When The Child Becomes The Parent

When The Child Becomes The Parent

So often many of us have felt and been told we are mature for our age way before we hit adulthood. Being responsible for more than ourselves didn't randomly happen.

With the help of Monica Galvilanes, LMSW, a liberation-centered therapist and educator, we define, unpack and explore parentification while providing ways to overcome its effects.

We are sure many of us can relate to this topic let us know your thoughts.

"The ultimate measure of a man is how safe you feel in his presence." - Matthew Robertson

Ashley Hutt of Peace by Pieces has the pleasure of hosting our first interview with Matthew Robertson - Certified Life Coach.  We dive into the concept of Healthy Masculinity.

This conversation is robust, yet just skimming the surface of this broad and deep topic with many facets and nuance.

We do focus on 5 main points:
    1. Matthew's story as a man who has worked through and recovered from harm caused by men.
    2. What can healthy masculinity look like?
    3. Inner work that women can do in preparation for dating & relationships.
    4. When in a relationship, how can a woman effectively nudge their male partner to "step up".
    5. Advice for single moms raising boys and/or moms raising boys with unhealthy masculine figures.

    When you parent your parent.

    When you parent your parent.

This week we talk about parentification of children - when you take care of your parent(s). It might be somewhat healthy and normal to do it here and there for brief moments, like if they have an accident and need physical care or you learn how to do some grocery shopping or pay some bills, but when you become their main emotional support, and it becomes an entrenched pattern in the family, adverse outcomes abound. We talk about the different kinds of parentification, the effects on you as a child and adult, and the way it affects your relationships and your mental health. As always, we try to illustrate the concept by relating it to ourselves as individuals and as a couple.
