    Performance Engineering on Hard Mode with Andrew Hunter

    Andrew Hunter makes code really, really fast. Before joining Jane Street, he worked for seven years at Google on multithreaded architecture, and was a tech lead for tcmalloc, Google’s world-class scalable malloc implementation. In this episode, Andrew and Ron discuss how, paradoxically, it can be easier to optimize systems at hyperscale because of the impact that even miniscule changes can have. Finding performance wins in trading systems—which operate at a smaller scale, but which have bursty, low-latency workloads—is often trickier. Andrew explains how he approaches the problem, including his favorite profiling techniques and tools for visualizing traces; the unique challenges of optimizing OCaml versus C++; and when you should and shouldn’t care about nanoseconds. They also touch on the joys of musical theater, and how to pass an interview when you’re sleep-deprived.

    Mike Scott is a lawyer, former police chief, researcher and professor, and training facilitator.  

    Michael S. Scott is the director of the Center for Problem-Oriented Policing and a clinical professor in the School of Criminology & Criminal Justice at Arizona State University. He chairs the judging committee for the Herman Goldstein Award for Excellence in Problem-Oriented Policing.  He leads the Center for Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) at ASU. 

    Scott was formerly a clinical professor at the University of Wisconsin Law School.  He served as the first chief of police in Lauderhill, Florida; special assistant to the chief of St. Louis, Missouri Metropolitan Police Department; director of administration of the Fort Pierce, Florida, Police Department; legal assistant to the police commissioner of the New York City Police Department; and a police officer in the Madison, Wisconsin, Police Department. 

    He was a senior researcher at the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) in Washington, D.C. In 1996, he received PERF's Gary P. Hayes Award for innovation and leadership in policing. 

    Scott holds a law degree from Harvard Law School and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

    Sara Banta is a Health Coach and busy mother of three who are now 12, 15, and 16 years old. She completed her undergraduate studies at Stanford University with a degree in Economics and Psychology in 1998. In 2016, she graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and The Invincible Wellness System.

    It was in Kenya that David and Margie Slinger started on the journey of education and awareness about energy balancing and EMF protection. While digging the foundations of their house 100 kilometers from Mombasa, they found human skeletons! They were living on a burial ground for slaves.

    They started searching around for an answer and it was then that they discovered the work of Wilhelm Reich, a 1940's scientist who discovered a way to move life energy. They started making devices and burying them, not only on their plot, but in the caves where the slaves had been held before being shipped to the slave markets in Zanzibar. Changes were apparent not only to the energy of the place but also to people's health.

    The irony was that although they lived in a traditional village with no electricity or running water, there was a cell phone tower! The Africans who could hardly afford square meals struggled to own cell phones, which they proudly carried as a status symbol while they were unaware that they were destroying their health.

    The local hospital boomed with new patients…and so their research and education on life energy and EMF continued.

    Eventually they returned to New Zealand and life kept presenting opportunities. Today they run the website and business Life Energy Solutions and create beautiful jewelry and home protection devices that greatly help with the negative effects of radio frequency and EMF. They make no claims other than they have proof that the devices work. Their aim is to empower as many people as possible with protection and information.
