.

So as we get wrapped up in our projects, checking the boxes and closing out the Trello boards, let’s keep our hearts and minds open to God’s profound purpose. Even the smallest, most mundane two-step projects can be used in ways we can’t imagine. So let’s do them well.

    ACTION STEP:
Look at the projects you have on your plate. Can you see God’s profound purpose in them? Watch for the Lord to start revealing more about His purpose as you cross things off the list. Be sure to join me in the next episode when I’ll share some tips for breaking your projects down into small steps so you can make a plan to get them done. You’ll learn the process and the tools I use for all of my projects. So if you haven’t already, follow the podcast where ever you listen so you don’t miss a thing.

TPP #31 | Does God Care about Design with Ann Ueno

TPP #31 | Does God Care about Design with Ann Ueno

Miami-based Interior Designer, Ann Ueno was completely self-taught and early on felt a calling to home design. After spending nights and weekends doing this on the side for friends and family, Ann left the corporate.  By stepping into her own interior design business, Ann's faith was built brick by brick, and realized that God cares about her heart and business.

If anyone thinks that God doesn't care about design. He has been caring about the details and the design of my business and of the people that work for me and of the clients we get to pray over [the whole time].

God is the ultimate designer of our life. As her personal life imploded less than 2 years ago, God continued to build her faith and her business. The pain allowed her to draw near to Him and hear what He desires for her. Even in the suffering, Ann has chosen not to be afraid of the pain anymore. Hardship has given her purpose in her life.

There is such great wisdom and hope in her parable story and I hope you enjoy this conversation with the lovely, Ann Ueno.

    Reflection Questions:
    1. Does your home reflect your authentic self?

    2. Let's look for places we can take the next step this week and offer whatever that is up to God

Are You Qualified? (Part 1 of 2)

Are You Qualified? (Part 1 of 2)
Part 1 of a two-part mini series on finding the job you want. In this episode, we discuss the gap between our skills and the qualifications a job "requires." Have you heard the study that says women feel the need to meet 9 out of 10 job qualifications before they submit an application? The study goes on to say that men will submit even if they only meet 2 or 3. Why is that? And how do we get qualified for a job we haven't done? In this episode, we discuss the article "You Don't Need to Meet Every Qualification to Apply for a Job" featured in Harvard Business Review.
