Measuring Your Recruitment Maturity with Liza Voticky

Measuring Your Recruitment Maturity with Liza Voticky

“More often that not, talent acquisition is tucked into HR as a function that everyone has to tolerate vs. a strategic arm of the organization.”
    -Liza Voticky

Without the right people in the right place at the right time, your organization cannot meet its objectives.   Today’s guest approaches the discipline of Talent Acquisition as a strategic and essential function vs. a necessary evil that should be done as cheaply as possible.

My guest is Liza Voticky. Liza began her career in Toronto, Canada as a Staffing Specialist for a temporary staffing service.  She successfully developed through various roles in staffing, national sales, operations, communications, and senior management.  Liza continued to grow her career through leadership roles in Recruitment Process Outsourcing, supporting teams in the USA and Canada.  After 5 years as an RPO provider, Liza kicked off her corporate leadership work with Coca-Cola Enterprises. At Coca-Cola, she built a recruiting team from the ground up, implementing a total transformation of the hiring processes across Canada.  Promoted to Vice President of TA, North America based in Atlanta, Liza was responsible for multiple re-organizations as the company transformed its North American business model.

After nine successful years with the Coca-Cola Organization, she moved to Miami, FL. where she joined Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines as the Head of Global Talent Acquisition, Shipboard & Shoreside.  During her time with RCCL, Liza was responsible for completely transforming and optimizing the global recruiting process for approximately 25,000 hires annually from 120 different countries. This included leading Talent Marketing, Talent Attraction Operations, and candidate experience.

Today, Liza is the CEO and Founding Partner of MXA Talent Solutions, an organization built to help companies review, assess and strategize for the Future of Hiring.  “I’ve left the corporate space to better live my passion for changing tactical, basic recruiting functions into strategic partners aligned with business growth objectives.”

Episode 145: Building Resilience Amidst Workplace Chaos
In this episode, Bob’nJoyce riff on ways to build resilience in the midst of significant workplace disruption. This includes everything from a major organizational overhaul to the sudden departure of a popular leader. The question is what practical steps can leaders and HR/OD practitioners do to ground employees and maintain business focus. Disruptive change paralyses an organization and its employees. The typical reaction is to avoid risk, hunker down, and keep concerns to yourself. Managing the chaos, without doubt, is one of the most critical roles that HR/OD people play so… Come on in. Grab a snack. Welcome!

Episode 144: The Discomfort of Learning Something New

Episode 144: The Discomfort of Learning Something New
In this episode, Bob and Joyce take on the discomfort, sometimes embarrassment, of learning something new. There is a period where we often go backwards, stumble and fall when learning something new. The expectation of most people is that once the learning process begins, improvement quickly follows. When it doesn't go this way, disappointment and resignation often follows. As coaches, OD and HR practitioners, the question is, what do we do to encourage experimentation and failure as a normal part of the learning process? How do we level set this expectation with bosses who are impatient to see progress? We offer principles of learning that help answer these questions. Come on in. Grab a snack. Welcome!

Episode 143: The Courage of Being a Third-Party Facilitator

Episode 143: The Courage of Being a Third-Party Facilitator
In this episode, Bob’nJoyce speak to the importance and challenge of third-party facilitation. As HR/OD practitioners, we are often called upon to facilitate open and productive conversations between two parties. This is an important and often underappreciated role that we play. In this episode, you will get: What it looks like when done well The perils of not getting it right Skills necessary to be good at it Why this is one of the most courageous roles HR/OD plays Come on in. Grab a snack. Welcome.

Episode 142: Addressing Cynicism in the Workplace
In this episode, Bob’nJoyce rift on creating a healthy work culture in a world where cynicism about institutions has become the norm. Many workers today are tired, bored, and disillusioned. Given this current reality, what can leaders and HR/OD practitioners to turn the ship around? Bob’nJoyce would offer those cosmetic solutions like flexible hours, ping pong tables, and pizza parties are nice but are not the answer. They discuss the roots of cynicism and then offer ideas and actions to consider. Here are some ideas they offer: Name what is happening correctly to understand the nuances behind the cynicism. Ask, "Is the current cynicism episodic (one time event/impact) or is chronic and pervasive?" The answer to this question will inform what to and what not to do. Ask employees the question, ‘What would create positive energy for your daily work.” You can also ask what is creating negative energy in your daily work. Resist the urge to act to “fix it” in a parental way. Involve employees to co-create solutions. Come on in. Grab a snack. Welcome!

Episode 141: Transforming How Work Gets Done

As OD practitioners, we strive to foster workplaces that create a sustaining competitive advantage and positive work culture. While these ideas can be used in the context of DEI conversations, they apply universally to any topic or situation. Democratizing Transformation with Suzanne Knight

      Democratizing Transformation with Suzanne Knight

“If you democratize the transformation so that there can be true ownership amongst every leader and every person…it will be more successful than if you outsource it to one team.”
      -Suzanne Knight

What does transformation mean to you when it comes to organizations?  Do you ever wonder if maybe there are some transformational “secrets” you haven’t uncovered yet?   In today’s episode, my guest and I break down various examples of transformation that I know you’ll find illuminating.

My guest is Suzanne Knight. Suzanne is a global transformer, having worked with ~40 companies in 12 countries as a consultant (Deloitte) and Retail / CPG executive (Walmart Canada and Philip Morris International). Some of her most awesome projects were redesigning the structure and ways of working of a Canadian CPG company to relentless centre customer experience, building and launching a $450M air-rail link transit system, moving a Canadian airport authority from ‘command and control’ to ‘customer-centric’ culture, leading agile and digital transformation for a major Canadian retailer, and creating the talent strategy for a new industry in Saudi Arabia, merging 5 companies in 6 countries across the Caribbean and Bermuda.

In her most recent role as the Vice President of Transformation Services at Walmart Canada, Suzanne’s team delivered top priority initiatives under the company’s $3.5B strategy. Portfolio included: digital/automation/AI, process redesign, operating model change, business agility, change management, technology enablement and adoption, and project/program delivery.

Suzanne is a Certified Facilitator (MindGym) and popular speaker and workshop leader known for her authenticity and stories from the trenches of transformation. In 2023, she was selected for The Peak's Emerging Leaders List, recognizing Canadians under age 40 who are making a notable impact in their field, as well as The DMZ’s Women of the Year recognizing top female leaders in Technology.  Suzanne holds an MBA in Finance and Strategy from the Schulich School of Business and an MA in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Guelph.

Episode 137: Let 'er Rip! Let’s Celebrate Every Holiday Tradition

Episode 137: Let 'er Rip! Let’s Celebrate Every Holiday Tradition
In this episode, Bob’nJoyce challenge the tendency to walk on eggshells when celebrating holiday traditions in the workplace. Too often, people and organization tamp down celebrating a holiday tradition to not offend. In the name of fairness, companies put restrictions on holiday celebrations that stifles inclusiveness and learning. We encourage companies to let er rip and allow employees to openly celebrate their traditions. All of that being said, we struggled with the discomfort of this topic and indeed found ourselves walking on eggshells. Come join us as we lean into our discomfort. Come on in. Grab a snack. Welcome!

Navigating Your Own Crisis or Grief While Supporting Others with Leanne Schultz

“HR is the cone of silence…you take the weight of a lot of people’s emotions.”

“When you are in a space in your own life, when things are piling up, as an HR professional who is perceived to have all the answers, where can  you go?”
      -Leanne Schultz

Have you had to deal with grief or personal crisis  while still working and while people are still looking to you for support with their own tough situations?   Today’s guest and I discuss how she is navigating her mom’s terminal illness while still supporting the employees depending on her.

My guest is Leanne Schultz. Leanne Schultz, CPHR, has worked in Human Resources for over 10 years in the K-12 education industry. She is currently the Director of Human Resources at West Point Grey Academy, an independent school located in Vancouver BC.

An avid believer in connection and sharing perspectives, Leanne spends a great deal of her time listening and asking questions. Gaining an understanding of the culture helps her to shape the systems and strategies in schools that allow education staff to be their best to help kids do their best.

Leanne and her family split their time between Vancouver and Vancouver Island.

In this episode of Talent Management Truths, you’ll discover:

      • Thoughts around how to take care of yourself so that you can support others
      • The power of sharing what is really going on in your life - at work
      • How important it is to skip the “suck it up buttercup” mentality and learn how to actively grieve

Episode 136: What’s Your Cranberry Ice?

Episode 136: What’s Your Cranberry Ice?
In this episode, Bob’nJoyce make the case for rituals in a world in flux and disarray. Rituals helps us find meaning, comfort, and continuity whether it be a holiday tradition or troubled times. Rituals ground us (the cranberry ice) helping to pave the way forward. The tricky part rituals is to: Let go of what’s not working or no longer relevant, Keep what’s valued (the cranberry ice), Make new ritual, and Consciously choose which rituals to keep, discard, or create. Speaking of rituals - Come on in. Grab your cranberry ice. Welcome!
