Coach’s Corner – The Lizard People Don’t Want You to Listen to This!

Coach’s Corner – The Lizard People Don’t Want You to Listen to This!

In this no-holds-barred episode, I expose the propaganda war being waged for control over our health and independence. I invite my listeners to join me in an uprising - a rebel alliance - against the lizard people who want to keep us fat, sick, and reliant on their system.

In this episode, I tackle the blatantly misleading headlines about homegrown vegetables having a bigger carbon footprint than industrial farming. I break down the actual EPA statistics about the percent of greenhouse gases coming from cattle. Spoiler alert - it's not the main culprit. The lizard people just want you to think it is so they can control the food supply and get rich off unsustainable alternatives like lab-grown meat.

This is just one example of the all-out lies and manipulation designed to deteriorate our health - so we feed the medical-pharma industrial complex. I expose the unreal amounts of money being made by keeping us unhealthy - we're talking billions and trillions here. They encourage us to eat nutrient-poor processed foods, sit too much, and fill our homes with toxins. Then sell us medications and treatments when we inevitably get sick. It's a vicious cycle, but it keeps their pockets lined.

In this call-to-action episode, I equip my listeners with the knowledge needed to opt out of the matrix. I give practical tips for taking health into our own hands - eating real food, getting strong, becoming our own healthcare advocates. Just imagine what would happen if we all got truly healthy - it would mean trillions of dollars lost for big medicine and pharma. Now that's a rebel uprising!

I invite you to listen to the full riveting episode and join the secret Facebook group where the resistance is organizing. You can find all the links at [my website]. Say no to the lizard people and their insidious propaganda. Join me in the lean, strong rebellion - we are stronger than they want us to believe.

Live Life More Fully After 50 with Adrian Jones

Live Life More Fully After 50 with Adrian Jones

I’m thrilled to share my latest podcast episode with an incredibly inspiring guest, Adrian “AJ” Jones. AJ had a massive heart attack at age 47 that completely changed the trajectory of his life. What emerged was a calling to help others bring more meaning and vitality into their second act.

In my conversation with AJ, we explore that pivotal moment when he found himself suddenly confronting his mortality. The clarity it triggered sent him on a quest to discover his true purpose and live out the rest of his years to the fullest.

AJ’s message particularly resonates with me and my audience of over-50s who are searching for what’s next. His own second chance at life ignited a passion for inspiring personal growth and transformation. This led him to leave corporate finance to launch a company called MORE aimed at helping Gen Xers flourish in midlife.

In the episode, AJ shares vulnerably about the loneliness epidemic plaguing modern middle age. He’s on a mission to create caring community for people trying to navigate major life transitions like empty nesting, retirement, loss of loved ones, and career reinvention.

I loved drilling into specifics about how MORE facilitates shared experiences, small group coaching, and online connection to foster personal breakthroughs. If you, like me, feel called to live your 50s, 60s and beyond with more purpose, meaning, and fulfillment – this conversation is sure to spark some “YES” energy about reigniting your potential.

I wholeheartedly believe anyone listening will feel moved, seen, and uplifted by AJ’s wisdom around midlife metamorphosis. Please have a listen and let the inspiration wash over you! Then drop me a note – I’d love to hear your key takeaways.

Coach’s Corner – How to Overcome Body Dysmorphia

Coach’s Corner – How to Overcome Body Dysmorphia

In this week's episode of the Over 50 Health and Wellness Podcast, I dive into the important yet rarely discussed topic of body dysmorphia. I start by getting vulnerable and sharing my own lifelong journey with body image issues, from feeling skinny and weak as a teenager to battling weight gain and “man boobs” in my 40s.

I explain that body dysmorphia doesn’t discriminate – it can affect people of all ages and body types. As we age, it’s easy to become distressed over the natural changes happening to our bodies. But it goes beyond just vanity - our body image is connected to our self-perception and sense of belonging in the world.

First, I define body dysmorphia as a disorder where you obsess over minor or even nonexistent flaws in your appearance. I emphasize that the first step is simply recognizing when our perceptions are distorted. Then, I share practical strategies for overcoming body dysmorphia: practicing mindfulness, expressing gratitude for what our bodies can do, setting reasonable fitness goals focused on health rather than looks alone, and seeking professional help from a counselor or support group.

Next, I examine the double-edged sword of fitness. Exercise can boost mood and body confidence, but it can also trigger comparison and negative self-talk if we become preoccupied with chasing an unrealistic image. I encourage listeners to celebrate fitness accomplishments like walking farther or lifting heavier. Remind yourself that you’re not in competition with anyone but your own former self.

In closing, I reiterate that overcoming body dysmorphia is an ongoing journey. The key is self-awareness, patience, and self-compassion. I want listeners to focus on becoming the healthiest version of themselves at this stage of life. Our bodies and journeys are unique and beautiful.

Today’s podcast episode is all about how to get in killer shape in your 50s, 60s, and yeah even your 70s. As someone nearly 60 myself trying to stay fit and healthy, I've picked up a thing or two on this whole healthy aging game.

And let me tell you, a lot of folks think it's all downhill after 50 when it comes to your strength and health. But from my experience? Complete BS. With the right changes to how you eat, exercise, manage stress - you can absolutely be in the best shape of your life even as you get older.

In today’s show I break it down into what I call the three pillars of strong healthy aging - movement, nutrition, and recovery. I get into real practical steps - how walking needs to be your jam, why you gotta start smashing way more protein, why tracking your food is a game-changer. Oh and real talk - chronic cardio is not your friend! I speak from experience here.

Some of the stuff that I really geeked out on is why strength training is so crucial to stay powered up as you age. And I get into the science about how our muscle fibers change as we get older. Pretty fascinating if you're a fitness nerd like me! I also talk about how you gotta stop making changes from a place of feeling bad about your body - master your mindset first y'all!

I live this stuff but even I struggled HARD with lame fitness habits and stupid fad diets myself back in the day. I made this podcast to keep it real with people looking to make changes. Whether you need an overhaul or just wanna take your health up a notch, have a listen!

Coach’s Corner – Rewiring Your Brain for Lifelong Fitness

Coach’s Corner – Rewiring Your Brain for Lifelong Fitness

In today's episode, I'm excited to bring you another edition of the Coach's Corner, where it's just you and me diving into crucial topics about health, fitness, and mindset.

Our main focus today is the incredible power of mindset, especially in achieving and maintaining a lean, healthy body as we age. I've been deeply exploring how mindset impacts our journey towards health transformations, particularly for those of us in our fifties, sixties, and seventies. I recently came across an inspiring podcast featuring John Assaraf, who emphasized the critical difference between being interested and being committed in any life endeavor. His insights into neuroplasticity and reshaping our beliefs to match our desired outcomes resonated deeply with me.

John’s discussion underlined the essence of replacing disempowering beliefs with empowering ones. This concept aligns perfectly with our mission at The Silver Edge, where we aim to transform not just bodies, but also minds. By embracing positive affirmations and consistently challenging our self-limiting beliefs, we can literally rewire our brains for success.

I posed a challenge to you, our listeners: Are you merely interested in building and maintaining a lean, strong body, or are you committed? This question is fundamental in our journey towards lifelong health and vitality.

Moving on, I delved into the topic of the world’s best workout programs. I've teamed up with Mind Pump to bring you their MAPS workout programs, tailor-made for every fitness level and goal. From beginners to seasoned fitness enthusiasts, these programs offer structured, age-appropriate strength training regimens.

I shared some of my favorite MAPS programs, including MAPS Anabolic, MAPS Performance, and their latest addition, MAPS 40+. This program isn’t just about physical training; they incorporate lifestyle elements, supplement recommendations, and practical tips for those of us over 40 looking for sustainable health and fitness routines.

Finally, I wrapped up with a reminder about our free resources available at silveredgefree.com, including guides on nutrition, exercise, and healthy lifestyle. Remember, your future self will thank you for the choices you make today.

How to Actively Reverse Biological Age with Dr. Florence Comite

How to Actively Reverse Biological Age with Dr. Florence Comite

I’m thrilled to release my latest episode with a true pioneer in precision health and aging - Dr. Florence Comite. As founder of the Comite Center for Precision Medicine and Health, Dr. Comite has dedicated over 25 years to decoding the mysteries of vital longevity.

In this wide-ranging discussion, Dr. Comite blows open what’s possible in healthy lifespan extension with today’s science. We explore why health markers can start slipping as early as our 30s, the key pillars to stay resilient at any age, optimizing biomarkers vs. settling at “normal”, and truly groundbreaking interventions that can reverse biological age by years.

Dr. Comite’s vision stemmed from a simple question - if aging itself primes us for sickness, why accept decline as inevitable? She rejected the notion that genes dictate destiny and has since helped countless clients push performance levels decades beyond their birth certificates through precision testing and lifestyle optimization.

A few highlights that stuck out:

    - Small hormone optimizations that supercharge energy and strength

    - Peptides that grow bone, muscle and neatly heal injuries

    - The way certain foods provoke a better metabolic response

    - How to educate yourself and challenge doctors’ “normal”

    - Cutting stress exposure at the genetic level

I was hanging on every word - while complex under the hood, Dr. Comite breaks down the science into actionable takeaways we can all understand and benefit from.

The future she describes is one where being vibrant at 100 is the rule, not the exception. We aren’t there yet, but her center offers an inspiring glimpse. Imagine owning your health so completely that biological age reversal is measurable and trackable!

Dr. Comite herself is a testament to walking the walk - while “chronologically gifted”, she has the fitness and energy of someone decades younger. It was a privilege to learn from such a pioneer in the emerging disciplines around longevity.

Coach’s Corner – It’s Time to Level Up!

Coach’s Corner – It’s Time to Level Up!

I started today’s episode by giving you folks the “state of the Over 50 Health & Welnesss Show,” and that led me to my big ask of all of YOU, the listeners – I want YOU to be my Program Director! I want to know what you want in 2024 and beyond – guests, topics, release frequency etc.

Our main topic today is why 2024 should be the year you LEVEL UP your health and fitness game. When I first started, my messaging was hardcore about getting into the best shape of your life. That attracted mostly people who were already beasts.

So I changed my messaging to focus more on my own health struggles and journey from overweight and unhealthy to finding resources like The Barbell Prescription. I started speaking to THAT audience – people looking for help getting started on getting healthy. And that really resonated and changed my business.

But recently I noticed some clients coming to us who were already pretty fit and healthy but felt stuck. They wanted help LEVELING UP – hitting new PRs, losing those last few pounds, improving sports performance, etc.

So I announced the launch of a new Level Up Performance Nutrition coaching program just for those types of clients who need a custom nutrition plan but already have dialed in workouts and health.

I wrapped up by challenging all listeners to make 2024 the year you LEVEL UP your health and fitness, no matter your starting point. Stay strong!

Email me what you want to hear on this podcast in 2024 – what guests, topics, how many podcasts a week, what you like, don’t like, etc.

Record Setting Fitness Has No Age Limit with Kim Rahir

Record Setting Fitness Has No Age Limit with Kim Rahir

Recently, I had the honor of interviewing a truly remarkable woman on my podcast - Kim Rahir, a 60-year-old competitive Olympic weightlifter. Kim’s incredible journey began in her late forties when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). Despite her neurologist’s warnings to “take it slow,” Kim walked straight from his office into the gym, determined to reclaim power over her body.

What began as a small act of defiance soon transformed into a lifelong passion. As Kim devoted herself to weight training, she grew measurably stronger and healthier, astonishing her doctors with her recovery. They credited her dedication to strength training and proper nutrition with successfully managing her MS when other options had failed. By her early fifties, Kim was getting strong and learning Olympic lifts under an experienced coach.

Now, just over a decade later, Kim is redefining what is physically possible after 50. Last year, at age 60, she won a silver medal in Olympic weightlifting at the European Masters Championship.

During our podcast interview, Kim eloquently dispelled prevailing myths surrounding age and athleticism. With her dedication to diet and intense training, she is living proof that maintaining supreme fitness well into retirement age is achievable. Her energy and lust for life moved me deeply. She encouraged my audience to ignore the doubters and recognize that transformative growth remains possible at any age.

At 60, as she trains for upcoming international contests, Kim Rahir exemplifies grace, wisdom, and mighty strength - both inner and outer. Hers is the story not of youthful potential but of a maturity that empowers and enriches our second acts.

Coach’s Corner – The Top 5 Worst Fitness Trends of 2023

Coach’s Corner – The Top 5 Worst Fitness Trends of 2023

In this episode, we're going to wrap up 2023 with a special Coach's Corner segment, where I'll be sharing my thoughts on the top five over-hyped fitness and nutrition trends of the year.

Before diving into that, I want to remind you about our one-on-one personalized nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle coaching services. If you're over 50 and looking to optimize your health, shed some fat, and build lean muscle, now is the perfect time to get started. As of December 28th, 2023, we have eight coaching slots available for January, so don't hesitate to reach out!

Now, let’s tackle the main content of today’s episode - the top five worst fitness trends of 2023. I’ve carefully selected these trends based on their mainstream popularity and the potential misinformation surrounding them. Here they are:

    1. Plant-Based Diets: This trend is not about the diet itself but the extreme claims associated with it, like the demonization of meat consumption. It’s important to understand that a balanced diet is key, and eliminating any food group entirely can lead to nutritional deficiencies.

    2. The Carnivore Diet: The exact opposite of a plant-based diet, this one promotes eating exclusively animal products. While it might work for some, it lacks balance and can be unsustainable in the long term.

    3. Intermittent Fasting: Often marketed as a quick fix for various health issues, intermittent fasting isn't the magical solution it's sometimes made out to be. While it can be beneficial in some contexts, it's not a one-size-fits-all approach, especially for those over 50.

    4. Prescription Fat Loss Drugs: Drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy have gained popularity for weight loss, but they don’t encourage healthy habits. It's essential to focus on sustainable lifestyle changes rather than relying on medication for weight loss.

    5. Cold Plunges: Gaining immense popularity, cold plunges are often overhyped. While they have benefits, they are not a substitute for foundational health practices like proper nutrition and exercise.

In summary, my advice for the coming year is to focus on the basics: eat real food, exercise regularly, manage stress, and get quality sleep. Avoid getting distracted by these flashy trends that promise quick results but don’t deliver long-term health benefits.

As we say goodbye to 2023, I wish you all a happy and healthy new year. Remember, our goal at The Silver Edge is to help you become the healthiest, strongest, and most vital version of yourself.

Classic Rewind - Nature Wants You to be Fat with Dr. Richard Johnson

Classic Rewind - Nature Wants You to be Fat with Dr. Richard Johnson

I recently had the incredible opportunity to chat with Dr. Richard Johnson, a renowned professor of medicine at the University of Colorado, on our show. We dived deep into the surprising science behind weight gain and the strategies to prevent and reverse it, especially pertinent to those of us over 50.

Dr. Johnson’s insights were nothing short of eye-opening. His decades of research into obesity, diabetes, and diet have culminated in fascinating discoveries, particularly around the role of sugar – and more specifically, fructose – in our diets.

One key takeaway from our conversation was the critical role sugar plays in activating what Dr. Johnson refers to as the "survival switch." This mechanism, deeply ingrained in our biology, was once a survival tool but has now turned against us in an age of abundant food. The rapid consumption of high-fructose foods, especially sugary beverages, triggers this switch, leading to a cascade of metabolic changes that promote fat storage and hunger.

Dr. Johnson also highlighted the importance of hydration in managing weight and overall health. Surprisingly, most people with obesity tend to be dehydrated. Regular water intake can significantly impact your metabolic health, an easy yet powerful habit to adopt.

But it's not all about what you should avoid. Dr. Johnson emphasized the benefits of natural fruits, good fats (like omega-3 fatty acids), and even coffee. The key is moderation and understanding how these foods interact with our bodies.

Exercise, too, was a major point of discussion. Dr. Johnson’s perspective on exercise goes beyond just burning calories. He stresses its role in improving mitochondrial health and thereby, our overall energy and metabolism. As someone passionate about fitness and health, I couldn't agree more with the importance of regular exercise, not just for weight management but for our overall vitality.

One aspect of our talk that particularly struck me was the interconnectedness of various health factors. From stress and sleep to diet and exercise, each element plays a crucial role in maintaining optimal health, especially as we age.

I invite you to listen to this enlightening episode with Dr. Richard Johnson. Whether you're looking to lose weight, improve your health, or simply gain a deeper understanding of your body, this episode is packed with valuable insights.

Remember, it’s never too late to make a change. You can find the full episode and additional resources over at silverridgefitness.com/episode111. And don't forget to subscribe and follow our podcast for more insightful conversations like this one.

Coach's Corner Classic Rewind - How to Fix a Broken Metabolism

Coach's Corner Classic Rewind - How to Fix a Broken Metabolism

I'm excited to share some highlights and personal insights from this Classic Rewind. In this episode, we take a closer look at two crucial topics that are particularly close to my heart: metabolism and knee pain management. Let me walk you through what makes this episode special and why I believe it's a must-listen for anyone looking to improve their health and wellness, especially as we age.

    Understanding and Repairing Metabolism

In this episode, I explore the intricate world of metabolism, inspired by the story of Helen, a 58-year-old real estate broker struggling with weight loss, stress, and sleep deprivation. This segment is close to me as it echoes the challenges many of us face in maintaining a healthy metabolism as we age.

    My Key Takeaways:

Importance of Hydration and Balanced Nutrition: I emphasize the significance of staying hydrated and consuming a diet rich in protein. These are foundational steps to rejuvenate a sluggish metabolism.

Stress Management and Quality Sleep: I discuss strategies to manage stress and improve sleep quality. Our mental well-being is deeply intertwined with our physical health, and these aspects are critical for metabolic balance.

Exercise Recommendations: I advocate for a balanced approach to exercise, focusing on strength training rather than excessive cardio. This is essential for sustaining muscle mass and enhancing metabolic health.

    Addressing Knee Pain During Squats

Another segment of the podcast that I’m particularly passionate about is addressing the common issue of knee pain during squats. I challenge the misconception of avoiding squats and instead provide actionable advice to strengthen the hip area to alleviate knee pain.

    My Personal Insights:

Hip Weakness as a Culprit: Understanding that knee pain often originates from hip weakness and immobility is a game-changer. It’s important to tackle the root cause rather than just the symptoms.

Effective Rehab Exercises: I share detailed instructions for rehab exercises like the 90-90 stretch, McGill airplane, and lateral banded walks. These exercises can significantly improve knee health and overall mobility.

    Why This Episode Is Important

What I love about this episode is the holistic approach we take towards health and wellness. It’s not just about the physical aspects; we delve into emotional and psychological factors that significantly impact our fitness journey. My aim is to empower you with knowledge and practical tips to make informed decisions about your health.

Classic Rewind - Why Diets Fail with Dr. David Prologo

Classic Rewind - Why Diets Fail with Dr. David Prologo

This episode originally aired back in August 2022, but as you’ll soon hear, it’s worth a re-listen!

I had the opportunity to interview Dr. David Prologo. Dr. Prologo brings a unique perspective as an interventional radiologist, obesity medicine specialist, and author of the book "The Catching Point Transformation." In our interview, he explained that the main reason diets fail is because they go against our body's natural survival mechanisms. When we abruptly cut calories or ramp up exercise, our bodies react by slowing metabolism, increasing hunger signals, and doing whatever it takes to hold on to fat stores.

Instead, Dr. Prologo advocates for taking time upfront to change your body composition and improve your exercise capacity. This "investment period" allows your body to metabolically adapt so that weight loss efforts don't feel like constant deprivation. He uses the analogy of a flower - watering it more won't make it bloom faster. You first need to give it sunlight and time to grow stronger roots.

I was fascinated to learn from Dr. Prologo that changes to the body can actually cause beneficial changes in the brain, improving motivation and healthy behaviors. He calls this "retrograde neuroplasticity." Things like getting better sleep, building muscle, and boosting nutrition provide positive feedback loops. Over time, your preferences shift so that healthy choices become rewarding and sustainable.

If you've struggled to lose weight and keep it off, I highly recommend listening to this interview. Dr. Prologo provides an empowering message - with the right strategy centered on your unique starting point, you absolutely can transform your body composition for good.

Coach's Corner - Setting Yourself Up for Health Success

Coach's Corner - Setting Yourself Up for Health Success

Welcome to another episode of the Silver Edge Fitness podcast! In today's Coaches Corner episode, I shared my tips for setting impactful and achievable health-related New Year's resolutions.

I started out by reflecting on my own past failed resolutions, admitting I've made some pretty audacious ones over the years that were destined to fail. I know many can relate to starting off the new year highly motivated to finally get in shape or eat healthier, only to fall back into old habits by February.

I then dove into reasons why resolutions often fail - they're too ambitious, we're not mentally ready to change, we don't understand our underlying motivations, we lack a solid plan and accountability system. I also discussed some deeper psychological barriers from making positive change, like believing we're undeserving or fearing failure.

Next, I explained the SMART goal framework to set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound goals. I encouraged listeners to make resolutions focused on smaller, incremental changes over a shorter timeframe rather than huge, intimidating year-long goals.

When it comes to nutrition resolutions targeting weight or fat loss, I urged rethinking the fixation on hitting a certain number on the scale. Instead, I advised focusing on metrics like body fat percentage or lean muscle gain. I suggested resolutions around increasing protein intake, entering a "metabolic restoration" phase before starting a diet, and establishing healthier eating habits like mindful eating, meal prepping, staying hydrated, and not snacking after dinner.

On the exercise front, I recommended a simple regimen of full-body strength training 3 days a week and starting with a daily step goal based on your current baseline activity. I emphasized keeping things sustainable rather than intense cardio blasts or bootcamp workouts.

I wrapped up the show by stressing mindset and motivation as key to long-term success. While motivation helps kick things off, it fades quickly. By focusing on becoming the type of person who relishes healthy behaviors and listening to your "why", you're much more likely to stick with resolutions. I also encouraged being compassionate with ourselves - progress isn't linear and setbacks will happen. The most important thing is getting back on track.

I'm excited for you to put these tips into action in the new year! Be sure to check out the resources below for guides to help with your fitness journey.
