#46 Pete Abordi - Touring with Parkway Drive, Growing Up as a Bra Boy & the Cronulla Riots

Today i had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting with Pete Abordi.

Pete grew up in Maroubra, NSW. Growing up surfing and running about he joined the Bra Boys. A well-known group of guys who had a passion for surfing and looking after one another, mostly coming from low socio-economic situations.
Pete found success in the hardcore metal scene, with his band 'NO APOLOGIES'
Whilst playing in Byron Bay one day, he met a young band who went by the name 'Parkway Drive' and befriended them, eventually touring with them and watching their historic rise to become possibly the biggest metalcore band the world's ever seen.

We also go in depth on the Cronulla Riots that took place in NSW in 2005 and what role the Bra Boys had in the major altercation.

Episode #94 feat. Chris Mackertich of DREGG

Episode #94 feat. Chris Mackertich of DREGG
When a band grabs your attention the second they take to the stage and you're stuck in metal awe for the duration of their set, you HAVE to follow them up and see what they're all about afterwards hey! Well, that's the story behind how we discovered DREGG last year at Big Sound. The band who cross genres more then we cross borders these days have been fats making a name for themselves in Australia with their wacky on-stage antics, costumes and hardcore sound which, caught the attention of Epitaph Records who signed the lads not too long ago.

This week frontman Chris Mackertich joins the podcast to chat all about their signing amidst a world struck down by COVID-19 and what this means for them moving forward. He also discusses the band's plan to not follow suit of what other acts are doing, to stand out from the pack and be themselves + his ideas for creatives (and anyone else stuck in self-isolation) to pass the time and make the most of this situation.

Podcast host Browny also takes a look at the coronavirus parody band Vermicide Violence who teamed up with YouTube star Jarrod Alonge to release their pandemic deathcore anthem which went viral amongst the heavy music community!

There's plenty of new tunes from In Hearts Wake, Make Them Suffer, Trivium, Lamb of God, Virtues, Fit For A King and heaps more so jump in and cure your boredom!

    'Good Things 2019 Preview'

    'Good Things 2019 Preview'
Good Things Festival 2019 is fast approaching and if you can't tell, we're so bloody keen for the East Coast run to arrive, so much so, we've tracked down a few of the bands featuring on the lineup for a chat including Enter Shikari, Ice Nine Kills and Trivium.

Join podcast host Browny as he FINALLY gets closure from Rou Reynolds (Enter Shikari) about their latest album The Spark which was arguably their most heartfelt release to date and find out why it's taken them over two years to get down to Australia to play songs off it for us. Talking about touring delays, Spencer Charnas (Ice Nine Kills) also discusses why his band took their time to make it to Australia and how he came up with the ideas behind their incredible new album The Silver Scream which features songs written about horror/thriller movies from your childhood. He also talks about what the late Wes Craven meant to him and if the band would consider doing a sequel album with more movies they missed out on. Then Matt Heafy (Trivium) jumps in to talk Dad chat, how their latest album The Sin and The Sentence has been universally praised and how he still fanboys over metal heroes, just like we do with him.

We also take a look at the festival's sideshows, how YOUR BAND could potentially play at the event and thrash songs from bands on the lineup including Simple Plan, Gravemind, Thy Art Is Murder, Poppy, The Damned Things, The Veronicas, Windwaker and more...

Episode #56 feat. Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage

Episode #56 feat. Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage

They say some people can look intimidating and that's how Killswitch Engage frontman Jesse Leach was once perceived,  but once you get to know the guy (or at least have a chat with him) you realise just how human and similar to the rest of us he really is, so you can imagine how stoked we were to have the metal frontman co-hosting on this week's episode of Wall of Sound: Up Against The Wall ahead of their appearance down under next week supporting Parkway Drive + their own headline shows.

A man with a few stories behind his belt (and his own podcast show to share them too) he was more than happy to open up  about his recent throat surgery which, if he didn't act on sooner, could have ended his career fronting the infamous metalcore outfit which he took over the reigns of following the departure of former vocalist Howard Jones, a man Jesse sparked up a long overdue friendship with not too long ago which cleared the air between the band members and consequently resulted in a wild collaboration no fan saw coming. Yes, he goes into detail about that too.

Podcast host Browny also pays respect to All That Remains founding guitarist Oli Herbert who has passed away at age 44, merely weeks away from the release of the band's ninth studio album Victim of the New Disease.

There's also New Music from Soilwork, Amaranthe, Soulfly, Affinity Minus Perfection and Psycroptic, throwbacks from Rob Zombie, Arch Enemy, Deprivation and heaps more...

Episode #42 feat. Jason Aalon Butler of The Fever 333

Episode #42 feat. Jason Aalon Butler of The Fever 333

With the current state of the world we need hardcore punk musicians fighting for what's right through their music more than ever and the latest band to emerge from the ashes of the fallen is The Fever 333 fronted by Jason Aalon Butler (ex-letlive.) who is this week's special guest co-host on Wall of Sound: Up Against The Wall.

Everything this man touches, turns to gold, so you can imagine the hype behind their new EP Man An America which was produced by John Feldmann and features the iconic Travis Barker as a guest drummer, alongside Aric Improta and guitarist Stephen Harrison. But as it turns out, being Butler's project, he wasn't afraid to tell the industry professional how it should sound as he explains the band's conception and purpose to podcast host Browny.

He also explains how The Fever 333 is a band, for the people, especially people of colour who still to this day are being racially profiled, treated like shit and are losing their lives all because of the colour of their skin. If the #BlackLivesMatter movement needed a band to champion their efforts, this is the outfit to do it. So get to know them and find out more about Jason's new side project Pressure Cracks, a Southern Californian hardcore band guaranteed to bring you our of mosh retirement.

There's also new music from Sensaii, Serene, Jonathan Davis and Parkway Drive, throwbacks from Architects, Killswitch Engage, Rage Against The Machine and Every Time I Die + everything you need to know about AWS who devastatingly should have won Eurovision this year...

Episode #39 feat. Dan Marsala of Story Of The Year

Episode #39 feat. Dan Marsala of Story Of The Year

When you've been in the industry as long as Story of the Year have been making music you tend to pick up on a few things, most importantly, you can't just rely on selling your music to make a living. Evidence of this was made when bassist Adam 'The Skull' Russell departed the band back in 2014 because it was nearly impossible to play in the band (touring and recording) as well as raising a family at the same time. SOTY frontman Dan Marsala goes into detail about the struggles the band have faced over the years as he co-hosts this week's episode of Wall of Sound: Up Against The Wall ahead of their return to Australia next week in support of their new album Wolves.

The new album only made possible with the help of fans pledging money so the band could enter the studio and make the album they've wanted to for years, an idea Dan (and many fans) were sceptical about at first, but in the end, it ended up being one of the best things they've done that not only benefitted the members, but the keen and eager fans who wanted nothing more than to hear new music from the band for the first time in 7 years.

He also talks to podcast host Browny about the possibility of bringing his punk/comedy side project The Fuck Off And Dies to Australia and if his days of backflipping on stage are coming to an end anytime soon.

There's also plenty of New Music to get through from Parkway Drive, Drown This City, WAAX, Eat Your Heart Out, Dream State, State Champs, Cancer Bats and Scars on Broadway + throwbacks from Bring Me The Horizon, Stick To Your Guns, Introvert, Beartooth and heaps more

Episode #34 feat. Ben McCracken of From Parts Unknown

Episode #34 feat. Ben McCracken of From Parts Unknown

As far as punk/rockabilly infused acts go, From Parts Unknown may be relatively unknown to the majority of the world, but it's only a matter of time before the masses jump on board and witness the calibre these lads have between them. Hailing from Dallas, Texas the boys recently released their Trucker Speed EP, which at only three songs long, serves as a filler between the band's first album Bruiser and their forthcoming release, which is still in the works. Frontman/Guitarist Ben McCracken joins Browny as this week's podcast co-host to introduce his band to Australian audiences (and the rest of the world) and express his profound love for our very own exports, The Living End.

McCracken also delves into Dallas' live music scene and explains how it managed to come back from the ruins where bands and touring promoters would skip their city in favour of more supportive states, an issue we're currently plagued with in Australia. Can we learn a thing or two ourselves from the way they got out of it? Ben thinks so and offers up advice for those stuck in those cities lacking tours.

There's also throwbacks on the playlist from Grinspoon, Garbage, Spiderbait and The Living End + New Music galore from Parkway Drive, Shinedown, Dear Seattle, PAGAN and Sevendust.

Episode #31 feat. Geoff Rickly of Thursday

Episode #31 feat. Geoff Rickly of Thursday

At one stage in your life, you've no doubt had an emo phase, which came in many different ways and varieties, whether it be the emotional connection you had to the song about your ex leaving you or the one about your Dad taking off without saying goodbye or the one about loving someone so much it makes you cry... the list goes on but the one things these songs and bands had in common was they were inspired or conceived following the rise to fame of bands like Thursday, who were the pioneers of writing songs about emotions with whiney vocals, scathing screams and heavy riffs. That's why we're stoked (but not too stoked) to reveal this week's co-host on Wall of Sound: Up Against The Wall is one of the giants who started it all, Geoff Rickly.

Join your podcast host Browny as he delves into the band's past and finds out if Geoff ever listened to that band who claimed he was their inspiration or if he thinks listening to emo bands/musicians is some sort of band/genre masturbation. He also addresses how getting screwed over by the music industry helped him to become a better person, and business owner with Collect Records when he teamed up with old mate "Pharma Bro" Martin Shkreli and how certain clauses always looked out for the best interests of the bands on the roster, surrounding all the drama Shkreli accumulated over the years.

Plus there's plenty of emo anthems that'll make you wanna pull the guyliner out of retirement including My Chemical Romance, The Used, Say Anything, The Beautiful Monument, Hawthorne Heights, Breaking Benjamin and The Rasmus to name a few + New Music from Parkway Drive and High Tension.
