The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E13

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E13

S6E13 kicked off at 19h00 sharp on 30 March 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio.  The show started a bit differently with a track called ‘City Lights’ by Motionless In White, from there normality was restored with Scorpions and Motörhead.  We went back to Germany for 'Buck Dich' from Rammstein and then shifted to the USA for some Aerosmith, and a track on the Get a Grip album titled 'Walk on Down'.   Follow the list below for the deatils.

In terms of highlights we had the brand new Metallica, title track of their forthcoming album 72 Seasons.  It is wonderful, if you don’t like it then I gotta say maybe you never liked really liked Metallica, maybe you should admit they are just not for you.  The weekly interview was with Ross Harding and it was very cool to catch up with him and discuss his brand new track ‘Everything is Black’.  The Ultimate Challenge this week looked at 4 albums from 2000.  The candidates were Iron Maiden – Brave New World, Linkin Park – Hybrid Theory, Disturbed – The Sickness, and In Flames – Clayman.  Iron Maiden was the clear winner this week, Hybrid Theory did next best.  The Immortals slot was awarded to Judas Priest and we basked in the glow of ‘Victim of Changes’.

The Punk part was filled by The Stranglers, Sex Pistols and UK Subs, this to celbrate my brand new Stranglers T-Shirt, this is a bucket list shirt and the story behind it is buried near the end of the show.  We went out heavy with Dark Tranquility and Parkway Drive.

Artists featured:  Motionless In White, Scorpions, Motörhead, Rammstein, Aerosmith, Nickelback, Volbeat, Buckcherry, The Rolling Stones, The Black Crowes, Nita Strauss & Alice Cooper, Hatebreed, Metallica, Hellfighter, Queensrÿche, The Longshot, The L.A. Maybe, Jimi Hendrix, Dan Patlansky, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, John Mellencamp, Ross Harding, Dave Hause, Annihilator, Rival Sons, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Linkin Park, Disturbed, In Flames, The Stranglers, Sex Pistols, U.K. Subs, Fokofpolisiekar, Kid Rock, Ozzy Osbourne, Dark Tranquillity, Parkway Drive

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E4

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E4

Episode 4 of the brand new Season 6 kicked off at precisely 19h00 on 26 Jan 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio.  First up was a band who are no strangers to TSORR, Great White with ‘Never Trust a Pretty Face’.  We had a nice up-tempo start cycling through Motor Sister, and Accept and then took a huge step back into the past with the ever-fresh sound of Creedence Clearwater Revival and ‘Green River’, from there we went to Aussie for some Cold Chisel and a track called ‘Misfits’.  We stayed there for Airborne and moved on to Tesla via Halestorm and a track called Legendary which of course she is. Lzzy Hale is the real deal.  The Tesla track was ‘Gettin’ Better’ off the RePlugged Live album which is amazing.  Tesla fans check it out.

Black Star Riders (without Scott Gorham) released a new album last week called Wrong Side of Paradise, we listened to the title track.  It’s one of those that fall into the ‘Songs that could be about South Africa’ category.  Talking of that we also had ‘Losing More Than You Ever Had’ (Accept) and ‘Stand & Deliver (Airbourne) as further examples.   Def Leppard’s colossal breakthrough album Pyromania turned 40 this week and KISS main man Paul Stanley turned 70.  We celebrated with Rock, Rock (Till You Drop), and Love Gun’ respectively.

'Peace is Free’ from Black stone Cherry calmed things down a bit, and we stayed calm with ‘Soul’ from 12th Avenue and wished Mark Haze, vocalist extraordinaire who formed 12th Avenue,  a speedy recovery from the back-op he had this week.  Linkin Park with ‘One Step Closer’ sounded great and then we got to Megadeth with 'Life in Hell' off their latest album and a brand new track from Metallica called ‘Screaming Suicide’.  TSORR predicts that 2023 will be Metallica's year.  They seem to have hit a sweet spot and are feeling the love and appreciation of the people of Planet Earth.  The South African stuff was, as we say in these parts, 'poes heavy'.  Kill Frenzy out of Cape Town and Diverted Disorder from the Vaal gave us our weekly dose of Linda take a walk music.  Check out both bands if you dig the heavier stuff.

This week's Immortal track came from Led Zep with 'Since I've Been Loving You' off Led Zeppelin III.  We had UK Punk courtesy of Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, and Stiff Little Fingers which led us to U2 with 'I Will Follow'.  Prepare to hear a lot of U2, I am busy with Bono’s book Surrender, it is a great read.  Even if you are not a fan it is so rich with descriptions of the times, places, and characters of the times that it is well worth delving into.  the Audible version brings it all to life.  We ended with Slayer and another song that could be about South Africa called 'Seasons In the Abyss'.

Artists featured:  Great White, Jorn, Motor Sister, Accept, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Cold Chisel, Airbourne, Ratt, Halestorm, Nickelback, Tesla, John Mellencamp, Black Star Riders. Phil X & the Drills, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, KISS, The Black Crowes, White Zombie, Emigrate, Glenn Hughes, Black Stone Cherry, 12th Avenue, Linkin Park, Megadeth, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, The Stranglers, U2, Me and That Man, Kill Frenzy, Diverted Disorder, Piet Botha, Windowpane, Slayer.

The cigarette pact.  If you're in NYC- put out the butt!  If you're outside of NYC, you are legally obligated to get emphysema.  Preach.  We hope you're having a nice time, are you letting your light shine?  Are you letting your candle burn?  Is your refrigerator running?  Alright, but for real.  The guys talk about showtime- how do you liked to be danced at?  Max got into a twitter fight with a real alpha and confirmed Max's status as a certified, low level, young beta.  Supposedly, America is in good shape.  Nice.  Sigma Men: Alpha Males For People That Don't Know How to Talk to People.  Mahalo.  All respect to China.  Michael's show airs next month and I think we can say..... The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E52

Finally, we reached the end of Season 5.  The final show, episode 52 went out live at 19h00 on 29 Dec 2022 on rebel Rock Radio.  At the risk of boring you all I just have to say that once again it all happened under really trying circumstances.  I hope you all appreciate the lengths I have to go through to get this show out.  The Wi-Fi has been non-existent all day, I can’t even upload the MCR Rock Review.  We have more load shedding in an hour's time and I can’t get onto the Rebel Rock Site so I am flying blind.  That said this show is a wrap-up of all the albums we checked out this year.  Well, not all the albums because we checked out 65 new releases this year.  Out of 157 albums added this year 65 were 2022 releases.  I did my best to play you as much as possible from these 65.

We kicked off with Halestorm and the title track of their release Back From The Dead.  From there we had Motor Sister and a track called 'Can’t Get Enough'.  From there we listened to ‘Take What You Want’ off Diamond Star Halos, the latest offering from Def Leppard.  We went to Germany and took a listen to Rammstein and to Sinner.  Desolation Angels out of the UK (with South African bassist Clive Pearson who used to be in a SA Metal band called Lynx back in the ‘80s) gave us a track called 'Walking On Water' off Burning Black.  We also heard from Tony Martin ex Black Sabbath and Joe Lynn Turner ex Rainbow.  Both these guys both put out strong albums in the form of Thorns and Belly of the Beast respectively.

Five Finger Death Punch and Disturbed both made the cut and sounded awesome.  It was time for a bit of Metal from Soulfly and a track called 'Ancestors'.  We also heard 'Black Butterfly' from Candlemass.  After checking out some late ‘80’s early ‘90s style rock from the Dead Daisies, Skid Row, and Aussie youngsters Dead City Ruins we hit the blues with our very own Dan Patlansky whose Shelter of Bones was given the No 2 spot by Blues Rock Magazine.  The South African scene was also represented by L.A. Cobra, The Devil’s Party Band, Infanteria, and Diverted Disorder.

Finally, we got to the top of the list and played out with Ozzy Osbourne, Parkway Drive, The Halo Effect, and Megadeth, and the best album of 2022 according to me went to Arch Enemy with Deceivers.  We had a few minutes left so we checked out with scenes from forthcoming attraction in 2023 in the form of Blink 182 and the single they dropped months ago called ‘Edging’.  I hope to see you all for 2023 and Season 6 of The Story of Rock and Roll.

PS.  Notable mentions we just didn’t get to Keator, Slipknot, Soilwork, Ghost, and Machine Head, what a year for music.

Artists featured:  Halestorm, Herman Frank, Motor Sister, Def Leppard, Sinner, Rammstein, Joe Lynn Turner, Nickelback, Desolation Angels, Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, Eddie Vedder, Billy Idol, Alter Bridge, Tony Martin, Candlemass, Soulfly, The Dead Daisies, Skid Row, Dead City Ruins, Dan Patlansky, L.A. Cobra, Scorpions, Kid Rock, Hell Fire, Infanteria, Sakis Tolis, The Devil’s Party Band, Diverted Disorder, Queensrÿche, Ozzy Osbourne, Parkway Drive, The Halo Effect, Megadeth, Arch Enemy

2002: Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head / Most Polarizing Bands

What makes for a polarizing band? Does Coldplay fit description for you? While being one of the world's biggest bands, they definitely have some haters as well. But back when A Rush of Blood to the Head came out, they were hugely popular. Listen as we remember how this album fit into our mid 20's as we go song by song. If you happen to be a hater, we may just alter your opinion a little bit. Who knows?

We then get into a discussion of bands that we love to hate...or hate to love...or seem like a joke, yet are still popular. Any way you cut it, they are polarizing. Do you think Nickelback will be mentioned? Listen now. Set your Clocks, as you are In your Place.

    91. Fall Out Boy's new guitar-based music put on hold? + We’ve been saying Chad Kroeger’s name wrong this whole time

This week, some of the things Tyler and John talk about include the new The Wonder Years album. One person loves it, the other not so much. They also discuss Mariah Carey possibly looking to release her long-lost grunge album. And it looks like everyone's been saying Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger’s name wrong the whole time. Also, Fall Out Boy’s Joe Trohman reveals that the band began working on “guitar-based” music, but is now on the “back-burner”. So what does that mean for the band? And finally, a computer has found what the most iconic song ever recorded is. Here’s a hint: it’s a rock song. Make sure to stay until the end because you'll hear John's cat break his TV.
