Heidi's Story - Pediatric Cancer + Child Loss + Ohana Oasis

20 years ago Heidi lost her 5 year old daughter Alison, to a brain tumor.  She walks us through what life was like before Alison's diagnosis, and what happened throughout her life after Alison passed away.  Heidi is definitely making lemonade with her lemons.  She chose to keep moving forward and to honor Alison through living her own life and fulfilling what matters most to her.

Heidi has made some big changes in her career and location.  She worked in public affairs advising on health care policy in a variety of positions including the Idaho Director of Government Affairs for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network.  8 years after losing her daughter and realizing she had some good tools & resources to share with others she founded 'Ohana Oasis' in hopes to help others work through their grief & loss through retreats.

Talking with Heidi was so uplifting.  We are so happy that she shared her story and wisdom on our podcast.  We hope that you guys love this episode as much as we did.

    174. Keynote at Fetch KC (August 26!)

    174. Keynote at Fetch KC (August 26!)

I love lecturing... but this keynote will be very special to me.

On August 26, I get to cross something off of my speaker bucket list: keynote presentation. I was supposed to do this keynote last year and had to drop out after our son was diagnosed with leukemia.

So I feel so fortunate to get to finally fulfill this dream in two months. Fetch has a special place in my heart. Kansas City has a special place in my heart as a Mizzou grad and an Air Force brat who was stationed an hour away for years. This topic will also have a special place in my heart as I discuss how this medical journey with our son has changed my perspective on caregiver burden and empathy toward clients.

Check out this week's episode of The Derm Vet podcast to learn more about the keynote topic. I have a special code BOURGEOIS25 off your registration if you want to join me in KC!

235: Pediatric Oncology, Palliative Care, and the Role of the Peds SLP

235: Pediatric Oncology, Palliative Care, and the Role of the Peds SLP
Guest: Kristin Szymanek, MA, CCC-SLP - In this episode, Michelle and Erin are joined by Kristin Szymanek, MA, CCC-SLP, Director of Rehabilitation Services at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. The terms “Pediatric Cancer,” “Palliative Care,” and “Hospice” can easily send shivers down your spine. These terms can stir emotions that are intrinsically difficult to grasp. However, as pediatric speech-language pathologists, we may have the joy of working with little ones and their caregivers while they navigate their journey with pediatric cancer or pediatric feeding and/or swallowing disorders, clinical swallow evaluation or instrumental examination, suspected language delay, or even be called upon to evaluate and treat a suspected phonological impairment. Kristin will guide you on the SLP’s role and responsibilities as part of an oncology team, including unique barriers when working in this setting and with this population and how to infuse grace and evidence-based practice into palliative care.

59-Jen & Ella Edwards - Defying the Odds, a 9 year old's Journey to Overcome Ewing Sarcoma

Imagine taking your child to urgent care thinking they have appendicitis and instead being told they have cancer, and not just cancer, but Ewing sarcoma.  Ewing sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that occurs in the bones and in the soft tissues around the bones.

This is exactly what happened to Jen and Ella Edwards when Ella was only 9 years old!

Today, Jen and Ella join me to talk about Ella's cancer journey, what they learned about pediatric cancer treatments, the choices parents can and cannot make, and some of the practical tools they put in place to help Ella heal.  She is now 15 years old and shares advice for other pediatric cancer patients.

This is an inspiring episode that will surely touch your heart!

    My Interview With Melissa Fleming

    My Interview With Melissa Fleming

There is no word to describe the loss of a child. I believe it’s too painful to describe.

In 2016, Melissa Fleming and her family were given the worst news imaginable. Their son, Brock, was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). Not quite 7 at the time, Brock couldn’t understand why he was the only kid in school with brain cancer. Yet, Brock wasn’t deterred. He wanted to “kick cancer in the nuts!”

Click on the link to watch how this brave family dealt with the loss of a child, and how they are continuing Brock’s desire to kick it in the nuts!

1-Dr. Dagmara Beine - Navigating Pediatric Cancer

1-Dr. Dagmara Beine - Navigating Pediatric Cancer

Dr. Dagmara Beine is not only an amazing practitioner, but she truly understands what a family goes through as her daughter Zuza was diagnosed with cancer AND given a very poor prognosis at 3 ½ years old.

Having worked in emergency medicine for 12 years, Dagmara understood the value of western medicine and how it could save her daughter's life. However, as her daughter moved through her treatment and recovery, she was shocked at how western medicine failed to care for Zuza as a whole person. She knew as a mother and clinician that she needed to incorporate other tools to guide Zuza through treatment and help her thrive as a cancer survivor. She is going to share with us today the tools she found and uses today in her practice.

Updates on the release of Dagmara's pediatric cancer book can be found on social media (Instagram and Facebook):  Zuza's Way Integrative Care
