EP:211 Combat Art with Marine Corps Kris Battles

Brushstrokes meet battle lines with Kris Battles, Artist in Residence at the National Marine Corps Museum. Kris unveils the valor and vulnerability of the Marine Corps through the kaleidoscope of combat art, sharing tales from his dual role as both creator and curator. The Marine Corps Combat Art Program stands as a testament to the power of art in capturing the intricate tapestry of military life, and Kris's insights are a tribute to the courage and commitment that each piece represents.

It's an honor to champion these artists whose work goes beyond the gallery, fostering a deeper appreciation for both the art they create and the service they immortalize.

Art as Revelation: The Artist as a Spiritual Archetype with Netanel Miles-Yépez

Art as Revelation: The Artist as a Spiritual Archetype with Netanel Miles-Yépez

Though a professor of religion at Naropa University, and the author of numerous books on spirituality (and a frequent dialogue partner for our guests), Netanel Miles-Yépez is also a well-known artist, philosopher, and spiritual teacher. On this episode, we have asked Netanel to discuss his life at the crossroads of art and spirituality, the archetype of the artist, the internal origins and ‘midwifing’ of a vision, art as spiritual nourishment, artistic ‘jealousy,’ the essential spirituality of art, the relationship between art and prophesy, the muse and 'revelatory contents,' the difference between talent and training in art and spirituality, art and a 24/7 spirituality, projections on the spiritual artist, the holy mystery of human experience, depth and quality in the artist and artisan, Hasidism and the investment of intentionality,  the contemplative attitude, and art that lives.

You can view and/or purchase some of Netanel's artwork at his Etsy shop, and learn more about his work in general on his personal site.

Ep 2: Hippies, Murder + Painting with Fire! Beeliner Diner, Alexandia, Va.

Ep 2: Hippies, Murder + Painting with Fire! Beeliner Diner, Alexandia, Va.

Host John Murphy talks with diner co-owner, Noelie, about being raised in a hippie commune in Seattle and finding acceptance at a small cafe called--you guessed it, the Beeliner. Noelie shares the joy of her diner being a place for comfort after a local tragedy brought people together to share in their grief, creating an atmosphere of healing.

A man named, Albert, tells his story of growing up in the south as America wrestled with civil rights unrest, going to prison, becoming a pastor, working beside infamous Watergate felon, Charles Colson, in prison ministry and convincing a member of his own church to turn himself in for a murder he committed twenty years earlier.

The Beeliner is truly unique in that gallery-quality art is installed on the walls. Murphy talks with Markos, the artist who created the paintings about his journey into the DinerVerse and creating works of art using fire and smoke.

Outback artists take Brisbane by storm

Outback artists take Brisbane by storm

One of six in a family of girls born on a cattle property in Richmond, western Queensland, Lindy Hardy was given two options, go to painting class or join the family at the picnic races. The races won, but nowadays art is the winner. Lindy is one of six outback artists who brought their works to a pop-up exhibition in Brisbane, organised by red Ridge Interiors. As you enter the show, what hits you is a "riot" of colour and a sense of space. Yet, it's the isolation and the colour that inspire many artists. Lindy says painting stimulates her mind and stops the shake from Parkinson's disease. Painting gives her freedom! Lindy says art is alive and well in the bush, and she can't wait for the next artists retreat in Blackall. https://www.redridgeinteriorqueensland.com/outbackartpop-upexhibition

Firstly Dami discusses her new painting hobby and at what point can one qualify themselves as an artist (1:20). We also discuss what we owe our parents and if we have any financial responsibility towards them. We also discuss what (if anything) they owe us(32:00). After that, Seyi talks about weird energy she's gotten from people in Lagos and how she has to be careful who she hangs out with (46:00). Finally we talk about weird sexual situations girls could find themselves in and how they have to be more assertive (1:10:00)

Coming Out of her Shell with Olga Poreda

Coming Out of her Shell with Olga Poreda

Olga Poreda is originally from Poland, where she completed her Masters Degree in art and graphic design. Work and destiny brought her to Kelowna in 2013 which was a very interesting transition and an opening of a new creative chapter in her life.

The extraordinary beauty of the Okanagan inspired her to follow her calling as a artist.
Here, she found many likeminded people. The big adventure began with renting out an art studio at the former heArt school space on Bernard where, while working on slightly crazy looking paintings, she started meeting wonderful artists, musicians, poets...

The last few years for Olga  have been all about coming “out of the shell” and getting back to singing, which she had abandoned many years ago.

Thanks to the support and encouragement from beautiful people involved with Kelowna Art’s Council, and their great creative initiatives like Songwriters “Stewdio”, or Our CoffeeHouse which connects artists with engaged, listening audience, she finally began to thrive and fully embrace her own artistic path.

Now she sings at “Beardy and the Beast”; jams, chants, loops, writes songs, creates electronic music, dances and keeps exploring her voice, experimenting with intuitive approach to singing, improvisation and her professional work. She perceives singing voice as a tool for grounding in the present moment, stress relief, meditation, and wishes to encourage people to try it out and see all of its benefits for themselves. She’s also enjoying intuitive dance which inspires her to dive deeper into the subject of mind-body connection. Being a part of this wonderful dance tribe has been an amazing gift... and makes her feel right at home.

She also keeps herself busy as a freelance graphic designer and occasionally videographer.

You can follow her work @ mindcrafted on Facebook.

    See Olga's online portfolio here.

    Marketplace The Podcast- Hobbit Houses

His weakness is his uniqueness.   Rudi from Colorado has been homeless, survived a civil war in Central America and disabled.

None of that has stopped him from reaching his goals…sharing his unique art and working towards a mindfulness that is a bright spot in dark times.

He used his creativity and imagination to escape the brutality of growing up in a civil war and grew that imagination to create something positive and unique for children and families to use and enjoy. Custom made Hobbit Houses.

How did Rudi start making Hobbit Houses and how did he manage to survive?  If you’re in a bad mood this should change that… It’s Marketplace…The podcast.
