Should I take progesterone? This may be a question you have been asking yourself lately. I know I’ve been getting it a lot lately!

Progesterone has become a hot topic lately, especially between conventional and
functional medicine. It is one of the key hormones we have as women. It’s our natural anti-anxiety hormone and is what keeps estrogen in check. But how do we know when we may need to start taking progesterone? And is it really any different from the progestins in birth control?

In this episode I’m diving into what exactly progesterone is, when it’s beneficial to take it, and why it’s a GAME CHANGER for things like perimenopause!

    You’ll hear more about:

    • What progesterone is (and what it isn’t)
    • The power of progesterone in the female body (hint: it’s not just for your uterus!)
    • What happens to progesterone in your 40’s
    • Progesterone vs progestin

    • And more!

#26: Eye Give a Damn about Overcoming Obstacles with Dr. Cecelia Koetting

#26: Eye Give a Damn about Overcoming Obstacles with Dr. Cecelia Koetting

When it comes to overcoming obstacles, Dr. Cecelia Koetting likes to tackle them head on. In her mid-thirties while training for a marathon, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 colorectal cancer right before the world shut down for COVID. Luckily, her attitude has always been to never ask “why me?” but to find a path forward and roll with it. Her experience battling cancer led her to try to connect with each patient on a more human level. As for optometry and patient care, if Dr. Cecelia Koetting doesn’t have an answer to a question, she dives in to figure it out. This often leads to the creation of her CE lectures, including those on hormone replacement therapy and limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). This has also led to her current pursuit of a Master of Public Health in epidemiology and biostatistics which she hopes will allow her to find opportunities to further improve the profession of optometry.

009 Embracing Menopause: My Journey Through Hormone Balance

009 Embracing Menopause: My Journey Through Hormone Balance

Welcome back to Beyond the Words! I'm Dimple Thakrar. Today, I'm sharing a deeply personal experience - my journey through menopause. I want to emphasize that I'm not a medical professional, just a woman sharing her story.

I open up about my family's history with ovarian issues and losing my mother to it. This led to a decision for my sisters and me to undergo preventive hysterectomies. The aftermath was unexpected - surgery-induced menopause. The emotional and physical toll was immense. Finally, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) provided relief, but it came with its own challenges.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Menopause is often misunderstood and stigmatized, but it's a natural phase for many women.
    • HRT can be a crucial lifeline for those struggling with menopausal symptoms.
    • Compassion is vital, both for oneself and for those supporting women going through this transition.
    • Understanding and seeking help for menopausal symptoms is crucial for overall well-being.

Remember, you're not alone. Seek the support you need, and approach this phase with compassion and understanding. Take care. - Dimple x

#78-Filtering the Fear of Insulin Resistance in Menopause with Val Schonberg, RD

Are you convinced that with your welcome to midlife and menopause letter, you’re also doomed to develop insulin resistance? It’s not much different from believing that every pregnant woman will also develop gestational diabetes. Is it possible? Sure. Does it happen to everyone? Definitely not.

In this episode, I’ve invited Registered Dietitian, Val Schonberg back on the show to help challenge some of the most common assumptions about insulin resistance for women in menopause. We discuss the alarming statistic that 56% of people currently on TRT don't actually need it, and provide insights into how to naturally optimize testosterone levels. Join us as we uncover the 10 testosterone killers to avoid and take control of your hormonal health.

    Show Notes:

    1. Understanding Testosterone and TRT
      • Testosterone is a hormone responsible for various functions in the body.
      • TRT is a growing industry, but not everyone needs it.
      • Overprescription of TRT is akin to the opioid epidemic; we need to address root causes.
    2. How Testosterone Is Produced
      • Testosterone production involves the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and gonads.
      • Micronutrients like vitamin D play a role in boosting testosterone naturally.
    3. The Ten Testosterone Killers
      • Vegetable Oils: Avoid them due to their impact on hormone regulation.
      • High Stress and Anxiety Levels: Chronic stress leads to increased cortisol, which lowers testosterone.
      • Excessive Alcohol Intake: Consistent alcohol consumption affects testosterone levels negatively.
      • Refined Carbohydrates and Sugar: High-glycemic diets lead to temporary drops in testosterone.
      • Dehydration: Proper hydration is essential for optimal testosterone production.
      • Excess Body Fat: Obesity reduces testosterone and converts more to estrogen.
      • Lack of Exercise: Physical activity helps maintain healthy testosterone levels.
      • Medications: Some medications, like statins, can lower testosterone.
      • Triclosan and Triclocarban: Found in certain soaps and products, these chemicals disrupt hormone balance.
      • Xenoestrogens: These chemicals mimic estrogen and can be found in skincare and personal care products.
    4. Taking Action
      • Live a Life by Design: Become aware of your habits and behaviors and make intentional changes.
      • Cellular Testing: Consider micronutrient testing to address deficiencies and customize supplementation.

Taking control of your testosterone levels doesn't necessarily require TRT. By understanding the 10 testosterone killers and making lifestyle changes, you can naturally optimize your hormonal health and improve your overall well-being.
