From Plastics to Holistic & Septic to Healthy: Dr. Susan Lovelle, Age 69

If you’ve ever struggled with mysterious ailments, especially if you or your doctor blamed it on aging, this episode is for you. Dr. Susa Lovelle, a former plastic surgeon turned lifestyle/functional medicine doctor in her 60s, teaches us what functional medicine is. She talks about nutrition, listening to your body, inflammation, preventing disease, and how all of this is especially important as we get older.

    In this episode, we cover:

    • How stress causes inflammation and disease.
    • How to start taking better care of your health.
    • The validity of taking vitamins.
    • Why we are our own best advocates, our own best physicians, and how our bodies know exactly what they need.
    • How ageism plays a role in medicine and business grants.

Edited Version: From Not Knowing How to Swim to Ironman World Champion: Bobbe Greenberg, Age 72

Edited Version: From Not Knowing How to Swim to Ironman World Champion: Bobbe Greenberg, Age 72

Today is the edited version of my very first episode with Bobbe Greenberg, a multiple Ironman World Champion and marathoner. Bobbe ran her first marathon in her late 40s, and 15 years later, she entered her first triathlon before knowing how to swim. Come along as Bobbe takes us through her journey from casual runner to world champion athlete, all completed over the age of 40 and most over the age of 60.

Please excuse the sound, as this episode was recorded in person before I knew how to interview or set up a sound studio. Oh, how I’ve come a long way, too!

    209. The Modern Retiree Manifesto: A Framework for Retiring in the 21st Century

    209. The Modern Retiree Manifesto: A Framework for Retiring in the 21st Century

This week, we're wrapping up the special series on Modern Retirement.

In previous episodes, we've talked about why reframing retirement is a necessary must-do. I've shared my messy retirement journey. And we've discussed the 7 skills we need to navigate retirement in the 21st century.

Today, I want to walk you through a framework that I've been working on. The Modern Retirement framework is not a rigid methodology but a loose guide that provides direction on what to consider and do while allowing for creative adaptation. It's the result of extensive research, including reading numerous articles and books, listening to relevant podcasts, and conducting interviews with individuals who have successfully navigated their retirement and those who are in the planning stages.

    IN THIS EPISODE

    • Why a framework is useful when planning for modern retirement
    • How a framework works, and how it's different from a methodology
    • The 5 disciplines in the framework
    • The Modern Retiree Manifesto

From Anti-Aging to Anti-Ageism Activist and Writer: Ashton Applewhite, Age 70

Today I talk to Ashton Applewhite, the author of “This Chair Rocks, a Manifesto Against Ageism” and a leading spokesperson raising awareness on ageism and how to dismantle it. She is a leader for Old School, a clearinghouse website for anti-ageism resources, and the voice behind the blog, Yo, Is This Ageist? You may have heard her Ted Talk or seen her on CBS Sunday Morning. Today she answers the questions; what is ageism, why does ageism exist, what does ageism do to our mental health as we get older, and why addressing ageism will make you feel more comfortable about aging. Ashton breaks down this “ism” so well that by the end you will feel nothing but empowered by your age.

As an indie podcaster, that would mean the world to me!

Cheryl Ilov is an author, speaker, dancer, martial artist, physical therapist, and lifelong learner.

She is a former chronic pain patient who was declared incurable by her medical team, which prompted her on a path of self-healing and earning her master's degree in physical therapy.

Cheryl is also a second degree black belt in Ninpon Tai Jutsu, the Art of the Ninja.

She believes that there is an incredible amount of strength and power in each and every one of us, just waiting to be unleashed.

In Cheryl's words: I published the award-winning and best-selling book, “Forever Fit and Flexible: Feeling Fabulous at Fifty and Beyond" in 2016. With over 20 years’ experience as a physical therapist in private practice, I have helped thousands of clients recover from pain and injuries by integrating the science of physical therapy with the art of movement. I believe that everyone can enjoy vibrant health and vitality, at every stage of life.

I am also a second-degree black belt in an ancient Japanese martial art called Ninpo Tai Jutsu. From my own experience of beginning my training at the tender young age of 47 and becoming my teacher’s first female black belt 10 years later, I discovered that there is an incredible amount of strength and power in each and every one of us, just waiting to be unleashed.

I recently published my second book, "The Reluctant Ninja: How A Middle-Aged Princess Became A Warrior Queen," which chronicles my crazy journey in the world of men and martial arts and is receiving rave reviews

Hard Work Wins with Franklin Ausler Sr

You may be familiar with the saying, “it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.”  And putting aside for the moment the horrors of human-sponsored dog fighting, there’s some truth to this adage.  There’s something to be said for attitude, for determination and an never give up mindset.  You undoubtedly know people like this in your own life, or maybe this describes you. These are people who set audacious goals, who are willing to do what ever it takes, against all the odds, to achieve these goals.  These are these hard workers, the go getters.

My guest this week on the Over 50 Health and Wellness podcast is Franklin Ausler Sr.  Franklin is a 63 year old professional bodybuilding, who’s been working out almost his entire life.  As a child his was very athletic, but was tall, skinny, and very introverted.  But his life was about to change – he was going to be introduced to the sport of bodybuilding – and even though he didn’t have any weight training experience or the build to be a bodybuilder, the hook was set and the arc of his life was forever changed.  You can connect with Franklin on Instagram @6.3fitfrank.

You can listen to the Over 50 Health & Wellness show wherever you download podcasts or on my website.

Barrie Street - Fit and Inspired at 84!

Barrie Street.  "I am 84 and feel 48. I’m blessed to have a passion for fitness, which I would love to spread in my blog Over50andFit.ca.  I would also be delighted to reach folks who are less than 50. The message I am trying to impart is that ANYONE of ANY AGE can be fit and it is NEVER too late to start. I believe - indeed I know - that fitness can be inextricably woven into our fabric."

Teaching has been one of my major passions, mainly involved at the secondary school level.

I am entering my 57th year of teaching Math with the same passion as when I began. Spending so much time with young people – whether teaching or coaching them soccer, field hockey, tennis, cross-country running, cricket or ping pong – has kept me young in mind. Young people will always remain the back-bone of society and to help them grow and mature has always been a privilege.

Travelling has occupied a great deal of my leisure time, having visited some 50 countries – many  of which we erroneously call Third World nations – sharing their cultures and learning to appreciate their diverse lifestyles. Also learning to acknowledge how gracious and happy they are, despite often living in destitute conditions and being without the basic essentials of life. I have learned far more from them about the true values of life than I have from our own materialistic society. I have often encouraged my students to travel and acquire a better understanding of life.

Volunteering has probably brought me the most satisfaction. I have been able to teach teachers in Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and Jamaica and also teach children in Guatemala and Costa Rica. I have come away from all these experiences more enriched. Helping to build a village for abandoned children in Costa Rica 40 years ago – one of the boys I found living in a cardboard box on the street still keeps in touch with me – reminded me of my own childhood. My parents abandoned me when I was 6 and this experience gave me a compassion and understanding which otherwise I would never have acquired. Another exciting project was collecting a mountain of soccer equipment here in Vancouver – all of which would have been consigned to the garbage dump – and delivering it to a black South African township. This was gold to the kids.

Sports and exercise have brought me colossal fitness and health. I played team sports from the age of 10 to my mid-forties and then I began running, culminating in a marathon within a year. I was hooked. At 50, I graduated to triathlons and competed in my first Ironman, also within a year. From then on, I have been running, playing tennis and climbing our local iconic mountain – the Grouse Grind – which I have completed more than 2000 times.
