Romans: Rescued for New Life [Romans: 01]

    Romans 6:1-11 // Jonathan Neef

We all love a good rescue story. But what happens after the rescue? Is that the end? Is there any more? Today we are in the book of Romans where the first five chapters have highlighted our need for a rescue. Today, beginning in chapter six, we will see that we were not only rescued from something but that we are rescued for something. Specifically, we have not only been rescued from sin and death but we are rescued for Life. And not just any life but life with Christ. What does that look like? Join us as we take a deeper look.

But What About Hell? [But What About? 07]

But What About Hell? [But What About? 07]

    Matthew 25:31-46 // Nathan Miller

Jesus Himself makes it clear. Some will go to heaven. And some will go to hell. At the very thought of that, many of us have issues.

Our imaginations have been tainted, but more than that, we really struggle to believe that God could punish evil so severely. I mean, maybe for the really wicked people. But what about my friends at school, work, our neighborhoods? Do we still believe in hell?

Yes. But we have a lot of work to do if we’re going to understand this even a little bit. I’ve got a list of 6 things to help us understand why hell exists and what it means. Are you with me?

    056.5 - So Now You're a Sergeant: Ryan Miller, Part 2

    056.5 - So Now You're a Sergeant: Ryan Miller, Part 2

Welcome back to part two of my interview with Ryan Miller about leadership at the sergeant's level.  In this episode, Ryan is going to talk about leading officers across that wide spectrum of different ages, how to balance your new administrative responsibilities with leading in the field, as well as giving some good advice about how to handle the situation when an officer is likely going to get fired.  Don't miss the good tactic that Ryan's FTO taught him for how to supervise from a short distance away, which he calls "kickin' rocks."

If you haven't listened to part one of this interview, you don't necessarily have to listen to them in order, because we cover so many different topics, but you definitely want to listen to them both.  And share these episodes with other sergeants and other officers who aspire to be supervisors; we want the best people with the best guidance to lead our police officers.

    056 - So Now You're a Sergeant: Ryan Miller, Part 1

    056 - So Now You're a Sergeant: Ryan Miller, Part 1

A few months ago, a listener wrote in and asked for advice for new police supervisors.  He said, "I'd like to listen to someone that's been in a command role for years and I'd like to hear their experiences and also any advice they might have for the future generation of supervisors."

So today we're talking to Major Ryan Miller from the Overland Park, KS, PD.  Ryan is a great leader who spent years in SWAT as an officer, a sergeant, and later as a captain and a major, supervising other leaders.  He's a good friend, and often my go-to guy for police leadership questions.  In this first part, we'll cover different styles of leadership at the patrol sergeant level, as well as leadership mistakes sergeants sometimes make, like being too rigid or not displaying enough confidence.  And don't miss what Ryan says about building a network of peers to reach out to when you have questions.

Care for his Sheep [Now What? 03]

Care for his Sheep [Now What? 03]

    John 21: 1-19 // Tom Nelson

I don’t know specifically where your brokenness or struggles lie, nor do I know what mistakes you have made or what your most regretful failures have been or currently are. But I am confident that if you are like me in my mistakes and failures, a crying question of my heart is what is God’s response? For those who are followers of Jesus, or who are considering following him, a burning question we wrestle with, yet one we seldom verbalize, is what is Jesus’ response to us when we fail him?   Does Jesus lecture us? Shame us? Condemn us? Abandon us? Jesus’ response may surprise you, even shock you.

050.5 - The Task Force Life: Jon Asher, Part 2

050.5 - The Task Force Life: Jon Asher, Part 2

This is the second part of my interview with Jon Asher, who worked for 8 years on the U.S. Marshal's fugitive apprehension task force.  He talks how you can help your department while working full time at the task force.  And this is an interesting dynamic where, as a task force officer, you're balancing relationships among people at the the municipal, county, state, and federal levels.  He also does a great job of weighing the pros and cons of this kind of work.

Don't miss what he says about coming back and reintegrating with your department once the the task force assignment is over and what he says are the advantages of having done the task force work.

050 - The Task Force Life: Jon Asher, Part 1

050 - The Task Force Life: Jon Asher, Part 1

Today we're covering a career topic of interest to some local cops: the opportunity to be assigned to a federal task force.  Whether it's for a single operation or it's a multi-year chunk of your career, task force work can be an opportunity to experience a different kind of law enforcement and make great relationships with folks outside of your agency.

So this is part one of an interview with Jon Asher a local cop and SWAT guy from a Kansas City suburb, who spent eight years doing high-risk fugitive apprehension with the U.S. Marshals.  In this first part, John talks about how he went from a special unit to the task force and how it overlapped with his SWAT team responsibilities.  He also talks about why it's advantageous for a local agency to have someone on a federal task force.

My previous episode on the U.S. Marshals was episode 015.

What Can Be Done After a Line of Duty Death: Ward Jenkins - Bonus Ep 15

What Can Be Done After a Line of Duty Death: Ward Jenkins - Bonus Ep 15

Ward Jenkins is back with us again; he's a veteran LAPD cop and fellow police chaplain here in Kansas City, and he sat down with me recently to talk about what can be done after a line of duty death.  I didn't give him any other prep; I just told him that another chaplain had emailed me asking for advice and then Ward and I got together and recorded conversation. We definitely look at this from a police chaplain's point of view, but I really think any supervisor, wellness officer, FOP representative, or peer support member would get a lot out of this discussion.

Ward's previous interviews with Hey Chaplain are episodes 042 and 042.5.

041 - The Lasting Impact of Near Misses: Joe Grasela, w/ Jim Sutterby

041 - The Lasting Impact of Near Misses: Joe Grasela, w/ Jim Sutterby

When we talk about traumatic experiences for first responders we usually talk about those rare events of extreme violence and harm that are seared into the memory.  But there are other categories of experiences which can haunt a police officer, like the near miss.

What happens when an officer almost pulls the trigger, making a split second decision (correctly) not to shoot?  It may surprise some, but these supposed non-events can leave a lasting impression as well.  So today we'll talk to two veteran cops about near misses.  First you'll hear an account that Major Jim Sutterby told me several months ago, which inspired this episode.  I had Captain Joe Grasela listen to it and Joe and I talked about the near miss, about swerving so close to a horrible tragedy.

Cultivator [The Story of the Spirit 06]

Cultivator [The Story of the Spirit 06]

What is holding you back from who you want to be? However you answer that question, you will identify something — a circumstance, a limitation, a habit, an addiction — something an obstacle that stands in your way. Holds you back. Shipwrecks your efforts to become the person you truly want to be. And those moments we feel it: We aren’t truly free.
