Brett Rampal is the director of nuclear and power strategy at Veriten, a Houston-based energy advisory firm. In this episode, Brett, a nuclear engineer, talks about the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s recent approval of NuScale Power's reactor design, why the agency could soon be overwhelmed by the number of companies trying to get permits for their reactors, the emerging fuel-supply challenges, and why the “biggest opportunity for nuclear in the U.S. might be for thermal output, not electricity.” (Recorded January 25, 2023.)

Rusty Towell is a professor of engineering and physics, and the director of the NEXT Lab, at Abilene Christian University, which applied to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission last August for a construction permit that may allow it to build the first new research reactor of any kind in the U.S. in more than 30 years. In this episode, Towell walks us through the design of the molten salt reactor ACU wants to build, the hurdles it faces at the NRC, why the university may have an advantage in obtaining the enriched-uranium fuel it needs, and why, if the project succeeds, it could lead to commercial success in the small modular reactor market. Maria Korsnick holds a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Maryland and now serves as president and CEO of the Nuclear Energy Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based trade association that operates on an annual budget of about $50 million. In this episode, Korsnick talks about the “new paradigm for nuclear” energy, why the “urgency” for nuclear “is only going to grow,” how the U.S. and Canada are working together on approval of new reactor designs, and why the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has to get more efficient. Maxim Februari is schrijver en rechtsfilosoof. Hij is geïnteresseerd in de invloed van technologie op recht, politiek en bestuur. Hij schrijft romans, essays en een wekelijkse column op de opiniepagina van NRC Handelsblad. 

Violence against Muslims has escalated in different parts of the country. The recent incident of many houses belonging two Muslims in Tripura being burnt down, is the latest in a long series of attacks that begin in 2014. Add to that, the many new legislative measures to marginalize the community, such as the Citizens Amendment Act and the so-called 'Love Jihad Law' in Uttar Pradesh. The coming elections in UP may have something to do with it, but this anti-minority campaign goes much deeper than that.

On this episode, Sidharth is joined by Ghazala Wahab, Executive Editor of FORCE magazine, who just published her new book 'Born a Muslim: Some Truths About Islam in India'. The book explores some of the issues mentioned above, and brings together history, politics, and Ghazal's own personal stories. Some of the stories are quite distressing and discomforting, but they make essential reading because it gives a perspective and insight into what could happen to any Muslim - from middle-class, upper-middle class to the marginalised and the poor. The book is extremely relevant in these fraught times.
