In this episode I spoke with Dr. Annie Hughes, a physical therapist and strength coach specializing in pelvic floor health and pre/postnatal rehab. We discussed the importance of pelvic floor health for both men and women, debunked common misconceptions about strength training during pregnancy, and explored the benefits of strength training for overall health and postpartum recovery. Dr. Hughes emphasizes the need for better education and resources for women regarding pelvic floor health and provides insights into her approach to rehab and coaching for pre and postnatal women.

Taking an Unexpected Career Path with Pelvic Health Physiotherapist Gráinne Donnelly

Taking an Unexpected Career Path with Pelvic Health Physiotherapist Gráinne Donnelly

On today’s episode, I’m talking to physiotherapist Gráinne Donnelly about taking an unexpected career path.

Gráinne is a physiotherapist in Northern Ireland helping to change the perception of pelvic floor rehab. Initially, Gráinne planned on becoming the world’s best sports physio. But that was before she was reluctantly assigned a rotation at a maternity hospital and ended up finding her true calling in being able to serve women and their pelvic health musculoskeletal problems that were often neglected and overlooked. This unexpected career path has come full circle as Gráinne has created the first return-to-running guidelines for postpartum women and does research on keeping women active in sports. Gráinne has taken her career outside of the clinic and educates both women and health care professionals through her own podcast and online courses and speaking internationally.

    We talk about:

    • How Gráinne ended up in a career field she didn’t even know existed when she started physiotherapy school.
    • The challenges of specializing early as a young woman and being taken seriously.
    • Gráinne’s evolution from public service to private practice to starting her own podcast and creating her own courses and speaking internationally.

Our guest today is Dr. Michelle Gilpin, DPT. Michelle is a Doctor of Physical Therapy who practices out of Evolution Healthcare & Fitness in Portland, Oregon. In Today’s conversation we focus on one particular area of body, the pelvic floor. What is it? What is its function in the wholistic system of the body? Action Plan

I just want you to stop and think about whether you have any of the early signs and symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction. These could be new symptoms, or long standing symptoms that you’ve always been lead to believe were just “normal”. They could be related to lifting weights, running, or just being honest about how frequent and urgent your trips to the bathroom are. You can even take the pee test Michelle mentioned, to see if you can stop the flow mid-stream. If you identify any of these signs or symptoms - BE PROACTIVE. Our healthcare system may be set up to treat problems only AFTER they get serious, but you can break out of that model by being your own strongest advocate and finding healthcare professionals, like Michelle, who are committed to helping you go from feeling good to feeling GREAT.

That’s it for this week. Until next time, I wish you STRENGTH and GOOD HEALTH.

EP 32 A Weight Neutral Approach to Pregnancy and Postpartum with Jessie Mundell

Pregnancy and the postpartum period are full of changes - physically, mentally and emotionally and moms struggle to accept themselves and their body during this time.  That can lead to restrictive food behaviour, or engaging in exercise that is too intense or demanding and can potentially delay healing or cause damage.  This only adds to the shame, pressure and confusion that is already often felt at this time.

    ---

Our guest on the show today is an expert in non-diet pre and post natal fitness and she’s all about helping pregnant and postpartum people to feel their best inside, and then moving joyfully to support feeling good physically, emotionally and mentally.

    ---

    About our Guest:

Jessie Mundell is a Kinesiologist, Fitness Educator, and Fitness Coach specializing in prenatal and postnatal exercise training.   Jessie is the creator of the Postnatal Fitness Specialist Academy, Core + Floor Restore, To Pregnancy & Beyond, and co-host of the To Birth and Beyond podcast. She's focused on effective exercise during pregnancy and postpartum, rehab of the core and pelvic floor, and C-section recovery.  Jessie teaches people how to exercise safely and strongly in pregnancy, and how to regain their core, confidence, and fitness as moms and parents.   Jessie has worked with hundreds of women during and after their pregnancies and is extremely passionate about giving them the care they need. She also runs a Certification program for hundreds of trainers and health professionals who want to learn methods for training postpartum clients. She aims to steer the conversation away from the 'pre and post-baby body' madness and into a place where women feel supported, encouraged, strong, and confident

    ---

    What you’ll learn by listening:

    1.  How the pressures postpartum people face to “get their body back” affects their physical, emotional and mental health.
    2. How moms can feel better in their bodies without focusing on fat loss.
    3. How you can make the most of your limited self care time - what types of movement to focus on and how to safely progress
    4. How we as fitness professionals can best support pregnant and post partum people by focusing on the whole person rather than their body composition.
