    Memory Lapses and Senior Moments

    Memory Lapses and Senior Moments

This week’s guest is Dr. Stan Goldberg, A former professor of communication disorders he retired at 57 due to memory issues and a sleep disorder. The Bone Coach

    The Bone Coach

When it comes to midlife and aging, there are the obvious cues such as wrinkles (we embrace them), our graying locks and maybe the occasional creaky joints, but there are also the invisible signs.  Our bone health is super important, but are we being as proactive as we can be in order to protect ourselves as we age?  Did you have a grandmother or a great aunt suffer a broken hip at some point?  Genetics and our own prior health and lifestyle history all play a role in future bone health.

Kevin Ellis was given a daunting diagnosis of osteoporosis in his early thirties, but he wasn't convinced that the advice he was provided was the answer.  So often the directive given is take some calcium, vitamin D, go for a walk and take a bone drug.  Kevin knew this was woefully inadequate, and he started his quest to not only address his own health but to champion others with osteopenia and osteoporosis.  The diagnosis doesn't have to be your destiny!

The Bone Coach is Kevin Ellis' platform to educate others on the practical ways to overcome weakened bones and live an overall healthier lifestyle.  He is a Forbes certified Integrative Health Coach and the founder of the Stronger Bones Plan.

You can sign up for a free Stronger Bones Masterclass, which is a three step process to get yourself started on your healthy bone journey.

    Show Notes
Roughly 90% of your bone mass is put on by the time you are 18 years-old.  You should get a proper diagnosis, which begins with a bone scan.  You can also request a blood test that will provide osteoporosis markers to show whether you have active bone loss.

    • Possible causes of osteopenia and osteoporosis (men can also be affected):
    • Celiac or other digestive disorders that affect nutrient absorption
    • Poor sleep/high stress
    • Poor nutrition
    • Sedentary lifestyle
    • Excessive smoking or alcohol use
    • History of eating disorders
    • Certain medications

    Important foods:

    • Canned fish - Mackerel, salmon and sardines
    • Protein - Women should get 30 grams/meal
    • Omega-3 supplements
    • Leafy greens such as arugula (excellent choice) - Spinach is not ideal, as it contains oxalate, which binds to calcium - Dino/lacinato kale is also a great choice
    • Vitamin C rich foods - Citrus, berries, red/yellow peppers
    • Cucumber
    • Limit or eliminate alcohol and refined sugars

    Physical activity:
Weight bearing exercise where muscle is pulling on bone and impact exercise

    • Yardwork, running, jogging, tennis, yoga and dancing
    • Resistance training - Can start with your own body weight, resistance bands, dumbbells

Feeling A Little Lost In Middle Age? Start Finding Your Purpose With Midlife Blogger & Influencer Tami Kraus

Tami Kraus, aka @tami.in.between, began preparing for an empty nest before her fourth child left for college. She knew that if she rested she would rust. So she examined her heart and found something that she could learn about and create to fill that space she knew would be open.

And her "hobby blog" grew to places that she didn't expect and led to new and exciting new things for her. Without planning it she quickly became a midlife & style influencer and DIYer with a instagram following of over 12K.

Tami is one of the most upbeat and positive midlife women that I've ever talked to and you'll want to listen to hear us talk about all the things, including:

    • How she discovered her new purpose after her children left her an empty nest
    • How she turned her "hobby blog" into a business
    • How she "learned" to do a new thing by asking and getting help from others
    • What she has found to be the most amazing thing about the internet and online connections
    • What it means to be a midlife influencer
    • What she is seeing as the trend in influencing
    • How to overcome imposter syndrome
    • How being authentic is the key to every success
    • The importance of using the new time you have in midlife and over 50 (50+) to find your purpose and passions
    • The time of the "GET" is over - and how it is now the time of the "DO".
