Ep 58: Lost forever in a Deep Freeze - The Terror & The Erebus

Today, we travel to the Northwest Passage - a route from Europe OVER Canada and on to Asia (and all the spices that come with that). Many tried and failed, but the most spectacular and haunting failure is that of the HMSs Terror and Erebus. The ships set sail in 1845 and were never seen again. From what we know, the crews were sick from scurvy, lead poisoning, and from being stuck in the ice for a year and a half. Eventually, the crew walked into the great white wilderness and disappeared into history, never to return home or complete their mission.

The good news is that since the ice caps are melting, it's now quite an easy journey!

    The Lost Franklin Expedition

    The Lost Franklin Expedition

Join Kelli as she explains what happened to the Terror and Erebus, the doomed ships of Captain Sir John Franklin's 1945 expedition, where all 134 men perished, most of whom were never found. The bones and artifacts left behind tell a chilling story of how far some men will go to survive - even if all hope is lost.

Standing on Beechey island, a peninsula off Devon Island in the Canadian Arctic, are four lonely graves: three members of an ill-fated expedition to the Northwest Passage, and one of the men who went looking for them. In 1845, Sir John Franklin led an expedition to find the Northwest Passage, a direct route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean across the arctic, on two ships that were called "unstoppable" at the time. They were stopped, though the exact circumstances remain murky.

The story of the graves is chronicled on the Atlas Obscura Podcast, a short, daily celebration of the world's strange and wondrous places. The podcast has a mission similar to 99pi, which is to inspire wonder and curiosity about the world.  Today we're featuring two stories from the show.

The second story visits the Unclaimed Baggage Center in Scottsboro, Alabama, which bills itself as "the nation's only retailer of lost luggage." If you've ever lost a bag during air travel, it probably wound up there, along with many other treasures and oddities.

Fettes Talks Adventure: with Old Fettesian, Mark Agnew

Mark Agnew is an adventurer and a journalist. At 30 years old Mark has already had two endeavours at rowing the Atlantic.  Mark is now attempting the 'last great first', the Northwest Passage.  Rowing 2,500 miles over 2 months as a crew of 8 from the Atlantic to the Pacific. We talked to Mark to find out more about his forthcoming expedition avoiding  ice flows, rocks and polar bears from Pond Inlet in Canada to Point Barrow in Alaska. Hear his thoughts on the challenges that he will face: sleep deprivation; exertion; cold and damp. The strengths that he will need: trust; fitness; resilience; humility and mental fitness. Mark talks of his beginnings, his childhood, his passion for rugby, the joy of achieving team goals and the spirit of friendship.  Mark was at Fettes from 2005-2009.
Mark's expedition is due to begin in July once the ice has melted and the Northwest Passage is open.  His progress can be followed on this link. We wish Mark and the team every success.

Ep. 8: Freezing to death (Franklin Expedition Part 2)

This is part two of my conversation with curator Karen Ryan about the Franklin Expedition. Part one sets up the expedition, this one shows how it all went wrong. Almost 200 years later, why should we still care about Franklin? Oh, Neptune also makes an appearance once again.
