8: Can you Have Hormone Balance With Breast Cancer? with Esther Blum

8: Can you Have Hormone Balance With Breast Cancer? with Esther Blum

As women age and close in on menopause, they start to feel off, so they go to the doctor (like we’ve been taught to do). What does the doctor tell us? “That’s totally normal for your age.” News flash - it isn’t! This week’s guest is Esther Blum - integrative dietician, author, mom, and lover of exercise (that can be done in 20 minutes or less). She tells us that she should call her practice The Gaslight-free Zone. Esther begins by talking about the frustration and theft of joy and hope women feel when they perceive that they are not being heard or are being given up on.

    We also talk about:

    • Listening to your body and your intuition - you know when something is off/different/wrong
    • What gynecologists actually are and why they can't help you with your hormone issues
    • Misinformation surrounding hormone replacement and its link to breast cancer, based on a flawed study
    • The importance of bodily functions working correctly (gut health especially) and being addressed in the right order
    • Alcohol's impact on your hormones
    • Why you shouldn't be afraid to fire your physician
    • And so much more!

    More about Esther:
Esther Blum is an Integrative Dietitian and Menopause Expert. In the past 27 years, she has helped thousands of women master menopause through nutrition, hormones, and self-advocacy.

Esther is the bestselling author of See ya later, Ovulator, Cavewomen Don’t Get Fat, Eat, Drink and Be Gorgeous, Secrets of Gorgeous, and The Eat, Drink, and Be Gorgeous Project.

Known as Gwyneth Paltrow’s menopause mentor and by Forbes for helping women thrive through menopause, Esther was also voted Best Nutritionist by Manhattan Magazine. She has appeared on the Today Show, ABC-TV, and Good Day NY and is frequently quoted in goop, Well + Good, Forbes, Ben Greenfield Life, Time Magazine, The New York Post, The Los Angeles Times, In Style, Bazaar, Self, Fitness, Marie Claire, and Cosmo.

Esther received a Bachelor of Science in Clinical Nutrition from Simmons College in Boston and is a graduate of New York University, where she received her Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition. 7: The Impact of Hormones on Breast Cancer and Menopause with Dr. Deb Matthew

7: The Impact of Hormones on Breast Cancer and Menopause with Dr. Deb Matthew

Do you just not feel like yourself anymore, even though your lab tests say everything is “normal?” Does your significant other call you after work each day to check your mood and whether they need to suit up in some armor before coming home? This is exactly what my guest today was dealing with! Dr. Deb Matthew is a conventionally trained doctor who, once learning more about hormones and how they were affecting her personally, left her pediatric practice and was retrained in functional medicine. Today she’s now known as the Happy Hormone Doctor and we are going to talk about her journey.

    We will talk more about:

    • How your lab work does not always tell the true story, especially when only looking at one tiny part of the potential issue
    • The surprising reason doctors often downplay your health issues or symptoms
    • Why people think hormones will cause breast cancer
    • Hormone replacement therapy -- who's it for and how it works
    • If Tamoxifen is really the answer for breast cancer patients
    • Using a holistic approach to best produce and metabolize estrogen
    • And more!

    More about Dr. Deb:
Deb Matthew MD, America’s Happy Hormones Doctor, wears many hats as a best-selling author, international speaker, private practice doctor, wife, and mom of 4 boys. She helps her patients restore their health by addressing the root cause of their symptoms (including hormone imbalances!) instead of just treating diseases with drugs.

After suffering for years with exhaustion and irritability that prevented her from being the wife and mom that she wanted to be, she refocused her medical career to help others get their hormones back in balance.
Dr. Deb combined her background in medicine with her interest in fitness and nutrition to create a complete medical wellness approach using scientifically-based treatments to help her patients restore their energy, libido, mood, and memory, as well as lose weight and discontinue many of their prescription medications.

As Past- President of the North Carolina Integrative Medicine Society, she helps support Integrative/Functional Medicine practitioners in the community and has a goal of shifting the standard of care in medicine towards creating wellness.

Xtalks Speaks with Astellas Pharma's VP & Head of BioPharma Development Marci English About Menopause Drug Approval

This episode features an interview with Marci English, Vice President and Head of BioPharma Development at Astellas Pharma, about the recent FDA approval of the company’s drug Veozah (fezolinetant) for the treatment of moderate to severe hot flashes and night sweats due to menopause.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been the conventional treatment for menopause-associated vasomotor symptoms, otherwise known as hot flashes and night sweats; however, not all women can receive hormone therapies. Apart from HRT, treatment options have been limited for the vasomotor symptoms of menopause and therefore, the approval of Veozah addresses a significant unmet need in the space.

Hear more about Veozah, including its mechanism of action and the pathways to its approval.

#174: Should I Get Testosterone Replacement?

#174: Should I Get Testosterone Replacement?

Should I be on testosterone treatments? I get this question a lot, so let’s talk about it! Testosterone is super important to women; it is the growth hormone responsible for building lean, sexy muscles, keeping our blood sugar and weight in check, and giving us an overdrive for life!  While most of our sex hormones are created by the ovaries before menopause, our adrenal glands also make sex hormones. If you go into menopause with exhausted adrenal glands, your sex hormone levels are going to drop to basically non-existent, which is why we often recommend Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Let’s talk about the benefits!

#14: Menopause, hormones & aging: how strength training counteracts hormonal changes & improves healthspan

In this week's episode, I dive into what is going on with women's bodies in perimenopause and menopause and how strength training is really the key to keeping our bodies functioning properly and serving us well through the rest of our lives.

In menopause, our estrogen levels change dramatically. I review all the ways that loss of estrogen negatively impacts the condition of our bodies and the vital role that weight training plays in counteracting it. If you're a woman in her 30s, 40s or 50s, you won't want to miss this one!

    I discuss:

    • What are perimenopause, menopause & post-menopause?
    • What are the most common symptoms of menopause?
    • What age do people hit menopause?
    • How long does perimenopause last?
    • What's going on with our hormones in menopause?
    • What's the role of estrogen, and what happens when there is less of it?
    • How to maintain and increase your strength
    • How to improve bone density
    • What kind of weight training is effective to counteract the changes
    • and more!

308: How Women's Symptoms of Stroke Differ from Men: Understanding Female-Specific Factors and Symptoms | DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE

308: How Women's Symptoms of Stroke Differ from Men: Understanding Female-Specific Factors and Symptoms | DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE

Each year, 55,000 more women than men have strokes in the United States. In this episode, Maya Acosta and Dr. Rizwan Bukhari discuss how women's stroke symptoms differ from men, emphasizing the importance of recognizing nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, vomiting, disorientation, and confusion. Women are at a higher risk of stroke compared to men, and this is due to various factors unique to women such as pregnancy,  pre-eclampsia, menopause, hormone replacement therapy, and atrial fibrillation. Women of color have a higher risk of stroke than white women, mainly due to more risk factors present.

    Key Points:

    • Women can present differently from men when experiencing a stroke, and it's important to recognize nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, vomiting, disorientation, and confusion.
    • Know the risk factors unique to women and what you can do to reduce those risks.
    • Prevention is key. This means you can optimize your health to experience pregnancy and menopause with fewer complications.

    75. Happy Healthy Hormones with Dr. Daved Rosensweet M.D.

    75. Happy Healthy Hormones with Dr. Daved Rosensweet M.D.

Dr. Daved Rosensweet is the Founder of The Menopause Method, a comprehensive approach to treating the many symptoms and physical changes of diminished hormones that women experience in midlife.

Dr. Rosensweet is a leader in the bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) field. In our conversation, he debunks the common myths that many women and physicians believe about BHRT and unpacks where most of the misinformation stems from.

In 2002, there was a government-led study known as the Women’s Health Initiative which claimed that hormones for postmenopausal women are harmful. Years later, that conclusion was proven to be false, but the damage was already done. Dr. Rosensweet and his team at The Menopause Method are on a mission to show women that they can have dominion over their wellbeing and thrive in menopause.

Dr. Rosensweet highlights incredible success stories of women treated with bioidentical hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. He shares his recommendations for finding the right physicians and nurse practitioners who are also dedicated to advancing women’s medicine and resisting the one-size-fits-all approach.

Listen in to learn more about how to increase vitality and improve health outcomes in menopause.

We're Smart. We're Educated. We're Grown-Ass Women. with Laura Stratte and Jacqueline Giannelli

If you're like us, you have been frustrated with the lack of adequate perimenopause and menopause care provided (or NOT provided) by your current medical team. Enter Elektra Health, a digital health company with a mission to smash the menopause taboo by empowering women with evidence-based education, care & community. We were lucky to speak with Laura Stratte, their Program & Operations Manager, and Jacqueline Giannelli, one of their founding Nurse Practitioners who has been treating Julia's symptoms with much success. These ladies are all about education and empowerment, offering women honest risk-assessments and treatment options, and letting them lead the charge in their own menopausal healthcare journey. All of this may sound very medical and therefore serious in tone, but don't let that fool you. As always, there was plenty of laughter as we talked about the audacity of women daring to have a libido, the need for a webcam speculum in women's telehealth, and avocado tools.
